The Golden Gate on her last trip to St. Loui-, struck a rock at Cape Girardeau, but finally got to the place of her destination in a leaking condition, and had to go on dock. The Fashion broke some of her machinery on her last trip to St. Louis, and was delayed in her arrival. She wua compelled to lay over her regular trip for repairs, and w ill tike her p'ace the next regular day. The PUe arrived here Saturday morning, from St. Louis, punctual to her time. Davi'i Scwell was executed this afternoon at 2 o'clock. A large crowd th-onged the streets from an early hour and it was at time. dithcult to supi ress the disorder. The Clergyman then prayed, the prisoner joining audibly. The hangman then adjusted the rope, and the prisoner at the juncture, requested prayer from the Sheriff, which was j made by hun. Sewell then commenced pray er, during which the bheriff gave the signal. The hangman then touched the lever Sewell swung in the air his neck was broken immediately. About halfan hour alter execution tiie body was cut down and placed in the coffin to be buried on Sunday. Sewell displayed firmness and resignation throughout. California Itcjaie. Exsekada, March 14. Those remaining were depend nt, and had abandoned all hope of success. Mining accounts are exceedingly favorable. The quantity of irold dug is the largest for many mouths. All the miners are prospering. An Indian from the interior arrived at Panama, and says that Strain's party was kilied by wild beasts. The etory is not believed. It is supposed that the party was killed by the Indians. Baltimore, March 24. Nothing south of Mobile. Ex-Senator Clemens has written a letter which appears in the Huntsville (Ala.) Advocate, explaining his opposition to the Nebraska bill, in which he snys President Pierce said but a few days sirce in conversntion with a northern Senator and mysell, ard gave it as his decided opinon, that Mr. Douglas' bill was a proposition in favor of freedom, and he added that if it should pa;s, although wc might absorb the whole of Mexico, not another slave State would come into the Union. He expressed j;reat surprise at the opposition it met with from the north, and equal surprise that the south should be willing to take it. Cincinnati, March 24, P. M. The river is receding slowly.
