Tftstaakesj war Day, According to the Governor's appuntment, Hhis Jay is appointed fur general thanksgiving throughout the State. We suppose it will be, or should be observed by all churches. The ungodly public will, however, feel most thankful when the fumes of roasted turkies, I fite, rise up to their nostrils. Uur young tnen generally intend having a great game if Ball, with a dinner at Dr. Evans to wind up, the amusement. It will at all events, be a general holiday, not only, in this State, but in great many others. Sis Fstiier To-iuorrowr. According to old custom, the printers do !no manner of work Thanksgiving day; at least inside of printing offices and we would not dare venture on the experiment of trying to make them break old habits. Therefore, there will be no paper-issued from this office t)-morrotr. Not many of our patrons will begrudge the printers one holiday, nor will be pt to lose quite so much by it as we do. The southrriicr. We had the pleasure of tukiug a trip to (he mouth of the Ohio, tnd returning on the steamer Soetherner. This is one of the new low pressure steamers, just built to run in the Louisville and St. Louis trade, and one of the most splendid boats on the river. Her out ward appeara'ice does not differ from boats built on the oi l plan. She has a beautifully modeled hull, and runs very swiftly. Her engines are splendid as they are powerful, and built on the plan of the engines of -Eastern steamers, with her big cylinder in the hold These engines are adapted to our usual Wes tern boilers. They cost more than the ordinary engiues, but s ive fu.l and are .-"-. She only uses fifty pounds of steam, running her lastest, nearly a hundred pounds less o' steam than under the sumo circumstances are used by the old engines. The Southerner has a very large cabin, finished in the most elegant style, yet with nothing gaudy marking its faith The rooms ere large and aisy. The ladies cubin is very handsomely Htiished, and richly furnished, Wt have not space to enter into the fu'l de. tails which the magnificence of the steamer really deserves. She has commenced running regularly in the old Louisville and St. Louis line, and is unexcelled in speedy, comfort or beauty by any boat now in the trade. The. late crew of the Fashion are on board of the Southerner. Capt. Anders, the ever po pular captain, commands her, whilst Charley I Schultz, one of the most accommodating clerks on the river, presides at the office. We th ink these gentlemen for a thousand kind attentions, and wo were by no means singled out from the crowd as an object of particular notice. Every passenger MM be pleased not only witli the boat, but with the officers. Those bound down stream may have an opportunity of testing these to-mor-row morning. 0 The swift steamer Messenger, Xo. 2, of the Union line, and the splendid new Southerner, were trying their speed on their last trips from St. Louis. They proved themselves equals in speed. The Messenger made a little the quickest time to Evansville, but the Southerner made all the regular mail Bfl landings. For an -hour at a time they ran aide by side. Both boats at different times in the trip passed each other under full headway. 0OThe elongated Pike passed down yes terday, bringing the mail. She is a fine boat tindeed, and fast. 07" The unfortnnate young; man who atneaajiiledto take his own life last Monday, at Mr. M. A. Liwrencc's marble store, is out of danger from the wound he then received. The derangement of the mind was caused by Si is deaJing out to himself morphene, by mis'talie, instead of quinine, for the chills. He -called Mr. Lawrence into his office, and, after closing the doors, said he could not work any longer and that he had lived long enough, and would undoubtedly have succeeded in his attempt, had the knife not been wrenched from !n in. He is a young man of steady hab:ts an I good moral character. sssssaa P S3 Dh it. voto cas-s half, ouarter and whole boxes Sardines; 11 bov.es ass'd Pickles, Prescrvus, Catsup and Pie r mils; 5 cjisvs wood-box Matches 5 casks salt Petrc; 10 boxes Brandy Peaches and Cherries; I ease Guana Jelly; 10 bbls assorted uts; Scasei Preserved Gioger, 3 cases Table Oil; in.OOO Havana ti Cigars; 4 .ii assortrd Spauish Cigars; UM boxes 8 by lu Win cow Glass, 40 boxea Virginia Tobuceo; Just ree'd per steamer Clutucellor, and for sale low by PKEsi hi:os nr.pnsris THR following rates i f interest wiU be allowed upon deposR. by the Crescent City Bank, vu: Deposits payable on demand, 3 f cent, perunuiira. do ffr 3 luootbs, 4 e So " do, do So 4 do S f du u do. do do 5 to H raonAhs, 6 p do ' do. do do PJ mos. and over 7 f do " do.
