Early in the morning we had a small shower, with 1 food deal of wind. Anything for a change from the excessive heat. The telegraph wires were down yesterday between Terre Haute and Louisville, and thus stopped for a time the passage ol despatches between Evansville and Louistill. Dr. Muehlhausen was about the wharf yesterday morning, in pursuit of an apprentice boy whom he thought was about to leave him. He found him on one of the wbarfbuats, but the boy, having no idea to contend against superior force, took to hia fceela. He waa finally caught after having given his pursuers a warm chase of a half mile. The fine low pressure packet Southerner is the St. Louis packet for to-morrow morning. She will be down at an early hour unless caught on a bar. Several rooms have been engaged on her thia trip, by telegraph, by some of our cilizeus going to St. Louis, who want rooms on tbe best packet in the line, or quite aa good aa the best. They will have a pleasant trip, or else it will be their own fault. The Southerner is new and elegant, and her officers clever. The packet Fashion arrived here yesterday morning at 9 o'clock. She was detained by having in tow the hull and upper works of the O. W. Kendell. She was taking it to Shawneetown to be used as a wharf boat. The Faabion brought no papers as in 're were nuno issued at Louisville on the morning of the 5th. There was no packet yesterday from 9 . Louis. It was tbe Crystal Palace's day, but she has gone into the New, Orleans trade, and we presume no boat could be obtained to take her place. The J. P. Tweed arrived here yesterday afternoon from New Orleans, crowded boat and barge with emigrants. There had been a good deal of sickness, but we did not ascertain the number of deaths. When here she had ten sick oersons on board, and one dead man. Blrcn. Creek Hescrrsir. The Terre Haute Journal contains an article on the recent lawless cutting away of tbe Birch Creek Reservoir on the W. and . Canal, by which a thousand acres of water, ten feet deep, were loat or spread over tbe neighboring country. The importance of this Reaervoir to the Canal, in view of tbe dry season, cannot be appreciated. It is to be hoped the villiona who committed the deed, may be arrested. The Journal says: Ab business men who reccollect the want .a)f wa-ur ,!a3t summer and fell on the Eel Riv sr Suscinit level will appreciate this calamity . A full supply bad been stored up in this Reservoir for the ppcocbing dry aeaaon, but by one act of midoightdfaUainy, it is II gone. The breach will 00 dokib be immediately repaired, but at thia late period tiiere ia little prospect of rains to fjlUhe sReserjroir for use this eacon. It is supposed that a number of Uvlew ..T.fl must have joined together in perpeUating thia outrage. The ahmtest night of the year, (22d June,) does not afford aufficient hours of darkness for the perfoamance of ao noch hard labor by oe or two men. A few tnontha before the same bank waa cut, but was discovered before a breach was made. The Trustees have built thia Reservoir at a coat of $30,69) to supply the want of water South of thia place, and to give to tbe citizenaand business men certain nav'tration to Evans, i .e. They have paid damages lot täie owners of the lands taken for the pur-' poee, and etüd every claim but one, aud that one bjjso mesa pressing. Every thing that was reasonable hes been done to satisfy tboae who Jive near tbe Reservoir, and it is difficult to conceive wuai cavlA prompt thia act of wanton deatratctioo of a great and valuable public work. Talis Reaervoir ia absolutely necessmry to the very existence of Ahe Canal South to Evansville. and tbe Trustees have no choice but to isaitt tain end keep it up.
