DAILY JOURNAL Blank Deeds, of the mos approved for m and on fln paper Blank Note, Bill Lading, dec, saledtc, for st this office. The mail hat evening brought stale pipers. We received full files of Louisville papers of lest Ssturdej! The dispatches contained in them we had previously published. We thank Mr. Bishop, who keeps fruit store next door to the Pavilion, for the largest water mellon we have received thia season. We don't knovr how much it weighed, but can aay very truthfully it weighed heavily on our feelings. The rausk mellon in company was excellent. We can recommend those having mellon partialities to a Mr. Bishop's stock. Mr. Bacon received at his grocery -yesterday some of the finest mellons of the city. He supplies families with the article, and sends mellons and other groceries home in hia wagon, free of charge. We thank him for his attention in aending a mellon to us. It is well to be remembered by frieoda these hot days. Old Foster Hall is being converted into a Masonic Hall, and will be ready for occupancy in a few weeks. The roof has been raided and the Hall itself is being thoroughly transformed. When completed, it will be one of the largeat and finest Maaonic Halls in the State. The Telegraph lines are now in good working order. They are a little more reliable at thia time than the slow mails. Our mails from the East reach here by land and by water, and at every other time except earlier but that stated in the programme. The latest Louisville papers on hand yesterday, till the cart arrired in the evening, were last Saturday's. Biach & Kollenberg have an extensive tannery nearly completed and ready for operation in Lamasco City. We cannot conceive a more desirable point for that branch of business than this. They have all the facilities at hand, and the enterprize under the management ol men of their experience cannot but prove successful. The Crescent City Bsnk building will soon be completed. The Bsnk fixture will

be moved there in a few days. This building with the new one adjoining, will prove quite an ornament to that part of the city. The third story of both buildings will be used as a Public Hill, and handsomely and comfortably seated with arm chairs. The Canal Packet Pennsylvani leaves the Main Street Bridge for Terrea Haute this evening at t o'clock, v fjr We understand that on Saturdny evening last it was determined among the members of the Home favorable to the acquisition of Cuba, that a resolution calling on the President for the correspondence of the Executive branch of the Government with the authorities of Spain on the subject, shall be brought forward (in the House) lo-day. We take it for granted that this move is to be made in the hope that in reply the President will urge the acquisition f the island on Congress, suggesting at the same time that authority be given him to lake from the Treasury during the approaching recess some ten millions or so, with which to make the cash payment for the island, in case Spain's affairs may shortly induce her to become willing to sell to the United States. f Washington Star, flj A gentleman who can endure to have hia corns mashed without grumbling, is undoubtedly possessed of a heavenly disposition. We (Phil i . Mercury,) saw one of these true Christiana at a political mass meeting in Independence Square, a short time ago. He said, in the most pleaaant tone imaginable, to a burly fellow who waa standing on hia toe "My dear air, are you not a miller1" "No air; why do you ask that!" "Why, sir, the tact is, I thought you were a miller, and a very honest one loo, becauae you hsve been grinding my corn this half hour without taking toll." Pbog ia a Milk Cam. A gentleman in -this town a few days since uncorked a can of vilk which had been left at his house, when out jumped a fine plump frog. His frogship, however, seemed to be much startled at finding himself clothed in white, and after a ingle glsnce around him, turned about and plunged to the bottom of the can. It ia a matter of serious regret that milkmen should be so rareleae when they scoop up their water. I .VaicAeiicr (N.H.) Reporter. Learred Elephabt. "That's wery knowing han mal of yours," said a cockney gentleman to tha keeper of an elephant. "Very," waa tho cool rejoinder. "He performs strange tricks and hantics, does he?" inquired the cockney, eyeing the animal through his glass. "Surprising," retorted the keeper, we're learnt him to put money in that box you see away up there. Try him with a dollar." The cockney handed the elephant a dollar, and aura enough he took it in his trunk, and placed it in a box high up out of reach. "Well, that ia wery hextraordinary hastons' Inn' truly? Now let's see him take it out, and hand it back." "We never learnt him. thst," retorted the keeper with a roguish leer, and then turned away to stir up tho monkeya snd punch the hyensa.
