MONDAY MO R N I N Gxx .: : M A RC H 27 Uncle Tom' Cab! n on the Stage. Who has not read Undo Tom's Cabin! ; tnd who has read it, no matter what his opinions on the morale of the work, that has not . bten carried through its pages in I tide of sympathy, by the exquisite art of the writer1 Well, let that be as it may, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" dramatized, appears to have proven the most popular exhibition which has been before the public for years, and free from the objectiona which have subjected the book itelf to the abuse of those who havo no sympathies with the peculiar opinions of tho au- j thor. There have been several dramas of this work, all differing, and all of different merits. The one acted at New York had a run of over an hundred nights. It was declared one of the most affecting and popular dramas ever put upon the stage. This same version will be presented to this public tomorrow evening at Apollo Hall, by Shires' Company, which has acquired a fine reputation in the larger cities. This company, we understand, has all the scenery, the actors, &c. for giving the drama in an admirable manner. They have at every place visited, had a run of many nights, which convinces us the Drama as produced by this company, has distinguishing merit. The Madison Banner devotes a column to this company, and thus closes: We cannot, having witnessed the performance, wonder that there in such a fascination in it. We have realized its spell. We saw flooded eyes and starting tears attest the impressiveness of this drama. We can only advise our readers to witness it for themselves, and suppose nearly every one of them will do so. This is a moral drama, and we understand there is nothing in the whole play to which the most moral may object. Probably the best proof of this is, that in several cities in Northern Ohio, it has been acted in churches. But our readers must judge for themselves. We can only say, that in this company are some excellent actors, and they have the aid of fine scenery. Go to Apollo Hall to-morrow evening. Gore to New Hakxoht. Mr. Semmons will start to-day for New Harmony to supply the people there requiring any such articles, with the Brazillian Pebble Spectacles. These spectacles appear to have given very good satisfaction to those who have used them in this city, and have secured excellent recommendations. Mr. S. has disposed of a great number of spectacles here, as we are sure he will do in New Harmony. We invite our friend there to give him a call. Those using the ordinary spectacles, or whose defective sight may require these artificial assistants, had better try the Brazillian Pebble Spectacles, as they possess many advantages. New Goods. Mr. A Embich has been snaking large purchases of ppring and sum mer goods in the eastern cities, and hia first purchases have just arrived, and will be open for inspection to-day. The ladies will find a great many articles worthy their special at tention among these goods. Mr. Embich is acquainted with the demands of this market, and we are sure his stock of goods when fully opened will not be surpassed by any in thicity. Call early before the "richest patterns are sold. Mr. E. will soon be at home wilh large additions to his present stock. JX" Messrs Mack &. Lobi.-natine received last Saturday a large lot of styl. ah ready made Clothing, just from the manufacturers at Cin cinnati. These goods are made in a substanial manner, of the latest style, and comprise some very fine clothing. Mr. Lobenstine has just returned from Cincinnati, and his stock of goods will be found not only excellent but cheap. ' . opened a large lot of reaoy made Clothing at his store on Main street, nearly opposite the ßank. Those wanting anything in that line had better call and make first selections. They will find a full assortment ol Clothing snd gentlemen's furnishing goods. Busimess at Mt. Cabmel, III. The first steamboat that floated on the Western Rivers was the "New Orleans" and built at Pittsburgh in 1811, by Robert Fulton, and commanded by Mr. De Hart. Capt. Walker. This individual, who has recently introduced himself into notoriety by constituting himself President of the new Republic on the Pacific, is represented to possess many ennobling elements of character, and ia described by the Richmond Mail as being a regular Locomotive-Yankee. He is of Scotch origin and was raised in Nashville, Tennessee. He was ever known by his classmates as "Billy," abbreviated more on account of his youth than any familial ity with them. He took his degree at the age of sixteen, and attracted great attention, by a beautiful classical speech on Texas Independence. Hie revolutionary ideas evinced in this production of his ycuth, were extremely novel, and an apt precrjrser of his recent adventures. He directed his attention first to the study of medicine, and took a degree in Philadcl phia, and also in Paris. He soon abandoned pills for the profession of law, and became somewhat eminent as a bar-lawyer in the city of New Orleans. He figured in politics largely, and soon become