Local and River Brevities. . The telegraph wires are again down. Mr. Earnhari, the telegraph operator, started oat on horseback yesterday, to travel over the whole line, and to far as he can pur it in good order. It will not be Ion; before new posts occupy the place of the old ones, when we hope there will be no more complaints of the line. The dispatches we publish to-day, were received at Vinctnncs, and forwarded to us by railroad. We thank the operator at Vin-, Cannes for his attemijti, and hope he will repeat the favor. The river is reported falling at points ; above. Has been falling Itere several days lowly. In a fine stage to the mouth. - The Justice arrived here from the Wabash Monday afternoon, bringing a good freight. She left Lafayette Friday evening We regret to learn Capt. Vauhan was left at 1 Vincennes, with an eye in a dangerous conditio so very swollen and painful that be could not proceed further. We hope to hear of Lta .n..!tr V . ..vrt. George Sutton, the pilot of the Alabamian, who was so severely injured a few weeks since in an affray a ith the police of Lafayette, is fast recovering. His numerous river friends, who had expected his death 1 d tlj, will be happy to learn of his recovery. We are aNo inforutod that the citizens of Lafayette condemn the conduct of their officers j in their wanton attack upon the crew uf the Aiabamiaii. The Ambassador arrived here from St. Louis last Monday nij(ht, bound for Pitts burgh with the heaviest toad of freight on board which has gone up the Ohio this sea- j son, on one boat, without the assistance of barges. Two ftJM of thi freight were 20U tons hemp and BjMH bkls flour for Wheeling, rather s ciiauge of trade iu a manner, hhe had freight al-u fsjf Pidsburgb audi uterinedipjints. We pr.-sunie, however, that this is a mistake, as the J. G. Cine brought ihe mail yesterday muri. ing. The J. M. Slockwell arrived here early yesterday morning, with aboul 600 tons of freight, consisting of 272 tons ol Rtilroad iron for the E. &. C. Raihoud, snd about 330 tons of merchandise. The Storkwell will now lay up for several weeks for repairs, having run near nine mouths without paint isg or repairing.
