DAILY JOURNAL!

Local and River Brevities, The Telegraph wires continue in worklug order. Late dispatches will be found in to-day's paper. The beautiful and swift Belle Sheridan arrired here yesterday morning al 1 1 J o'clock from New Orleans. She brought ud m tiates of the evening of the 22d, and was thus lets than six days on her trip up. This proves her a f ist boat. She had no freight for this place. Capt. Ned Montgomery was board. He authorized us to ii'forin the on es of Evansville he wanted their company t j , down to Henderson on h.s return, and that they would find the Delle Sheridan ready for tbeir reception, and the officers disposed to ; contribute in every manner to their enjoy- . i a r k,r i j ,l u a ment. After the delightful dance they had , on board the Beile Sheridan, while she laid here on hr last trip down, this elegant boat is their especial favorite, and Capt. Montornery is their beau ideal of a steamboat of- . ,. , , I ficer. He says the ladies command the Sheridan when she lies at Evansville. By the 'way, we thank Mr. J. B. Banham, clerk, for favors. The Sheridan will leave Louisville to-day, and be here to-morrow morning. She will take but little freight at Louisville, and art presume intends making a quick trip. We learn from the Louisville Courier -that a new packet for the Green River trade ialaily expected there. It i called the W. A. Eaves, ander charge of Capt. Baird, and is said to be the most complete boat ever "built for that trade. She will be welcome. The R. II. Winslow was here yesterday morning from Cincinnati with a larjye freight. She remained here, however, four or five hours taking in produce, and left laden to the guards. ; The fast Pike was down yesterday morning with the mail. She always passes at an early hour, her machinery having the singular power ol turning her wheels remarkably fast. The clerks forgot their usual favors yesterdav. Louisiana Firm to the Union. New StaUAMs, March 20. The Nebruka resolutions introduced into the House of Representatives of this State, deprecating the aitatiau rpoo the slavery j question, and declaring the compromise a finality, have been unanimously passed. Charleston, March 22. James Sinkler, a member uf the South Carolina Legislature, is dead. We have also to announce the death of Hon. Kerr Bnyce, a much beloved and wealthy merchant ol this city. He leaves property valued at over a miJlion of dollars. Ra-leioo, N. C. March 23. II n. Wm. A. Graham is a candidate for the United States Senat from this State. A !. L ' A N ..s WITH SPAIfl AiAISST THE U. States. Jt is stated that some important developements have lately occurred, showing the full significaney of lord Clarendon's declarations in Parliament relative to their American policy, referring to which, the Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia American says: "It is now fuily established that an offensive and definitive alliance has been formed against the United States for the protection of Spanish interests in Cuba. The great navah armaments of the three powers are to be used as weil agaii.st us as against Russia. The ntxt obj 'Ct of the Anti-American alliance is the protection of Mexico Santa Anna has received assurance that if he finds it expedient at this time, to sei1, for a very large cam of money, an entirely worthies strip of territory on the Xortheru frontier, he shall be compensated by the addition of British Honduras on the South, a far more valuable and important province to Mexico. For this sacrifices Great Britain ill receive indemnity in the shape of an arrangement tor the ultimate payment of the debt to her subjects by Mexico; and prehaps will event receive a portion of the money payable by the United States under the Gadsden treaty." Glorious News' -We learn that the Straight-Line Railroad is certain to be located through our town. The amount that we were required to raise which was 8100,000 is nearly all subscribed and will undoubtedly be made up before the time given us will expire. This is glorious news, and will give anew life to business of every description. People can now see the importance of our location as a town. Being located in a rich and fertile country, connected north and oouth by the Wabash and Erie Canal, east and west by the Ohio and Mississippi road, and the Straight-Line road, being located through this place and made a crossing point every one can see our sdvantages, and Wash ington is bound to be an important and thriv !Og town, not only as a place of business, fcrt in popu'ation also, Irt all hail this event with rapturea of joy.
