I houd be settlsd where lhr fc,n,,ieQ : without the circumlocution and evasive diplorsatir jugglery hitherto resorted to by the Banish government. It is lumored in the po'itical circles at Washington, that our Minister, Mr. Soule, has, in his demands upon the Span.sh government, exceeded his delegated powers; that he is at perfect loggerheads with the Spanish authorities; that his situation is irrecoik i I and that LvJ will be furnished with I p .ssport to leave for home immediately. Tbe Washington futon intimates that the csu: of Mr. Soule will be sustained, and that his diplomatic errors, (if he has committed any . are mere technical quibbles and do not essentially effect the matters in dispute at all. The general impression seems to be that the chances for amicable a-'justment are further off than ever. Our government has taken a position from which it cannot recede without disgrace. Outrages have been accumulating fcr a long time, and our government has long been temperizing in their settlement. She has now only modestly asked reparation for past and indemity for the future, aed" ,t is to be hoped i that she will resolutory maintain that position. The only hope that our peaceful relations with Spain will not be disturbed, lies in the act of Spain acceding to our demands, or that tbe United States government will submit to being further outraged and disgraced. Fire. A fire broke out night before last in the storerooms occupied by Messrs. Scheeffer & Schroeder as a tobacco shop and cigar manufactory, consuming a large portion of the stocK, and destroying the entire inner portion of the building, leaving but the hull remaining unconsumed. The fire companies, with their usual energy, were promptly on hand after the first alarm, and to their untir ing exertions may be attributed the savino- . . of the adjacent buildings. The case of Edwin Forrest, the American tragedian, against N. P. Willis, for libel, was Bl in the Common Pleas, but was psstponed for a day or two. Damages were laid at 620,000. We learn that the Morkmen engaged in the erection of this noble structure commenced laying the first course of stone this season only a few days ago, the unusual inclemency of the weather having prevented opperations sooner. The height of the column is at present about one hundred and fiity-tv0 feet. Owing to the smallness ol the force employed there being but thirty men, including- masons 'and stone-cutters and the want of funds, the work does no progress so rapidly as it ought. Last) ear but twenty-six feet was! Btiuea to tne height of the monument, and this year there will be added probably not more than thirty or thirty -five feet. At such a rate, ten years at least will be rsq jired toi complet its erection. The height of the obelisk, when finished, will be five hundred feet; a.id it will be fifty.! live feet square at the base, and thirtv-three feet square at the top.
