On .hthe contrary, tbey have always regarded the project as oue which defied rivalry from any source. Its friends have pursued a quiet unobtrusive course without reference to any othT line, either in word or deed; until the venerable editor of the Gazette'-threw dawn the glove'" and commenced an unprovoked attack upon wha be was pleased to term a "visionary project" without merit or capital. Even this unwarranted and uncalled for attack was notseirously noticed, by the friends of the "Straight Line," coming as it did, with such an ill grace from the especial "Organ Grinder" of the various soulless institutions and bogus corporations which have rais ed their hydra heads in his devoted town, and under his special "prophesy" flourished a brief season at the expense of honest but deluded individu's, then died out, leaving no other memory behind them but infamy and disgrace. The gauntlet thrown out by the Gazette was justly treated in the columns of the Journal, as a ridiculous attempt to lessen public confidence in the Evansville, Indianapolis and Cleveland road. Such an idea as "rivalry" ever once entered tl e mind of the writer; for if the Paducah and Vincennes proposed road, was as full of merit as the Gazette man is of vanity, it could not posaibly be regarded as a rival of our road. It is nevertheless true, we have heard doubts expressed about the Gazette man's road ever being built, even before the Salt Lake aud Toledo extensions were annexed to the maiu fr-unA, and those doubts were basupon the following considerations: First, that Vinceüües, where the project was first oonceived, if we may judge her by her past history in pu lie enterprizes, could not build the proposed road. Second. It was difficult to discover what conceivable interest Paducah could have in a road that would effectually cut her off from be ng, as she ia, in the low water season, a terminus of navigation between the larger and smaller class of boats, on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. Such a step on the part of Paducah, as encouraging an enterprise that would deprive her of a large moiety of her trade, and build up a rival town some five miles below, looked too suicidal to be credited for a moment. Third. The people al or g the line of the proposed road make no demonstrations iu its favor, apparently satisfied for the present, with the liberal accommodations afforded by the Wabash river. Fourth. The abiding confidence in the belief that "capitalists ar& generally men of sense and discretion, and not easily deluded by misrepresentations" into hazardous investments, led our people (who regard Straight Lines in their conduct and dealings, as well aa in railroads to be of the first importance) to doubt the ability of the Vincennes Live Stock Bro'iets, to procure the aid of foreign capital to build their road. The above are some of the reasons, which caused the Straight Liners to fall into the egregious error that the "Direct line road" would not be built in a hurry. The venerable editor, defines an "airline" to be one that is straight between two given points, and then proceeds to show that an air line from Henderson to Paducah, would lead along the bottom lands of the Ohio, crossing the river not leas than six times, &c., which "seems to him utterly laaftSj :ticable. Grant it and permit us to defioe a direct line, the dignified title of the Gazette man's collection of railroad curiosities which forms his pet line, that is to be b-ilt before any body knows it. A "direct line" if we understand it, means a straight one, between two points. Two of the points given in this case are Vincennes and Paducah. Bv reference to the Mao we find that a directline between these two points I SF - - must inevitably follow the bed of the Wabash river, or the bottom lands along that stream, crossing the same several hundred times be- ( fore reaching the bank of the Ohio, thence 1 in order to preserve the same "direct line,"! the balance of the way must inevitably follow along the bottom lands of that stream, frequantly overflowed as they are, crossing the . r . same only four times.

She consented to the arrangement, and lived with him as his wife for about seven weeks, when sho became impatient to have the marriage performed. She expressed a willingness to abide by the decision, and intimated that she had "rather have the seven dollars as to have Vohn," John paid her the seven dollars and e went away rejoicing. A few days afterwards Mr. Howbacker actually married another lady still more recently from Germany, and on Mouday last, before the honey-moon was over he was arrested for assault and battery upon his new wife, and gave bail to appear at court and answer the charge.
