The Enquirer says it supposes the editor of this paper might be a "Know Nothing," because "he made a desperate defence of L them sau respecla Yo neighbor it certainly thing else than his bad grammar We were not before aware, that the article of ours denouncing the objects of the Know Nothing party, so far as we knew anything by com party, so mr is we unew anyiniiie oj cum- ... Report of .ho.. obj.eu, L .' s .... . thi. trticle, denying and proving that the, Know Nothings bad no connection with the j Whig party, wa. evidence that to lookod upon thera with great favor. Our neighbor cannot even bring in tht plea, so natural to himself, of ignorance, when he wrote the above paragraph relative to our article, unless he never read the article at all, which seems presumable from his remarks. And upon his ridiculous, and we may say wilfully false construction, of the spirit of that article, he taw fit to make the charge against us of being a "Know Nothing!" We have much better grounds for believing our neighbor a Know Nothing, and so has the whole community. Every number of his paper proves that if he ain't a literal "Know Nothing," he makes a vary narrow escape. At narrow an escape from banging would leave him black in the face from excessive choking. But we think thia precious neighbor, this most amiab'a of all neighbors, when he feels disposed to make a charge of this nature against a fellow-citizen, should have a Utile better evidence of the fact, than words from him directly condemnatory of the band of which he ia accused of being a member. We suppose, that if we should write an article directly condemnatory of a band of incendia ries or horse thieves supposed to be in our midst, this neighbor would at once charge us with being s member. But he tslka of our "endorsing" the New York National True Democrat! Our neighbor has a queer idea of endorsing. Because wa have charged that this paper is an "administration organ," which no one denies but himself, and proceed to make extract.! from it to prove its hostility to the foreign population and its sympathy with the Know Nothings, and draw the deduction that an administration organ occupying thia position, it very good evidence its masters occupy the tame wa are accused of endorsing this paper! We presume then, that if we should call the Enquirer an adminiatration orgsn and proceed to make extracts from its editorials to prove the poaition of the adminiatration on a certain subject, we would be liable to tha charge of endorsing the Enquirer! If tha editor thinks so, we shall be very careful not to make any extracts from his paper. The True National Democrat is an organ of the administration; it is the recipient of government patronage ss such an organ; and the sentiments we have taken from it, are those of the adminiatration, if we may judge its opinions at all by what its authorized press speaks. But we do hope that we shall not again be accused of"endorsing" it, or any other rabid and unprincipled Loco foco sheet. This is rather an unfair way to keep us from enlightening our readers, by extracts from their veracious and moral columns. 0 The Enquirer speaks of tha True National Democrat being "the organ of a disorganizing fartion of the city of New York." And pray who put this disorganizing faction into power! Who turned out of office good old line Democrats, men who had been Democrats and leading Democrats nearly all their lives, to make room for prominent members of this "disorganizing faction'" Why, the present administration! Contractors are required to be prepared for the peformance of the service on their respective routes by the 1st of November, 1854. The boats to be used are to be of the most substantial class. subject at all times to the approval or rejection of the General Mail Agent. The number of boats required will not be less than thirty, and all under proper restrictions as to the csrriage of freight and passengers. Could the efficiency of the present Postmaster General be relied upon to carry this object into operation, we might hope to be speedily relieved from the mnny vexatious delays which now attend the carriage of our river mails. Fetlae Reporte. We learn from a variety of sources that the most exaggerated reports are in circulation in the country relative to cholera in Evansville. We are happy to have it in our power to state, that all such reports have the very smallest foundation. There have been a few deaths here lately, just as there are every spring, and as we presume there always will be and a few of these deaths have been called cholera, and we think it very possible they were of the cholera, inasmuch as there is not a town or city of importance on the Ohio river, in which there have not been this season more or less deaths by this disease. Bat that there is any more aickneaa in Evansville than in other place of ita population on the river, we deny, or that there is any unusual sickness here at all, more than we might expect this season of the year. We would advise our friends in the country to put no faith in rumors of great sicknett in Evansville. Whenever there is any such sickness here as might render it dangerous for them to make their usual visits, we will promptly notify them of the fact through our columns. Skntescco. Weigert, who was found guilty of murder at Lexington, a few days since, waa on Saturday last sentenced to be hung on tht 12th of August. We hear that since hia conviction his hair has become entirely white. Before it waa quite black. We clip the following brief sketch of the circu.nstances of the murder for which Weigert was convicted, from the Cincinnati Enquirer:"In December last, Charles Cushiog was murdered in Lexington by William Weigert; the offeuco that provoked the fatal shot being a slight offence to the assailant's wife. On the loth inst., the prisoner, who had lain in prison from that time, was brought out for trial, and was convicted of murder in the first BJ degree! (7" Strange as it may seem, at the election last Saturday at Louisville, to determine by public vote whethcror not the city should erect water works, the question was negatived by a large majority. The enterprising people of Louisville seem determined to stick to their old creaking pumps, and wash in hard water the rest of their days, rather than run the risk of being considered anything else than old fogies, and very dirty old logies at that. Evansville will be supplied with wster works before Louisville, unless a private company establish them at the latter city. Col. Hust Sustaihed. We learn from the Louisiana papers that the course of Col. T. G. Hunt, in opposing the Nebraska bill, ia fully approved by his eonatitueuts. The New Orleans Crescent says: "We might indeed remark with safety that nine-tenths at least of Col.
