There Morning previous a notice appeared in thecan be M ol,ier verdict lor him at their Enquirer, calling upon the Democracy to as- j handa than one of moral turpitude or moral
semDie at Apollo tlall in force, and verv significantly intimating that the Douglasites were going to have a "love least" all to themselves in the evening, and that no dis cussion of political subjects or reply tu Bright and Willard would be permitted, on so sacred an occasion. Our citizens generally, outside of the Douglas conclave of he Democratic party, were desirous of hearing the Nebraska bill and other issues of the campaign discussed, and accordingly a note was addressed to Gov. Willard by J. G. Jones, Esq., on behalf of the citizens of Evansville, requesting that r.n anti-Nebraska speaker be allowed to answer the first speech of the evening, whether made by himself or Senator Bright, for the space of one hour and twenty minutes. To this note no reply was made, but it was verbally made known that no such proposition would be accepted. After the meeting had convened, the same j proposition was publicly made to the President of the meeting, Judge Lockhart, who staled in reply that "it was a Democratic meeting and the proposition would not be acceded to." At this juncture, the Whig and anti-Nebraska portion of the audience quietly withdrew, followed by a large portion of the audience, and as they were relirng, the Hon. Senator (!), with clenched fist, extending his arm after the crowd, and in an excited and menacing manner, exclaimd "RUN, YOU INFERNAL COWARDS!!!" The leading Whigs and anti-Nebraska men who withdrew, generally remained way, and counciled their frisnds to offer no interruption whatever to the speaking. Senator Bright commenced a harangue, which would forcibly remind one of all the -4th of July orations that they had ever heard, in which the great rRo-ouii t, figured a very conspicuous part. The history of his own Senatorial efforts were given a degree of importance, which in all probability no olher man than Jesse I). Bright had ever possessed the sagacity and penetration to discover. He had served his country in the Senate with Cass, C!ay, Webster and others, and modestly acknowledged that "he was the tyoangest man in point of yemrs!" that served on the immortal committee of thirteen that saved the country in 1850. The main drift of the Senator's long speech was a reiteration of the hackneyed assertions and statements which everybody had heard a thousand and one times before. We will not attempt a report oi it, beeaute we know it would he as uninteresting to our readers abroad, as the speech itself waa to those who listened to it. He concluded with a tremendous harangue to the audience, as citizens of Indiana, to atand by the Nebraska swtsDr.E, forgetting, however, to tell tnem that the sister States f Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Iowa and Mistouri had overwhelmingly repudiated the measAire which he so earnestly "enjoined" upon Indiana to endorse. As 5fr. Bright retired from the stare. Lt. Gov. Willard arose, when a general yell went up from the crowd for Major Robinson, and a scene ofcoufuslou followed which baflles ! description. The Gov. stood upon the stage ' Jike a statue. He would occasionally m tempt to speak, but his voice was immediately drowned by the continued cry fur Robinson! "Nobody but Robinson!!" The symptoms of a general row and break-up were strongly manifested for some 20 min-uti-s. Several prominent U'higs went forward to the stage and endeavored to suppress the opposition, but did not succeed until Maj. Robinson himself mounted the atand. The Major briefly explained the circumstances under wi ich the Meeting was called, claiming cj maintaining the right of the people to ae heard, but declined crowding himself in to make a speech, where he had been crowded out; he conjured his fellowcitizens to listen quietly to the speeches or retire, and concluded ay promising one oi his best speeches on Saturday nigat next. Gov. Willard was then allowed to proceed with little further interruption. His speech gave us a moat striking illgstratiou how sound, and rant, and vehemerce, and affected earnestneaa of manner will give effect to perverted statement of facts and to the grossest sophisms and fallacies, before a crowd. The demasugue was the conspicuous characteristic in hia harangue. The old stale exhordium that he was contend f.r tht nrpi-i-ift nrinrinlaa ...... i .... .1 - .. The reader of the present day will recollect Contreras and Churubusco, which madi? memorable the months of August 1847. In September of the same year followed the victories of Molino del Rry and Chupultepec, and on the 14th Gen. Scott planted his victorious standards in the capital of Mexico. This event the cotrinander-iii-chief announced by a General order, in whi. h he called upon his brethren in arms to return, both in public and private worship, thanks and gratitude to God for the signal triumphs w hich they had achieved for their country, beginning with the 19th of August and ending with the 14th of September. These victories were, however, dearly bought. Three thousand men were lost from he time Gen. Scott left Puebla, until his entrance in the city of Mexico. The Mexican loss was in much greater proportion. XUe Dlaltir banco . t tiie Meeting, Tuenday Nitfbi.
