No. vir. JftDiAiuroLis, Feb. 15,1853. A. II. Sawders, Esq. Dear Sir: To-mr-the State are expected to be here. A great J in-nmnotitmn fnrii ftn( iat' trial will be had in competition lor a nne sat jn banner representing the crowninjrof the genius of music by two cherubs. It is wor- . t() - the band-r0om ofeven Allan Dodsworths famous performers. wem. uov. Willard will deliver an address to the Convention. I hope to be able to annouure some band from Evanville or "the Pocket" as the lucky oi.el Next Saturday is the day set for the election of the democrat whom the peopie prefer for Postmaster. There are six or eight applicants. The democruts have deciJetl to let every voter wituout distinction of par,y j,ave B gay jn the .. atter. The wiigs generally, I think, will vote for Jacob P. Chapman, conceiving him to posses the cleverness, ability, and disposition to ar.commodate necessary for the office. They don't much but keep up quite a thinking. fheir proclivitives turn spontaneously to him ag lneir Degt choice. A tacit motto seems to prevail among tlicm of several evils choose tne jeast. This p an of manifesting a choirc for poi.,uaster seems to be "all the go" throughout the country, and is certainly a very nsible movent nt. It is certainly very Iain anJ cannot be diiplltejf that those most ;0ritPi) hmilit have a voice in the choice of this most important functionary it is true democracy (not locolocoism) to allow the whigs freesoilers,oiC., to vote and alth ugh their choice has to be m ide among locot'ocoes cxclusvely, they should be thankful for small favors, and unite on the best man. It is yet to be seen whether the appointing power will regard this suggestion or plan favorably; they may, in the fullness of their dignity, consider it as dictation and treat it with disdain, prefering to appoint such persons as may best subserve their own interest. It is said hat no matter who may receive the . , i . j.. a . 1 1 . , plurality vote here, the individual will not re- . , . , 1 1 1 tent: t'itr auuviuiiuriiii vauov ! , ..v., , r , : ... of President Pierce, and will come off a lit tle Letter than "poor relations" usually do. If the, a ministration disregard these ejections, in my humb'e opinion there will be a "muss" raised. . This appears to be the commencement of the war on that huge monster, governmental patronage, and the fight will belong and fierce. Popularillii destined to prevail, and the day will come when postmasters will either be elected directly by the people, or indirectly in this way, and other offi:es who now l ok to. the favor of the "powers that be" for place and position must fÄputincvfcrHi? bt fnr ; lhft f,"r n"n,P In the St nate, on Wednesday, Feb. 16th, the bill to amend the law regulating general banking was passed by ayes, 31, noes, 17. Lithe IIjuso a bill pissed correcting the boundary between Warrick and Spencer counties. On Thursday the Senate passed several bills of a general and uninteresting character, in the forenoon, in the afternoon they did but litt'e. The House engrossed the temp- ranee bill known as Owens bill, whi;h though not as good as the temperance folks wish, h a step or two in advance of anything we have had yet. , On FiJay, in the Senate, bills were passed giving the courts of common pleas jurisdiction in cases of divorce, fixingthe sal try of the Governor's private S cretary at $3,00, providing for the inuurneratbn of all tha white malt iuhabitants of tue State during the present year. The House did but little business and ad journed over until Monday morning. On Saturday the S.nate passed a bill to require county commissioners to refund county tuxes wrongfully assessed and collected in certain cases, and a joint resolution relative to ttking ofi the duty on railroad iron for three veara. Aijourned early. The brobability is that the Legislature will at'journ on the 7th proximo, this day two weeks, if they don't find something "urgent" r -'quiring their action, enabling them to put a liberal construction on the constitution as to time.
