settlement and subjugation of the border territories. His first pioneer adventure by way of public improvement, was tho opening of a wagon road from Independence to Santa Fe, which has since its construction been of invaluable service to the country in the advancement of both' our military and civil interests. This project was long treated by the U. S. Senate w ith ridicule, yet it was none- the lesa

his favorite project, and his indefatigable pursuance of the object, up to its .final ac-corapli-bment, evinced a striking prescience in the foture destinies of the unexplored territories, which is now being proudly realized. His zealons exertions in th s project were of the most unselfish rharacter, and prompted merely by his adventurous spirit for scientific and historic acquirements. How far the researches of Col. Benton, and the early acquisition of his valuable store of topographs cal information, enters into the subsequent achievements of Col. Fremont, is a matter of interesting speculation. That both these gentlemen are entitled to immortal fame for their enterprising exertions and hazardous sacrifices, in developing the topography and resources of the vast western territories, every bo y is proud to coucede. The late expedition of Col. Fremont was one of extraordinary merit, both in the importance of its objects and the peril and suffering eudured by the parties enjaged. The ideas which we have been aMe to gather from California n.ne. .t.o conjectures of the knowing Washington ossipers, the official report of Cul. Fremont upon the practicability of the Pacific Railroad project, will be highly favorable, as well in respect to

His examination, made as they were through the Ro:ky Mountains in the dead ot winter, will expose the worst obstacles which the enterprize wi.l have to encounter. The route persue 1 between the Mormon settlement and the Pacific terminus was entirely new, and presented many advantages over any other pre viously explored. The route ranges in its variations but little more than a single degree of latitude from a straight line. The success of the expedition was more fortunate than formerly reported, as only one man was lost, who died from excessive
