DAILY JOURNAL. IH7'o Telegraph Despatches Fanny- Fern's nest Thin p. We think Fanny Fern never wrote a better pair of paragraphs than the following, from the Olive Branch: "Look on this picture, . iso msos that. 'Father is coming! and little round faces grow lung, and merry voices are husheJ, and toys are hustled into the cloeet, and mamma glances nervously at the door, and baby is bribed with a lump of sugar to keep the peace; and father's business face relaxes not a muscle; and the little group huddle like timid sheep in a corner, and tea is despatched as silently as if speaking were prohibited by the statute book, and the children creep like culprits to bed marvelling that S baby dare crow ? loud, now that Father has come.

"Father is coming!" and bright eyes sparkle for joy, and tiny feet dance with glee, and ea- ' ger faces press against the window-pane, and a bevy of tosy lips claim kisses at the door, and puture-bookd lie unrebuked on the table, ; and tops, and balls, and dolls, and kites are ' discussed, and little Susy lays her soft cheek against the paternal whiskers wl'h the most fearless abandon, and Charley geta a lovepat for his 'medal and mamma's face grows - radiant, and the evening paper is read (not .silently, but aloud,) and tea, and toast, and time vanish with equal celerity, for jubilee has arrived, and 'Father has comer" Home Jour. "A Abmy with IUsnebs." As you are whirled along over the Hudson River Railvoid at the rate of forty miles an hour, you '. catch a glimpse, every minute or two, of a man waving something Use a white pockethandkerchief on the end of a stick,' with a satisfactory sort of expression of counterVj ance. If you take the trouble to count, you ' will find that it happens some two hundred

times between Eist Albany and Thirty-first jtreet. It looks like rather a useless, ceremony, at first glance, but it is a pretty important one nevertheless. There are 235 of these "flag men" stationed at intervals along the who!e length of the line. Just before a train is to pass, each one walks over his "beat," and looks to see that every tunnel, switch rail, clamp and rivet, is in good order and free from obstruction. If so, he takeu his stand with a white flag and waves it to the"1 approaching train as a signal to -'come on'j-and come on it does, at full speed. If there is anything wrong, he waves a red flag, or at night a red lamp, and the engineer on seeing it, promptly shuta off the steam, and sounds the whistle to "put down the brakes." Every inch of the road is carefully examined after the passage of each .train. Austrian espoinage is hardly more strict. Albany Jour. CCrAn old philosopher gives the follow ing advice to bsilders: Never erect a house after you are five-and-forty; have five years income in hand before

i you touch a brick, and always calculate the

expense at double the estimate." There is a deal of wisdom in these four lines. House building ruins more people of moderate means than any speculation that they embark in. A man with a surplus of five hundred dollars wishes to build a house that will cost two thousand dollars; he pays the five hundred tfotv fl and gives a mortgage for

j fifteen hundred. To keep up his mortgage

he takes money that should have gone into his business; his business being neglected. becomes unprofitable; this leads to low spirits. down spirits to inactivity, and inactivity to ru ination and a sheriff's sale. The uuhappitst man in the world, in our opinion, is the poor devil who uudertakes to build "before the iigns come right." Cbtijcg Babies. We copy for the sake of humanity the subjoined article sent to the N. Y. Sun by a correspondent: "Having heard of an important discovery, made some years ago, of a ready mode of silencing squalling children, I lately, on board -of a car, on my way from Newark here, embrace an opportunity of testing its virtues, with the most incorrigible little squaller, I think that every shocked the weak nerves of any person. The process is a very simple one - -all I did was to press one finger gently and repeatedly across the cartilage of the child's nose, and -in less . than a minute, to the great amusment of the passengers,it was sound Asleep.. Believing so desirable a piece of information should be generally known, I have concluded to give it publicity." Fools invent and and wise men buy. J.ne genius who taught the people to print Witn steam power, aiea a pauper. m i . " ... vr i nereis a man out wear, who is so bent on accomplishing his purpose, that he become hunch-backed. ' CCrSome of our learned men trouble them selves a great deal about the "age of Seaos tris," when at the same time they are unable to teil tne age of an old maid. CST'Hello, Mister, have you got any grain to sell!" v "No. Why doyou ask!" Because I see you have a rye face. ; ICjOur Devil is such a bright boy that it is unnecessary icr mm to use a candle to - read by.
