Reported for the Evansville Journal. - ? Later From Santa Fe. Isdependmce, April 2l..The mall from Santa Fe, in charge of Air. Russe, arrived on the evening of the 18th. The weather was fine and the part met with no molestation, though they met with numerous bands of Indians on the route. Lieut. Ileth, in command of the military post of Fort Atkinson, had determined to attack the Cheyenne Indians, an 1 was only de ferring the attack until the miil had passed. This band during the winter had murdered a discharged soldier upon the p!ains, and though the commandant had repeatedly requested them to give up the murderers, they refused to comply with the demand. Notwithstanding the very insufficient force at the garrison, there being but one company, Lt. Ileth deemed it absolutely necessary to attempt their chastisement, as they have insolently defied nim upon more than one occasion during the last summer. The contest will be rather unequal, and the result is feared. The Government has been guilty of gross neglect in supplying so insufficient a force at a post where there is so much danger, surrounded as they have been during the present summer with from 3,000 to 5,000 Indians of various bands of Arrapies, Csmanches and v a n n t m as ' A despatch was sent by Lt. Heth to the Adjutant of the 6th military department, of the difficulty and circumstance. The Territory of New Mexico waa in a quiet state. Gov. Lne had not returned from bis southern tour.
