The prospects for the election of the whole anti-Nebraska ticket in Indian, are not only encouraging, but they render the fact almost certain. The feeling among the people is uch, that all party distinctions are wiped away to make room for this one question. It ia true that those who hold the offices, and those other leaders of the same certain fac - l.nn u!,J,. r, In.omrp tliPSPofßcPi when - Ihey drop from the hands of their present possessors, are using every endeavor to rally ; i i J . 1 . 1 .... w 1 1 ... ... 1 ..... ('. .. the old party which give them the offices but they are fighting against public opinion. The people of Indiana are no longer to be gulled by these office holders and office seekers. They are no longer to have opinions crammed down their throata, without thinking for themselves whether it be proper or not to swallow such s'uff. In other words, the people are wide awake and fully determined to have their own way for once, without dictation from any source. The prospects for the election of the whole ticket opposed to the Michine Democrat ticket, or opposed to the Nebraska Democrat ticket, are flattering indeed. As the Lafayette Courier, an old Democratic paper Bays from present indications every one of the people's candidates will be triumphantly elected, also the People's State ticket, and an overwhelming majority of the People's candidates for the Legislature. There is the best of reason for so thinking. Take the vote for Governor at the last Gubernatorial election, at which Jo. Wright received over 20,000 of a majority, and it only requires a change of seven votes in each township in the State, to secure the election of the People's candidates. !oes anybody euppose there is a township in lhe State that seven Democrats cannot be found who will vote with the people, iu opposition to slavery extension and free whiskey? From every part of the State the cheering news reaches us that hundreds of Democrats are throwing off ibe party yoke, and entering into the contest with a zeal that knows no abatement. Indiana mmt and will be redeemed. The people have determined to send no more doughfaces to represent them in Congress and be bought by Soutliern eluvocrat, or frightened into the support of measures directly the opposite to all their former professions, lest the Union be dissolved. The shame that has crimsoned the cheek of every Indianian, in view of the fact that our State was the most servile of any of the free States, on the vote for the Kansas Nebraska infamy, will be wiped out on the 10th of Octooer. The people have everything to encourage them in this contest. Iowa has led off and set a glorious example. Every Northern free State will follow suite, and, our word for it, Indiana will not be behind the foremost of '.hem. The party leaders begin to realize the hopelessness of their cause, and have summoned to their aid the slave holding Dougla, anJ other foreign influence. But it is all in vain. The Augean stables muit and will be swept, and nothing short of a miracle can prevent it. The First District of Indiana is regarded by the Nebraskaites as their strongest hope in Indiana. This is the most Southern district, and has fewer abolitionists in it by tenfold, than any other district in the Slate. Abolitionism is not recognized down here as a party, or as being strong enough to warrant the coalition of any other party for success. Knowing how the word abolitionist is detested down here, and calling til tali Nebraska freemen abolitionists, they have felt confident by raising that cry, of securing at least the First District. But they will be mistaken. The people are not to be frightened by that cry. Tney are determined that the First District of Indiana will not send again to Congress the man who has once shown himself a traitor to the opinionsand interests of his constituents, and a man who j 1 l: ir : 1. 1 r has proven himself incapable of properly representing his constituency. They are determined to supercede him by a n an who is able and faithful, and who under no cir-1 cumstances can be manufactured into a doughface. fCLr" The Sheriffality is one of the exci ting questions at this time. It has assumed a form, phase or shape, which throws it out of politics altogether. The two candidates are not running as party men at all. The Journal has nothing to do with their race. It stands entirely neutral, as it has done 011 the SherifTality question the last two elections. We will freely publish anvthinir coming from either Mr. Gavitt or Mr. Terry at their personal request, and not unless Ihey do personally request the favor. fTDrs. G. B. Walker, VVm. M. Iioulan Kebuked Agalnt The St. Louis Intelligencer of last S iturday says: "The first defeat of Douglas in Illinois, was inere usaioi wie peopie oi wni-' .I a. , cago to hear him in defence of his conduct at Washington. His second defeat is the refusal of the Democracy of the Eighth Congressional Dis'rict (Col. Bissell's, opposite t-j us,) to nominate a friend of Douglas and the Nebraska Bill, to be the successor of Col. Bissell." It will be recollected that the Intelligen cer is a Southern paper. The Convention it alluded to, after a terrible muss, adjourned without making any nomination. Douglasiie8 had planned it and were determined to nomi iite a Douglas Nebraska man, bu the anti-Nebraska Democrats utterly refused to make such a nomination. The editor of the rfalein Adv ocate, Donglas) who was present and participated in the Convention, says of this "lame anal impotent conc't sion:" We have no time for cunmciit; perhaps it is eApedie.it we lUrtjld ,ay no,Phinjf