enamored of the editorial chair. Afterwards becoming more reckless he married a lovely Virginia lady, went to California, and is now President of a one-horse Republic. His life has been well spiced with variety being only thirty years of age now. Flour A waiting Shipment. The Albany Journal learns from a gentleman from the West, who is conversant with the flour tnde, and who is well posted up in regard to the resources of the country, that there are now 223,000 bbls. of flour at Toronto, awaiting the opening of the lakes to be forwarded in bond to Oswego, and thence by railroad and canal to New York, to be shipped to Eu rope. Tue New York Canals. It is probable the canals will not be opened before the first of May, as the great quantity of frost remaining in the ground, in consequence of the very little snow that fell during the past season, renders it impracticable to open them before that date, it is claimed that there is more frost in the ground at the present time then there has been for the last twenty years. We learn that 64,500 have been subscribed for the erection of a College at Rockport, Ind., this season. It will be beautifully situated near the Bpot where the Evansville road enters town. fXjJ A meeting of the citizens of Htitsouville, III., has been held to adopt a charter for the "City of Hutsonville." Ttie Richmond i'aüadiuin of lust I week, gives the following account of a very ! singular BCCSM which occurred on the open-! ui :r of the court in Newcastle, Henry couutv, I ndiuna : At Newcastle we found quite n excitement existing in regard to the President, Judge Authouv. The court met on Monday morning, but before proceeding to business, a member ot a Henry county liar presented a fw'tifiatn M'irtii. Iii, . i.-ri mäni iur .l I Ku II petition, signed by every member of the Bjr in that court, askmg in most respectlul terms his lienor to resign his se.it upon the bench. The gentleman who presented the petition stated, however, that in case he would not resign the petitioners had agreed among themselves that they would not do any business in the court 8j long us he presided. Another gentleman addressed the court, re-asserting the determination they had agreed to, and urged in very plain terms the necessity of a lesignalion. Another followed, expresing the high personal respect he entertained for the Judge as a gentleman and a tiwrn-keeper, but justice required him to say that he regarded the present incumbent of the bench as utterly unqurtlifi d for the plare he occupied. and hope he wuuld resign. He was followed I by another, and he by another, and he by another, until every member had in plain terms expressed his opinion as to his incapacity, &c. With a nenchnlance peculiar to his Honor, he told the gentleman of the Bar that he I would think ot the matter, und in the mean- i time would proceed to business. He called j the cases upon the docket, and every case which had not been compromised was con tinMM ratil the next term ol the court. The deck was crowded with pussengcrs, and the quiet and orderly had no peace or rest, nnd were beset every moment. Captain Tucker then determined to quell the riot, and summoning his crew, among whom were twenty-one Spaniards, and arming them w;th short eb bs, hatchets, and whatever weapons he could, ho marched to the lower deck and endeavored to restore order and put the rioters on Bhore. The rioters laughed at him, and one big fellow shook his fist under his nose and defied the whole crew. The Spaniards, in solid phalanx, each armed with u club and a long ki ife, were ordered to advance and seize the ringleaders. Then ensued a scene of strife and contusion seldom 6een on the deck nf a Fteamboat. The Spanish crew, however, were victorious and mmaged to secure I iur ot the ringleudere who were tied neck and heels and peace as at once restored. The chief of the mob was not caught, and for several day could not be found, and it was ihoi.ght that he, together with four or five others, had jumped overboard and either drowned or swam ashore. Several of the cabin passengers aver that they distinctly saw three or four men in the river, and as the affair occurred soon alter lhe b(U , N. Orleans it was impossible to tell who was lost. During the melee, a coal boatman of the name of lllakely was much hurt, and dangerously stabbed in the rear. He was taken care of by the officers of the boat, nnd sent to the Hospital. The mate of the Trabu-, received a cut in the hand from a knife which he caught just as one of lhe mutineers made a lunge at him. The four that were a1 rested were put off of the b.jat soon after the affray was quelled, and when the boat was in the neighborhood of Millikins Bend, the big fellow that hud been missing, was found, and was forthwith set ashore. He had been secreted under the I cylinder timbers. No further outbreak oc curred during the trip, though many threats were made just before the boat reached port. The discipline of the Spaniards, and the determination of lhe officers of the boat put an effectual stop to the lawlessness of the coal boatmen. If I I l:.
