Mr. . . r T 9 . . . C. has been blamed for that which, even it it ba a wrong to the Washington community, should attach no responsibility to hirn . Ihe Preaident of the road, Mr. Smith, assumes all the responsibility in the matter, after the report of the Chief Engineer, and regrets that tu is not made the subject of abuse instead of Mr. Carpenter. ' We had intended making a full report of Mr. Smith's speech, but its great length, the ' excessive heat of the room, the crowded j state of our columns, &c, furbid, although ; we are well aware we could fill up those columns with uo better nutter. Sowemust content our readers with a very brief abstract. After hid introductory remarks, he said he was going to take a different course in his speech from what he generally did. We maintain the. point of a centre, and are also on the Ohio river. Mr. iS.'b remark:! on tho prospects of Evansville in this connection, were very happy. Washington was no exception. Its claims had been rejected with those of Monravia, Bloomfield, Petersburg1, etc. This great liue of Railroad was a through road, aud not intended merely to benefit villages.