al present, until we can speak dispassionate ly and without the influence of feelings excited by disorganization and unparalleled conduct Our thunder shall be reserved for a more temperate atmosphere. Good! We hope the Advocate will deal out unparalleled thundtr on the rascally Democrats who refused to endorse Douglas and his swindle. It is evidently determined to tear its political shirt. Curreioiidrnce. Our young friend C. K. D., Jr., reports to us in a letter which we publish to-day, the decision in a cape very important to steamboatmen. We are glad Capt. Montgomery is acquitted, and we thank Cy, for his attention in acquainting us with the fact. A letter will also be found in today's paper from an 1 ndianapolis correspondent. We shall be glad to hear from him agai.i. Indianapolis is the centre of the Indiiana world, and it becomes us to have a good cor respondent there. We have published a good many letters litely, and hope our friends will continue their favors. Correspondents have merely togive their proper names, and their letters will be published, provided it be not necessary to re-write them. OCT" An exceedingly flit, insipid and absurd article in the Enquirer yesterday, about Mr. McMasters, and written for that piper by a gentleman who is in the wrong field for his genius when he pretends to write for a newspaper, says Mr. McMasters is not a 1) ocrat. So when Mr. McMasters asserts most solemnly he is a Democrat and always has been one, his word is to pass for nothing but we must take the word of this simple" ton that he is a Whig! We care nothing about Mr. McM 's politics, but think he ouht to be permitted to know his own sentiments. He has had the ple.oüre of demol-1 ishing two Machine Democrats lately.on the Nebraska question, and is therefore all rinl on the hintre Question of the aoDroachincr 0 r r BB I election. We would advise the writer alluded to above, in all his church relat'ons, to stick to Ike flute. He understands. OCT The Knquirer has not vet heard from I(1,va, RfM1,Iv. we ,,, hskve tn pprnirw, mip neighbor that as publisher of a ncir. paper he 1 rr should atea all the news to his readers, without picking out from telegrams such as please himself. Is he aware yet, that Democratic Iowa has elected anti-Nebraska meiJ to every prominent effice that they have elected the Governor, one of the Congressmen, and probably both, and obtained a majority in the Legislature, which will sen 1 to Congress an anti-Nebraska Senator in place of Augustus Ca?sar Dodge! And is he aware that in Vermont, the Nebraska Governor, John L. Robinson, has been turned out to make room for an anti-Nebraska man, and a Whig at that? Really, we fear our neighbor is getting behind the age. He can't certainly call that thing he edits, or which he gets young men of opposite opinions on the Nebraska question to edit for him, a newspaper, when he don't pretend to give news no more than he pretends to write his own editorials, CO" The Court of Common Pleas is still In session. ' , noon was occupied chiefly by Bright and . Lane who8e Jt, of course was, merely to - - a - i . i . i . I..,!... 1 I ..mnl hi.. l..-lr , .... u aiamre. His speech occupied about two hours, and was, of course, devoted to a defence of the late action of Congress, and by inference, of his own course in that body. You would not thank me for an outline of it, even if I felt prepared to give it. Not an idea or argument in it struck any one as original or new. Much strength was spent to justify his own course, and the gist of most of his speech was, the Whigs, in the palmy j days of their m-ij jrity in Congrets, had done as oau as me present generaiiou or legislators, and would do so again it they should have a chance! One object of the speaker evidently was to strengthen the wavering in thtir party attachments, and to furnish plain people, who talk much and read little, with a supply of arguments easy to be understood, if not vary conclusive, in support of the present Darfv measures. In this he mav have I.. - . i A u a at -j rL- i needed, but the idea of Ins havmg changed j the view8 of any intelligent opposer of the Nebraska Bill, would be mere fudge. His late experience at Chi 'ago had perhaps taught him not to insult the good sense of his hearers by asserting that not one in a thousand of them understood the Nebraska Bill, or had read it. At any rate he was listened to here patiently and respectfully, the public sentiment, ever among the strongest political opponents, being wholly averse lo any infraction of the freedom ofspeech. But although the gathering was larger by several hundred than any former pulitirah meeting of the season at this place, enthmintm was decidedly at a discount, and no I a r as relates lo mere oratory, I am safe in 6at- j ing that all who never heard Senator Douglas before, Whigs and Democrats, were disappointed in him. Pettit, (when he forgets himself, and drops his vulgarity) is immeas urable his superior. Douglas was succeeded on the stand by Lt. Gov. Wlllard, (our Governor is absent 0.i a honey-moon tour) about whose speech 1 have no particular note to make. Breckinridge failed to arrive, and so the chivalry had to go unrepresented. The performances were closed by Senator Pugh of Ohio, in a speech that had at any rate the merit of brevity. The young Senator's aim was lo show why the Whigs should co-operate with the Old Lines, rather than with the Fusionists. Mr. Pugh evidently has that in him that will make him a man of mark in the Senate. He is an easy and highly pleasing speaker, nnd condl,cl?d argument on this occasion j with much P""""bi lityr.
