DAILY JOURNAL. Dancing with a Boot Black. A correspondent of the New York Times, writing from Saratoga, is responsable for ti e follow ing:
There has ben aristoc acy here of all grailea and shades, from the jjenuine "simun pure," down to the "mushroom" 'nd codfish; and I Icuked in one evening and saw the j valet de chamltre of a gentleman at one hotel,! waltzing with one of the haughtiest beauties, ' who wm denominated "belie" at the other. He may have been quiet as wood as his mas- j ter; but I doubt whether the young lady would have smiled so graciously on him, or permitted his moustache to come so near her cheek, if she had known that he had spent part of the evening brushing coaU: and blacking bootsTakes Li. The Columbus Statesman tells bow a cute fellow found his way into that city the other day how he duped a lot of Abolitionists by a cunningly devised yarn, and obtained from them, in amounts varying from one to ten dollars, a sufficient sum to enable him to carry Canoda shore several runaway slaves, which he pretended to have secreted at a place not far distant. The se quel of the story reads thus: The man is now in a distant State, the owner of a fine horse and bujrgy; and as to the slaves, tl.ey ha 1 concluded not to leave their masters. 07" Th? water in the Red Sea appears to be thirty two feet higher than the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico is twenty two feet higher than the Pacific. The Amizon falls but a foot in fifty miles; the Rhine one foot in a quarter of a mile: the . Loire a foot in one and half miles. Plawet. Third Comgrkssional District. The -opponents of the Nebraska swindle throughout the State, will be gratified to learn that the race for Congress in the third District will now be between George G. Dunn and C. L. Dunham, the present member, Col. Hendricks having declined being a candidate. On Monday evening Mr. Dunn addressed a an immense concourse of I he citizens of Madson, in opposition to the Nebraska and whisky planks of the 21th of May. We need not say that the speech was able and interesting; Mr. Dunn mukes no other ort. At the conclusion of Mr. Dunn's address, Col. Hendricks came forv ard, and in a very appropriate speech, declined remaining u candidate, and pledged himself to aid in the defeat of Mr. Dunham, who had betrayed nis constituents. No one now doubts the election of Mr. Dunn, by a very large majority State Journal.
