True, they subscribed more than this, but it was in lands at three or four times their real value, and could not be accepted by the company. In fact, their own director aaid to the company that the stock subscribed in Daviess was not worth 820,000, although nearly four times that amount was upon the books. Such are the claims that the people of Daviess actually have upon the company in question, and upon the accommodations which a convenient location might afford them. We would say to "Paducah," that neither Mr. Carpenter nor any other member of the company, have any objections to his writing and publishing whatever he pleases. The destinies of the Straight Line do not depend upon so precarious a basis a. the meagre "conditional" subscriptions of the county of Daviess, nor does the company feel at all inclined to impair the character of tha road, to the extent necessary to please the parsimonious cravings of "Paducah" and his friends. (j7"The New Orleans Bulletin, an excellent Whig paper, says that, if Wm, H. Seward wereelectedPresident, the South would certainly dissolve forthwith. We have no idea that theSouth would do 6uch a deed for such a cause. If Mr. Seward were President, and if he should, as President, pursue an outrageous course toward the South and be sustained in it by the North, the South might feel it necessary to d.ssolve the Union, but she would hardly be silly enough to dissolve itBimpiy on account of the election of this, that, or the other man to the Presidency. Many a man might make a better President than his previous acts and declarations would lead the people to expect, and many a man might make a worse one. The editor of the Bulletin does Mr. Seward injustice. Mr. S. is bad enough, but not so bad as the Bulletin paints him. That paper says he is "in favor of the immediate, unconditional abolition of slavery in all the Southern States." If he is, be has never said so. There is not on record a declaration of bis, public or private, that gives the si ghtest countenance to such a charge. Speedy Retribution. Early on the morn ing of Saturdy last, a man named Sebasi ian I Murasky, was caught in the act of perpetratinga burglary at the premises of George , i'ontileton, Esq., on the Lebanon road, about ' three miles from Cincinnati. He was brouaht - 1 to the city and taken before Esq. Rowekamp, i who held him to appear before the Grand Jury now in session, he was there indicted,! I and in less than an hour was arraigned before ! the Criminal Court, where he was tried, con-' victcdand sentenced to five years imprison-' ment in the penitentiary. The same afternoon he was tuken to Columbus under the custody of one of the deputy Sheriffs. Here we have an instance of a crime, its de tection, the arrest of the perpetrator, u pre liminary trial, an investigation before the , Grand Jury, a final trial, conviction and sentence all in the space of less than twelve hours. Fatal Riot is Philadelphia. Michael Roe, a keeper of a large beer saloon, near the New Schuylkill water works, was killed Wednesday afternoon, during a riot, in which his house wa. badly shattered. The dinicul-I ty occurred in another saloon in the neighborhood, and while a police officer was endeavoring to quell the riot, he was severely attacked. He fired and retreated to Roe, house. The mob pursued him and attacked the house, killed Roe, and beat the officer badly. Thomas Nairn, one of the rioters, was shot in the head. He and two others are in custody. E. Fun wy Case of a Steamboat Sinking. The New York Journal o! Commerce, of the 1st inst., gives the following rich narration of the sinking of a 6teamer: Night beftre last the steamer Buffalo was to start from the foot of RoMnson street, wilh a deck load of freight, ar.d about 400 German emigrants, bound for Albany; some carpenters being at work at the tin e belo.v the (oret ahile deck, the port, of which were left open to admit light. In the confusion attendant upon the embarcation of .o many passengers, when the order to start was given, the emigrants not understanding the meaning of the phraae "stand back, you infernal sweii heidi!" made a simultaneous rush to thejside of the boat nearest the wharf, causing her so to careen that the water rushed in at the open ports, and sank her in her berth. A scene of indiscribable confusion then ensued. One man who had a trunk containing money, wished to throw it overboard, as he supposed that would be the best means of saving it. ' and in his eagerness threw his wife instead, j who, as her cap struck the water, snt lorth a truly substantial yell in the original tongue. She was fished out and carried to shore, dripi .
