every ma.i in the district could have heard that speech. It was unnnsweralle in its ar gumcnu, and pirtionsof it beautiful in patriotic eloquence. That it gave saitsfacion to the great crowd assembled, we need not ay. At its conclusion, the wonder ceased that this speaker had so effectually defeated John L. Robinson and Col. May in publie discossion. During Mr. McMaster's remarks he declared himself a Democrat, but that like hunndreds of other Democrats in this district, he had refused to endtrse the administration on this question yet was none the Jess a Democrat on that accutint. He spoke with proper severity of the course of the rawrcpre eentative of this district in Congress. He did not wonder that the powers at Washinc ton were so desirous o'having Mr. Miller returned to Congre-. He had thow n hinelf SO servile a tool of the powers that be, eo ready to anticipate their wHies, so desirous, right or wrong, of being always at the feet of the udminblratioo, ard withal was so warmly attached to the interests of the South, which tbe aduainistrationVo delightec to subserve, that it was no wonder they desired him back again. He was opposed In -Mr. Miller for his votes in Congress, which were entire a misrepresentation of the feelings of his constituents. He voted for the Nebraska bill, but on that question the speaker said he had dwelt long enough. He had voted forgiving ten millions for territory not worth half a million. He had voted for MrOlds bill to increase very largely the present rates of postage, yet which bill did not interfere at all with the present franking privilege, by which members of Congreos were permitted to load down mails with election-

in that vicinity, and Commenced boring for coal. He also obtained the right from the city of Evaneville to run a tunnel with railroad track uadW any streets of lhe city, at the depth of LrJÜ feet bei w the surlare, promising to thus deliver coal in the heart ol the city, at the same price it was sold at the principal shaft. All his preliminary arrangements made, Mr. K. prosecuted his work lively, and last week had the pleasure of penetrating a large vein or stratum of coal, the real extent of which he has not informed u, more I ban to assure us it is entirely satisfactory to binelf. He will commence sinking a shall near the late Dr. McDowell's residence in a few days. Ity probably the first of Dert-m ber, he will reach the coal. In two or three years he contemplates digging oinl delivering coal rig-ht iu the heart of the city at the rate of 20 OUJ baaholal a day if desired! Wc have regarded us an era in the btstorjp of tlvausville, the day when Mr. Kt-i strman't; experiment iu search of coal should, prove successful. With all the elements close al ham!, we only required good coal at our door-", to give us greater advantage than any other city on the river for becoming as celebrated for manufacturing as lor commercial advantages. Eureka! It is found! Coal abounds .".round us that we knew l efore but coal in vast beds is lying under our feet awaiting but the touch of the hand of mutt to be ready for all his purpose. We needed but the surity of this to mark a new era in our history. Mr. K. has given us this surity, and in a few months we shall begin to realize that his discovery may be worth more to us than both our railroads. We shall have more to say on this subject.
