men t patronage than all the rest of the Democratic papera in the city. Our neighbor knowa full well the history of this paper. He knotva that it sprung into political existence and political favor under the auspices of the government, as the orgsn snd defender of the hordes of'Sorts,M vsgabond customhouse and other government office-holders in the city, appointed by Pierce and Guthrie. The Enquirer does not venture a word of denial that the True National Democrat, it the organ ef the administration and its appointees in New York. If it does, will it please tell us what Democratic paper in New York is the oracle of the government? Or will our neighbor make the humilisting confession that the President has no newspaper organ in New York at all? Mr. Hall attempta to parry oar blowa by introducing Horace Greely and the Tribune

aa "The great American oracle of Whi" gery." Now this subterfuge won't do, Mr. Hall. You know that the Tribune is not the oracle of Whiggery, nor has it been for years, in either State or National politics. It was a bitter opposer of President Fillmore's administration, and h lh" once declared the Whig party dissolved. There exists no parallel between the positions of the Tri bu no and the True National Democrat. The Tribune has long since been repudiated aa the oracle of the Whig party, and could by no possibility be considered the oracle of a party to which it denies existence. Whereas the True National Demo

crat waa conceived and established by the

highest official Democratic power and authority in the Ui.ion, and ia supported in the great American metropolis as the government's especial organ. Its sentiments are necessarily the aentimentaof the administration, ao long aa it endorses them. If the True National Democrat is a Know-Nothing, "Soft and wool-dyed nigger organ," what then must be tho character of iia god-father, the President, and its affectionate administration nuraea and supportera. If the stream possesses all the atale qualities which our neighbor attributea to it, the character of ita eource is at once demonstrated. Mr. Hall says he "understands there ia a

lodge of "Know-Nothings" already organized here, and doubta not th it the editor of the Journal belong." Thia libel upon us, the editor of the Enquirer knows to be a wilful and malicioua accusation, and we leave it where it emanated.

boiling over with a righteous indignation, snd literally bursting with admiration of the immaculate virtue of everybody who haa a vote in Pike county! We are perfectly well aware, at the same time, that he is so much a tool, as to be unable to act on thia or any matter without the consent and app.obation of the two or three persons who lead him by the noae, and against whose wishes or inclinations he would no more dare to venture, thsn he would to speak an honest political sentiment contrary to that held by hia masters. Now this gentleman was no longer sgo

than 1844, one of the noisiest Whigs in Pike,

county. He waa a member too of the Clay

Glee Club, and sung songs, and hurrahed, an i no doubt drank hard cider, and mask? a himself unusually conspicuous. Wsfkielieve he had a good Whig aongof hia own, which he took great delight in singing at different gatherings of the faithful. But he couldn't get office and there wss the rub. So, the Democrats having the majority in Pike, about 1846 he turned a Somerset in the best office seeking style, and wss ran for county auditor and elected by the aame Democratic r jters he had formerly taken such delight in abusing. He waa re-elected, and now seems to think that he has a life-tenure on the office, for he is working to secure his re-election again, slthough there are plenty of good

Democrata in the countv who would make

quite as respectsble auditors, and to whom no doubt the offico would be acceptable. Knowing that his popularity ia rapidly on the decrease with his own party, w ho are probably unwilling to keep him in office for life as a public pensioner, he hss with the consent of his owners leaped 'into the arena to fight the hattle of Pike county when nobody waa threatening it! If he had cared the valje of

a copper cent about errors in an ertiele of ours, or thought they might injure hia fellow ciizens if left uncorrected, he would, feeling tiimself Pike county embodied, have addressed us a letter pointing out the errors, and correcting them through the same channel

they were issued. But no! That was not his object. His objects were to make political capital for himaelf to have the eyes of the people of Pike turned in admiration on him to assist his ebbing popularity in again

of bravado and with the strongest wish for peace) apprehensive of interference with our private and domestic concerns by certain organized bands who are to be r recipil.- ted upon bW, we notify all auch, that our pu-pose is firm, to enj y all our rights, and to meet with the luat argument all whoahall iu any way infringe upon tliem. Resolved, That we recomrnrnd to our fellow-citizens of Missouri snd Arkansss, more especially of the border counties, to orgatiiz', with these ends in view; and to et:h and every man who feels an interest in the de-

tiny of the future State of Kanz is; to be on

the slcrt that we may avail ourselves of th great advantages which contiguity of the new territory at once gives to u, and entitles us, in moulding the covernment snd institutions of the future State in accordance with those of our own, and thus guarantee for the future a good neighbor and a firm friend, united to us by the bond of interest.

Railroad Celebration. We have received an invitation from the appropriate Committee, to attend a Publie Dinner to be given at New Albany next Fourth of July, in commemmoration of the connection between New Albany and Michigan City by a continuoua line of railway. A very general invitation haa been given, and a iar'e crowd is anticipated. We have no doubt the Celebration will be an honor to the great enterprise it is intended to commemorate and to the city in which it will be held. It would certainly afford us sincere pleasure to be able to attend. We hope Evansville will be well represented on the ocsasion.
