DAILY JOURNAL.
Local and River Brevities, lO Blank Deeds, of the most approved form and oo Bne piper Blank Note), Bills Lading, dec, dec. for ante at tola office. o Paper lo.morroiv, The Printen all over the country rest from their usual labors U-day. Our faithful beads will not be an exception to the rule. No work will be done in the Journal office to-day, consequently the Daily Journal will not be is. ued to-morrow. "Now-a-Days! ! f That expression forms a regular advertisemf nt in to-day 's pa per. It was sent us by our agect in New York, and we know nothing more of its meaning than the mass of our readers. We presume, however, somt of them will understand it. VVe are informed by an officer of LamilCO, that Charley Anderson did not commence the fight in Lamasco, to which we alluded yesterday. A n Englishman was boaeting he could whip any man in America, when Charley pitched into him, and made Iiirh soon cry "enough." Charley afterwards had a fit. Smith was arrested and fined for commencing the muss. Thiaüaait was told us. . If to-day prove as hot as the several days previous, a number of death may be anticipated, as a consequence of heat and dissipation. VVe advise temperance on the part of all, but at the same time we know such advice ia useless. The little packet White River arrived from Green river early yesterday morning with a full load of tobacco and other produce. The new packet "Mansfield" was down on Sunday with the mail, in place of the Crystal Palace. The Mansfield is a new boat, neatly furnished and commanded by first rate efficers. She will run regularly in the St. Louis trade during the low water. The fast Prairie City passed down yesterday for St. Louie. She had a large freight, and is one of the best low water boats in the trade. The universal favorite stesmer Crys tal Palace has been withdrawn from the Louisville and St. Louis Mail Line, and will run hereafter in the New Orlems mail and pusecnger trade, commanded by Capt. VVm. J. Kouiiiz. The Palace ia one of the finest steamboat! on the Western waters, and presents rare inducements to the traveling public. Her fficers are all first class gentlemen, and understand their business. Their attentions to the press of this city haa been generoua and aa punctual as her trips. The Pal ace passed here yesterday morning. The Fashion arrived from St. Louis yesterday morning in good time. Sand bar Jon'l stup her. She will be down aain d.y after to-morrow for St. Louis. Th l fine picket J. G. Cline will be down this morning for St. Louis. S ie is an excellent boat, and travelers will find clever officers on board and good fare. Capt. Hite ia in command. '!! PswderLsplos en. Yesterduy we noticed the explosion of a small pow ier Btfailnts on a platiurrn car, caused by Ikt firing of a cannon. We take the follwinp particulars from the Louisville Courier: It appears that ths train from Aurora, whsn usaring the Seymour depot, was firing salutes trom a cannon, which was attached to thJ last platform car on the train. A small furnace, used for heating the rod with which the eannon was set ofTlay close by the breach ot the gun, and the wind, it is supposed, blew a spark ot this fire into t .e chest where about a keg or two ot powder had been emptied. An instantaneous explosion was the consequence, and five men who were on the car at the time, were bluwn into the air ntid horrible mangled. The victims of the unfortunate catastrophe were literally stripped naked, every particle of clothing having been orn from their bodiea by the force of the explosion, their limhs were fractured, their bodies were mangled, the hair of their heads was burned iff, and the groa-ue and criea of pufTerera filled the house where they lay. One man, Mr. Squibs had both his legs broken, and the flesh torn from hij hands, arms and body, the aoles of nd verw ahred mt uu rvery eiireu tu his boots were blown uff a clothing was torn from his person. Air. S. was thrown some aixty feet iroin the train. Mr. Walkins had his left arm broken in two places, and was badly burned in v iribus parts of his person. John Bsily haJ on of his legs broken In two places and wa otherwise aerioily injured. James L. Redding was badly burnt and severely contused on the chest and back. Henry Doolan had one aTro and one leg broken, and sustained aeveral severe injuries internal and external. During ths night of Thursday the three men most injured died in the utmost sgony.
