The City Equalization Board have been all the week in session, and have not yet closed their lubors. They are having a tedious job for this warm weather. The Directors of the E. & C. Railroad were in session here yeaterday. The earth is becoming very dry and 'farmers are complaining of suffering cropsA Sheriff Outwitted The Hippodrome exhibited on Satuaday in a pleasant country village not over twenty miles from Miluaukie. The Sheriff of the coui.ty had been notified that a lot of pickpockets sharp fellows at the business followed the Hippodrome, fleecing the unwary. In order to watch them the better, our Sheriff diaguiaed himself and mingled with the crowd, as a green 'un from the rural districts. He passed the day and evening in close observa'ion of all euspicioua looking sharaeters, but made no discoveries until about 8 o'clock, when he found to his mingled serprise and amusement, (hut his own poc'iet had been pickt'd clean wallet, notes, checks, bills, &c, all gone. liockily he reached town in time to atop the payment ot t1! checks, and the JosMl otherwise was small. He would give something to make the acquaintance of the clever rogae Who so effectually turned the tables on Wim. Mil. Sentinel. Riot ih Sf abckester, N. H. On Tuesday morning (4th ol Jul ) a riot occurred between the Irish and Native Americans : The row was commenced by the Irish. They were then attacked by a Urge number of the exasperated populace. Many of the Irish habilaliop.s were assailed, and a smart warfare carried on with brickbats and stones, demolishing great quantities of glass, &c The windows of a large building owned by Mnrahall, who killed the Irishman a few weeks since, wer broken in by the Irish, particularly that part occupied as a shop by Marshall's brother. The Catholic Church, upon which was expended $12,000 last season, was assailed, and the fence about it and the basement windows were partially demolished, and the beau'ifully stained-giass windows completely riddled with stones. Tuesday nights demonstration was again made to destroy the church, but was quieted by the police. Several individuals were injured in the melee by brickbats, one or two seriously, but none dangerously, so far as we knowConcord Statesman. A Bridegroom's Speech. "The health of tht bridegroom and bridef My friends: Of myself, at this most mystic hour, I will say nothing. No; but I thank you fur my wife. Wife! blissful monosyllable! a blended harmony of all earth's music. Wifel that calls up, as with the enchanter's wand, the homestead and the hearth the kettle singing, rejoicingly sinsing, on the bar, and the cat s'eeping, profoundly sleeping, on ihe rug a word that intensifies so many meanings the call of butcher and baker and milk below, and a quarter's rent and water rate, and the Queen's taxes. Ladies and gentleman, when I only glance at the wedding ring on my wife's finger that ring and that finger "which have been the summit of my bliss this morning to bring together; when I look upon that simple bit of golden wire, it eems tt me that, in ihe words of the bard of Avon, "I have put a girdlo round about the world" a world of beauty and troth, ol constancy and love. When I lo k at that ring and how can I help looking at it? does not its brightness fascinate and chain me J OCT The Columbus (.O.) Statesman tells an anecdote of a couple ol hunters in that region, that will bear retelling: A hunting party composed of two gentlemen of this city, lrft their homes early on Friday morning last, for the wilds of R.igue's Harbor. After enienng the woods and be-1 comiug separated, each heard the report c t the other's gun. One had fired at what he! conceived to be a deer in the bushes, and the other had aimed at what he supposed toi 4c a squirrel on the ground. Meeting soon afterwards, each betrayed an equal degree of alarm. "J m," aatd one, "I'm going home. I've killed some feller's dog." "I'll go with you, Crist,' said the other, Tva killed ad d hog." 0OOf Disunion Ames once said: "I the celebrated Fisher wish it was part of the "catechism to teach youth that it cannot be. ABMIVALOF THE NIAGARA. AT HALIFAX. Halifax, July 18. The general news is unimportant. "the Franklin went ashore off MaMuck, Long Island, yesterday morning", and is said to be in a dangerous position. She had 160 passengers on buard, about 40 of whom reached this city early this morning. Her cargo consists of 800 tons of merchandise. At last accounts from her ahe was not leaking badly. The Franklin's advicee are to the 5th. A formidable revolt took place at Madrid on the 28th ult, headed by Gen. O'Donnell. The insurgents numbered 4000. Reports of tne aftair are, however conflicting. 1 ne latest state that the city is covered with barricades, and that the garr son had fraternized with tne insurgents, and that O Uonneli had threatened to attack the palace unless the Minister resigned. It is also slated that the Queen has been called upon to abdicate. Il is reported from Vienna that the Czar's reply had been received, and he says he will resist to the last man and the last ruble. The Russians had not yet evacuated Moldavia, und had concentrated her forces on the Transylvania frontier, making a complete ekirno ufili IViint ete ith 30.000 mell reudv ready e . for UCtlOn. No important movements of the allied fleets were reported Sebastopol was still threatened. The Baltic fleet was still off Cronstadt. The Russians continued to retreat from Wallacl.ia, and the right bank of the Danube was entirely evacuated, except 2 lort tied positions. Washihgtof, July 18. Schate Mr. Sumner presented a memorial from the Philadelphia society, for the promotion of the abolition Of slavery, in favor of the repeal of the fugitive slave law. The memo ial referred to the ca6e of a tree man of Philadelphia, who escaped from slavery in Georgia under the guards of a steamboat, was re-arrested at Wilmington, Del., and returned to bondage. Mr. Sumner briefly gave a narrative of the affiir and made some comments. Mr. Clay said that the dog would return to his vomit again, but as for himself he was tired of liiteuing to the hacknied phases of abolitionism, which were continually repeated in violation of the order of the Senate. Mr. Sumner warmly repelled, saying he was in the h ibit of answering argument on the floor of the Senate when presented by his peer, but when a Serator does not keep within the rules of propriety and order in debate, that man is not my peer. Mr. Dawson undertook to reprove Mr. Lumner for renewing the agitation, and dissented that the man recovered at Washington was really a slave. Mr. Benjamii asked Mr. Sumner whether he recognized any obligation under the con stitutiun to deliver up lugitive slaves. Mr. Sumner asked the gentleman if in Louisiana, or South Carolina, laws existed refusing a colored man of Massachusetts his freedom, and selling him into slavery for his jail fees. Mr. Benjamin admitted such laws to be unconstitutional. Mr. Sumner asked him if he was willing to introduce a bill in Congress carrying out the provision of the constitution, granting citizens of one State the right of citizenship in all States. He said the Senator from Louisiana muat explain his position on them points before he could confront this discussion. Mr. Benjamin declined any further discus sion on the subject. New York, July 18. Cooper, the President of the Sunbury railroad, denies that the work will be suspended on the road, and says there can be no reasonable doubt of the subscriptions made by Crane, Dillon & Co., being paid not being dependent on Mr. Crane alone, but on a number of gentlemen of moderate wealth.
