During the recess of Congres?, Capt. Reid t0 three thousand dollars. The council at
was requested to form a design of our flag so as to represent the increase of States, with out des'roying its distinctive character. Capt. Reid submitted his design to the committee t the next session, recommending the stripes be reduced to the original number of thirteen States, and to form the number of stars representing the whole number of 8tates into one great star in the Union, ading one stsr for every new State, thus giving the significant meaning to the flog, symbolicallyexpressed, of "E Pluribus Unum." The first flig was made at small cost and presented to Comgress by Capt. Reid, to whom Mr. Clay, who was then Speaker of the House, responded in one of his best patriotic strains of admiration, both for the deig.i of the fljg and thegnliant Captain. Our flag has now become time-honored, and like our free Constitution, there is little iu it to improve by change.
first fixed the prices at fifteen hundred dollars, bur hearing that it would be paid they concluded to double the sum.

Served mm Kiajbt. A fellow down town, took it into his head yesterday not togo to his regular employment, a short distance out of town, where his dutiful wife had been in the habit of carrying hi. dinner to him daily, and encouraging him
with her sweet smiles, as well as warm potatoes, ar.d went off and got drunk before 9 o'clock, and returned home. His wife was somewhat accustomed to see John a "little tight" of an evening, but was greatly outraged at beholding him in that condition so early in the morning. She at once took the "Maine Law" in her own hands and resolved upon confiscating what liquor there was in her demi-John, by breaking in hs head. She exhausted the supply of broomsticks quickly, nor did she stop the good work then; she
reached down to her tiny little foot and took off a No. 8, which sie used with unrelenting fierceness, until John surrendered and promised to go to work. We s'iali watch this intereating couple hereafter, anxiously, and see how the lady', plan works. It is at any rate a caution against setting tight too early!
Stock Speculatiows The New York Journal uf Commerce says that stock speculators have been taught a lesson by the transactions uf the last few weeks. An enormous over-issue of stocks shows that, under the present system, there is not the requisite security against fraud. And the defalcation of operators shows, also, that when by shrewdness or good luck a .peculator ha. obtained a nominal profit, it may elude his grasp at the last moment. There wa. a time when speculation, (to call these stock
operations by their least offensive title) were
not considered within the range of legitimate business; now, there are few who have not .bared in the general scramble after gains of this sort. Unless the line between a regular business or calling and auch reckless pursuits becomes more marked, credit will aoon be of little value.
The Clere's Wir A merchant, clerk, of the Rue Hautevilie, Paris, recently married. His master had a niece, of Spanish birth, an orphan. She is not pretty, though very sensible and well-informed. At the balls last winter, little or no attention was pid to her; indeed she seemed to attend them rather as a whim than from inclination or amuse
ment, as she seldom or ever danced. But if she did not dance, she noticed much and listened to more. The clerk soon observed that the lady was only invited to dance when no ether partner could be obtained. She herself had already noticed the same fact. Being a gallant man, he acted accordingly. The incidents that led to the denouement may be easily divined. In six weeks after his first dance with the fair Spaniard, he obtained her permission to ask her uncle for her hand in marriage. He, astoniahed, gave his clerk's proposal a very cool reception, and then had a lon interview with his niece. Finally, however, all was arranged, and the
lovers were married on a Tuesday. The Thursday after, at breakfast, Adeline said to her husband, who exhibited considerable chagrin at being compelled to return to the duties of his office thus early in tbe honey-
"Very well don't go there go there no more!" My love, it is very easy to say so, but" "Easy to say so, and easy to do both. I have a million and a half. Nobody knows it but my uncle. I always made it a point of forgetting it myself, because I wished to choose a really disinterested husband. There need be no more offic work for you, if you do not wish it. Yet still, my advice is, husband, that you neglect nothing."
