. Erixoa Jcxavat; I avail oycslf of the opportunity afforded by &tent!;a at thb place, to give you and your readers some as- , const of my trip thus far towards Can Fran j cisco and Oregon. ' On the 22d of April welsft Nrar Orkans on the steamship Daniel Webstrrf a tplen did teasel, worthy aa ttlp can be, cf the il Isstrioes nns che bears. Of l&rgs sc?, and ouUtrippiog the -winds in speed, it was dr Hghtfuf, tfter passlcg the Biliis id btbclJ her careering over the Billows, bounding over the wide waste of waters -as s well trained courser to his goal" To oe there ie no object more intrresting than a steamship at sea none which bringe so strongly ! into one vie the . importance and the insignifi cance, the etrenth and the weakness of man. Standing on deck, while, the noble vessel ploughs through the billows, the voy ager looks out in vain , for some , object on which .to rest Lis eye some landmark by which he nay know how far he has come and in what direction he ia going. In vain he scans the distant horizon; in vaia he strains his eyes until the object on which he had fix ed them, and which looked "like seme distant mountain peak," lifted by the' wind, floats swsy from 'his view and leave? naught above him , than the clear blue uiy, sod around him, aa far as the eye can reach, the "wide, wide sea." Wave after wave, in end less succession, rolls against the bow of the ship; the wind roara through her rigging but her course is onward, still onward; for there is a power invented by the genius of man, propelling her against the combined force of winds and waves; while in a box near the bow iaa little pilot not larger than a reed or strsw, which, with sleepless vigil ance and unerring accuracy, points out the wsy at all hours and in sll westher, to the destined port. The invention of the steamengine and the mariner's compsss sre justly regarded as among the greatest; and most glorious triumphs of msn's genius. ; And yet how insignificant are these compsred with that infinite power, which wheels mighty orbs, of which earth Is among the least, through the regions of space, with a velocity of thousand of miles in an hour, and with a precision which haa not varied to the extent of the width of a heedie. since' the new born earth first joined the mighty pro cession of moving worlds, and its new notes first blended, in heavenly harmony, with the music of the spheres. That a person should be able to trace s wide ses, (such aa now separates rae from the nearestport of the United States) without reflection, without meditation oa its sublimi ty, without speculstion on the wonders which lie hidden in the nnfsthomed depths; without contemplation ; on the triumphs ef-gmij which enable illiterate mariners to traverse with ease and certain its trackless waters without a thought on the wonders of nature, and without thoughta lifted "above nature to nature's God," that he should never look be yond the little petty avocations and amuse ments of the ehip, which conveys him, seem. almost incredible. What shall we say of one who, in riew of objects grand and elevating, indulges continually in low ribaldry and obscene jests and disgusting profanity 1 Such seems to be the only pleasure of several tn board this ship. Are thy men? Yes brutes would disown alliance or connection with any yen us which so fsr out-bruted them creatures so grovelling, filthy, and. foul. Most of these are ateerage passengers, who come often on the upper deck, ia violation of the rules of the ship; but some of the cabin passengers, are not much better, although they wear better clothee. Let not ladies who who contemplate a trip to California, be deterred from nndertsking it by any apprehension of coming in contact with these foul creatures. There ie a part of the ship appropriated to theo, which cannot be polluted by the presence of such obscne wretches; wnere.atleaat. If they should Intrude, they will be restrained with the bounds of decency. There ie a considerable number, of ladies on board, most of them on their wsy to Call" fornia; one of them, with her husband, to Oregon. All of them except one, were seasick, but hsving recovered, seemed much delighted with their trip. Indeed I see not hew it could be otherwise. With the bracing sea breeze, the exhilaration procuced by tie rolling, or rather winding motion of the ship, a good table, good beds to sleep on, and (barr ing the profanity and obscenity of a few) good company, the voyage haa thus far been far more agreeable than a trip to New Orleans on one of the finest river packets. I intended when I commenced to give you some description of the town of Sao Juan in whose harbor we are now lying at anchor, together with the Prometheus, s eamsbip from New York, with 390 passengers aboard. But I must abruptly conclude, as a boat has just come in sight to convey' us up to San Juan del Sur on the Pacific side. Before I conclude however, I will state to the benefit of those who design going to California or Oregon, that pricea by this (the Nicaragua) lias are as follows: First cabin 0300, second do 0225; steerage 1110. These prices include the passenger's transit across the isthmus, but he is charged extra for his baggage at the rate of 15 cents a pound. The second cabin bears about the same relation to the first that the gentlemen's does to the ladies' on board a river packet. The passengers in both have equal access to all parts of the ahtp, enpy. eqsl privileges eat at the aaat table. ' Tee dirsrlnte bttwten tha ls-abe;t
