CITY OF EVANSVILLE TUESDAY MORNING, ::::::::::SEPT. IP. Tlie illttlne Election! The news from Maine tells of the entire - ,. r .:at nverlhrntv nf thp Alactune wetnocraut; ica i .na, , . . . uiaandiiij, 1 lie all ill i n . w u w , horse, foot and dragoons. It has received a most unmerciful rebuke. Morrell has been elected by the people, requiring a majority Tote over all his opponents. Wood, antiNebraska, has been elected to Congress in the First District. In 1852, this district gave McDonald, Democrat, 3,802 plurality. In the second district, Perry, anti-Nebraska, is elected over Kimball, Democrat. In the 3d, Benson, ami-Nebraska, elected over Dickerson, Dem In the 4lh, Knowlton, anti-Nebraska, undoubtedly elected In the 5th, Washburn, anti-Nebraska, elected. In the 6th, Mi Hi ken, anti-N'ebrask.t, elected. All the Senators elected are anti-adminis-Iration! Of Representatives, 6 Democrats are elected, and 43 anti-administration men. The Portland Argus (Democrat) of the 12th, says: The latest news ler.di us to fear that about everything from Congress down has gone by the board, and we shall be glad to team that Morrill ia not elected by the people for Governor. The "State of Maine" speaks of the route of the administration aa overwhelming. Iowa, Vermont, Maine! So they go. We will give them return news of the same sort from Indiana next month. Appeal to I' Ii t ii k i ii Demoerali. The Enquirer asks Democrats,"Can you,in your present position, control your own votes in any manner you see fit?" Certainly ihey can, and what is there to prevent them! Does the Enquirer think those office-holders and office-seekers, who so falsely call theuvelvea '.'old line Democrats," will be able to control their votes! We hope every Democrat, and every citizen without respect to party, will control his own vote, by voting for what he thinks is riyht and proper and patriotic in an American citizen to vote, and will so vote as to rebuke those leaders, who are bo willing to sacrifice Northern rights and interests to secure Southern votes, and who have determined to make the support of the odious Nebraska measure, a test ol Democratic ort .lodojcy, and with iron hand sought to crush down tree opinion among the masses of the Democracy. They have told honest Democrats, that they will not be recognized a- Democrats unless they support this abominable bill. Finding this and similar threats were unavailing, and that lare bodies of Democrats are determined to vote against Nebraskaism and the extension of slavery, they have now commenced conxmy them not to do so. Even the Enquirer has ceased its threats, and now appeals "to tl inking men." It had better appeal to the unthinking men to those wh permit their leaders to do all the thinking for them, and blindly follow their dictates, no matter how impudent and abominable the dictation may be. As to the llainkins men. thev will he able to think for themselves without the aid ' - of a paper which appears ttnabfo to think for itself to any good purpose. And what ist! tho Enquirer want these thinkirg men to think about! Why simply about the old principles of the party, and their du') as Democrats, in supporting their party on the strength of these. Yet these "old liners" have interlopated a new principle in thenarty, which is the sole question mingling with the approaching election and old principles they will find have nothing to do with this election They have attempted to make these thinking men swallow the Nebraska bill under threats of immolation. This they csnnot do. The thinking men have already done their thinking and made up their minds. The Enquirer and other machine Democratic papers, are only trying to make them stop thinking, by their appeals. Centre To v nali p. We call the attention of those interested, . .. . a- r . ma-n -1 ' i to the proceedings of a meeting recently! held in Centre township, which exhibit an independence worthy of imitation. We hope the citizens of that township will carry out their resolutions. We advocata the principle, of every citizen doing his own thinking and his own voting, without dictation from any sturce. We are satisfied that all our side needs for success at the approaching election, is for citizens to think or themselves. The other side, or the Nebraskaites, want citizens to throw aside allsober thought, and vote just according to the dictation of party leaders. Journal of Commerce. We have received the first copy of a new daily paper just ,issued at San Francisco, called Journal of Commerce. It i of good site, neatly printed, and Whig in politics. At its head, as one of his publishers, we find the name of frieud Chas. T. Cutler, lately of Evansville. We hope Charley will be enabled with the aid of .others, and the patronage of a discriminating public, to successfully carry out this newspaper experiment. His numerous friends Jiere will certainly wish him success.
