DAILY JOURNAL.!

Local and River Brevities. The river commenced rising at St. IiOuii last Thursday evening and to Saturday noon had risen 3 feet. The Upper Mississippi and Missouri are rising. The Lower Mississippi is now in a tery high stsge, and all the low grounds in soma qusrters overflowed. The Sarenak No. 2 is hard aground near New Madrid. Her stern is high out of " water, and the whole boat nearly clar of the river, with the river falling at that puint very fast. She has on board nearly 800 tons freight. The Faahion will be here this rnorning from St. Louis. She it in the regular packet line, and will take paxsenges to Lou isville in time for the mail boats, if sre arrive here by noon. We notice that the subject of shade trees on public streets is being agitated in m.ny western eM a. We have a number of times called the attention of our citizens to planting shade livsja in front of their lots This is the proper sesson. Every man owning a lot will increase its value, and adJ to the beauty of the particular street upon which It ia located, by planting shade trees in its front. Attend to it at once. You wilt never regret i The Empire arrived here yesterday morning f.om Louisville, and forthwith commenced taking in freight. The took on board a large quantity before leaving The steamer Elephant has been sold at St. Louis to D. Emmeraonand R. (i. Underwood, and will continue in the N. Orleans trade as he retolore. The price paid was $ 000, ca.b. Yesterday was a fine cool day for electioneering. The candidates were just about as busy as we ever saw a set of good fellows under similar circ umstances. Every one beaten in the race, has at least the coneolation ofplenty of company and those elected will know they had to work for their suecess. The F anny Smith arrived here ye.terday inornin?, and put off considerable freight. Capt. Dunham was hale ami hearty We thank Mr. S. Vertmn. In attempting to land the mail at Columbus, the yawl was capsized with the mail and two men; the men were saved, but the mail was lost: however, it contained nothing, but was an em 'ty bag. The Telegraph No. 2 was at our wharf at an early hour yeaterdr.y morning from St. Louis, from which place she brought the latest dar.es of course. There is no belter boat in the trade. Passengers will always find both boat and officers up with the times. The Jenny Lind arrived here yesterday from the Wabash with a large load of corn and some other articles of produce. Politics had nothing to do with the election yesterday. We sre glad to see political matters entirely discarded from the local elections. Thus are we enabled to secure the services of men for their real -worth, or general popularity founded upon their worth. Our markets are but poorly attended as yet by the country people. Rut few vegetables are brought in. Indeed the market ja badly supplied with everything at present, .but we look for a better condition of affairs soon as the weather mellows down. I..
