The citizens of Cincinnati, without respect to party, held an "indignation meeting" on tbe 37th, to express their dissatisfaction with the.course taken by ' Mayor - Snellbaker, in preventing the Re?. Mr. Kirkland from preaening in the market place the Sunday previous. We are not disposed to meddle with the local differences which exist between the citizens of Cincinnati and their mayor, except so far as the usurpation of offi cial power, as recently excised by Mr. Snellbaker, becomes a public question. ' So gross an infringement of one cf the most cherished principles of our government, "the right cf speech' secured and guarantied to every American citizen, at once becomes t matter of public concern, and it is the duty of all good citizens to resist and suppress all such violent assumptions of power at all hazzanls. How much less than perjured is that officer, after having swnrn an official oath "to support the constitution of tbe United States," who will trample underfoot one of its plainest1 provisions, and assume by virtue of a little "brief authority" to depiive American can citizens of their dearest civil rights! We append a series of resolutions adopted at the meeting, which evince a noble and pa triotic determination, to maintain their right and the dignity of "freedom of speech" against any further official innovations, and at any satrifice. A committee of one hundred of the best citizens of Cincinnati was appointed to wait upon Mayer Snellbaker, and request him to resign; 'the committee fully endorso the sentiments of one ot the speakers on tbi occasion, Rev. Mr. i Priestly,' in repudiating His Honor as a vile thing, civilly, socially, and politically. Whereas, The right of the people to as semble in the public market place or streets to consult upon public affair; or tho right cf any individual to speak or preach in the public places in this city has not been quetione 1 but always conceded, and believing that it accords with the principles o. democracy, and, whereas, D. T. Snellbaker, Mayor of the city, supported by a large body of police, did, on last Sunday morning, under the pretext of quelling or preventing a riot, peremptori ly stop the Rev. Mr. Kirkland from speaking whilst addressing a large number of people who were peaceably listening to hia addre&i; therefore. Resolved, That tbe Mayor of the city-difl, o.rUiat occaaion, transcend his authority that nis conduct was calculated to cause the mischief that he wished to prevent by a rot or a sort of self-deience against presumptuous officials..' - - - Jfexouedyrtiat the police (some of them It least) by their tyrannical course in attempt ing to prevent the expression of disapproba . tion by the people present at tbe official acts of the Mayor, showed by their promptitude to do their master's bidding .particularly in crushing freedom and elevating desp tism., Rerolved, That as freemen we claim that i is the right, aye the duty, of every individual to express his convictions of the acts and tendencies of any public society, institution or sect, be it benevolent, political, or rcli gious. . - Resolved, That we believe it the sacred doty of every American to become acquaint ed with the teachings and acts of every ruli gius denomination, be they good or evil, and judge of them by the standard which they themselves have raised. Resolved, Thatw, as American citizens will oppose the attempts of any religious body .to incorporate their power or influence into that of the government, either general or local. Resolved, That in view of the premises Mr. D. T. Snelbaker be requested to resign Ais omce as aiayor. Resolved, That this meeting is in favor o sustaining any person who desires to address the people in our market spjees on any tcpic 01 puDIic interest and concern. Onrnevr Poatmstster. Ben. Stinson, having received the necessary papers from the Post Office Department, will enter upon tho duties of the office 'today. That he will prove faithful and compe tent, we have no doubt, In parting with Mr. Chandler, we deem it but justice to him to say that, he has been a courteous andobli - King offic-r, and, we believe, Lis discharged the perplexing duties of his office with gneral satisfaction, both to the people and the department. Another Railroad. Meeting. ' Pursuant to publie notice and adjournment, a large and highly respectable meeting was held on Saturday erening, April 30th, at Foster's Hall. ; , ' Hi Hon. Mayor Hopkins, was called to the chair, and P. Q. O'Riley appointed secretary. - J. G. Jones, Esq., addressed the meeting at considerable length, in an able and efficient speech, showing the immense advantages to. be gained by the. early construction of the proposed Strait Line Railroad, and urged that le whole of the enlargement! be taken in, and that the City then includedtake $250,000 in stock. . .. ,- .... Hon. Willard Carpenter was next called on and adJre.sed the meeting at great length, showing the importance of this road as a stock paying investment, and it effect upon real estate, in enhancing its value, the immense increase of trade and travel secured to our city, and showed satisfactorily from reliable statistics, that this road would be the very best paying stock in Indiana. John Ingle, "Jr., was next called to the
Island, and fully and clearly -demonstrated the necessity of the immediate construction of this road, and the duty of the City to sub scribe a liberal amount of stock without delay. Mr. Ingle's speech Yas a spirited exposition of bis own practical ideas, derived from long experience in railroad matters and was : re ceived with great enthusiasm by the audience Judge Foster was next called upon, and responded by submitting a motion to the ef fect, that a committee be appointed to devise a plan, to raise tbe requisite amount of stock, and submit such plan to the next meeting. Chas. Viele Esq., offereJ ant amend ment to Judge Foster's motion "that the city of Evansville proper, take $200,000 stock; and that the proposed committee be appoin ted, and prepare and submit their plan for raising said stock, nt the next raeet'ng, The Chiirman, made some pertinent re marks urging the question.
