with half a rrevr, ami no known place of destination. Surely editora are now-a-daya paying pretty dearly for endeavoring to turn iah their readers with esrly and important new. stets asafcsMat Masit. At New Orleana on the 30th ult., John Woodward, of Missouri, libelled the steam boat St. Louis, in the U. S. District Court, in admiralty, for $1,915, ao amount of loss alleged to have been sustained in the aale of
which from coming down light generally,! lot of corn which the master of the St.

shippers, the necessity ia not apparent of exclusively Kvansville and New Orleans steamera, although as a matter of convenience to our busineaa men they would be very welcome. But there is a "present remedy"
without adopting thia. If, aa we suggested, steamboat clerks will merely say io their mauifests made out in anticipation of their
their arrival at New Orleans, what freight
they receive from Louisville and what Irom Kvansville, and New Orleans editors will
copy in their papera such manifests as they do the present ones that is ail t lie justice Kvansville wants, and it appears to us a very easy remedy. We should think officers of boats which receive ao much patronage from this city, and which but for our business would olten be compelled to leave the Ohio river light, would feel under obligation to do this justice to Evanaville. They make a false statement, when in their mani lasts they asy they receive all their freight from Louisville, when probably three-fourthsof it comes from this city. We sre sure, if the matter be properly presented to them, their own sense of justice and their desire to cultivate the good feelings of our business men. will at once prompt them to the right sction. We have conversed with several officers of these large boats on this subject, snd they appear perfectly well disposed to grant the favor or justice which we have a-ki-d in the name of our citizens. It is to be hoped our shippers will assist us in calling the attention of commanders and clerka of steamers to thia subject so important to us all. Evanaville has within the last few years assumed a business Importance as a river city, that places her somewhat above the towns and trading points on the Ohio, which meet with no especial notice on the manifests of boats. She is annually increasing this importance. Her citizens are doing everything not only to advance her prosperity, but to make her true position and business known abroad. Under such circumstances, they are unwilling to see a very impcrtaut means of making this business known at the great Southern Metropolis, entirely lust throogh tbe injustice, although not intended as they know, of persons receiving the benefit of this business. May we not then call
Loois agreed to carry to thst city, but fsiled to do so, thereby subjecting libeilant lo the inconvenience of getting said corn brought down tbe river by other means, and occasioning a decrease in the market value thereof to ihe amount claimed. The case ia to have a hearing at some future aetting of the Court. By a recent decision of Judge Pirtle in the chancery court, it appears that it 1 a hazard UN business to credit parties who charter a stesmbost for trip or two, or season. He has decided that when a boat is chartered, there is not a lieu on the whole boat in favor of any one who his lurnished materials for repairing or supplies for equipping her, but ;hat the interval of the churterer only is subject to the lien, and that tbe owner of the boat is in no tvay responsible for such debts. The suit in question was brought in by H.
R. Purmellbaker, and others, against the steamer Mary Stephens, while in charge of Capt. Ayres. Sfi-lou lircaK in I lie I until. We learn from a private letter from Washington, Ind., thai the Aqueduct across Prairie Creek, two miles above Mayaville, gave way on the night of the 10th int., and that oavgation is consequently intercepted.
Tue break draina the water from several
miles below Mayaville. It is calculated that it will take from two lo three months to repair the Aqueduct, so as to permit navigation to be resumed. We trust W. J. the Colonel for a duel. Kentucky' noble son accepted the challenge and named the preliminaries, viz: With Western rifles 60 paces in Hoboken, at o'rlock on Thursday (yesterd iy). As per appointment, the Colonel and his second were awaiting on the ground the forthcoming of one if John Ball's best, but he was not to be seen. Presently his second came hearing a note to the Colonel, with an apology which settled that affair. The Colonel says he would not so contend but for the misfortune that has so often baffled him in the pursuit ol a wife. He saya there is a young lady in Evanaville he would have willingly fought a half dozen duels for, cou d he have hoped to obtain her heart and hand. I have no doubt there are a dozen. He says he, like your Mr. M , has lost about $50,000 in disappointments, and is now resolved to lose no more. So. should the Col. not kill any one, nnd no one kills him, snd the girl's mind should'nt change, I will probably sea him married aboot the 20th irst.
