Well, if Whiggery in Southern Indiana has been dubbed Add Sanders, then Whig gery has a name of which it need not be ashamed, bo far as any political inconsi tency or short comings on cur part may be concerned. But if Locofoism about Cannelton may be called Budd Archer, a "greasy spot" without any head, then certainly Cannel'.on Locofocoism is the most absul, wishy-washy, turn-coat, petty of.ice-grasping and small gpoils-lowng faction, every bubbled up from the dregs of the cauldron of politics. P. S. The other Whig about the Journal office alluded to above, was never known, like Archer, to change his politics from the weak to the stronz side, for the ake of the spoils, directly the result of a Presidential election was made known. If he had no higher code of political morals, he might no.v be occupying about as conte mptible a position as the editor of the Express, and have jut about as poor a prospect of bettering himself. As it is, if be is now "on his lat legs," he may congratulate himself that they promise to wear a great deal longer and better than Archer's fn-stbgs, aud will never bear his body a cheerful volunteer to the ranks of the enemy because" in one battle that enemy was victorious. fj7IJy reference to advertising columns it will be seen that friend Jaquess has lost a line mare, which he describe-, an! for the recovery of which he will pay a liberal reward. It may hold the mirror of nature" up to some who read it: 'Nothing so much vexes a physician as to be sent fur in great haste, and to find, after his arrival that nothing or next to nothing, is the matter with his patient. We remember an "urgent case" of this kind recorded of an eminent English surgeon: "He had been sent for by a gentle-man who had just received a slight wound, and gave his servant orders to go home with all haste imaginable, and fetch a certain plaster. The patient, turning a little p tie, said: "Heavens, hir, I hope there is no danger." "Indeed there is," answered the surgeon, "for if the fellow dosen't run like a race horse the wound will be healed before he can possibly get back." Stronar Movement. Ltter from California. Mr. A. H. Variel, formerly of New Harmony, and who left this point for California with the Evansville companies last year, to cross the plains, has written a letter to Mr. Geo. Flower, which we find published in the Mt. Vernon Gazette. We make the fol-
lowing extracts. Speaking of California, he says: The farming. business must be first rate. I subjoin a list of Tavern charges, and the price of provisions. For a man and mule one night, the terms are, supper $1, bed 50 cents, breakfast $1, stabling the mule, and one shilling per lb for the oat-hay to feed him, will swell the bill up to about $5. A drink or a cigar is a separate charge, 25 cts. each. So you see a dollar goes but a little way. Price current of Marysvil!e. Pork and hams 30c per lb. Beef from 20 to 25c, and that seems to be the standing price. Flour $35 per bbl. Coffee 30c. Tea about the same as in the Atlantic States. Syrup $1 25 per gal. Potatoes 7 1/4 per lb, Onions 12 1/2, Cabbage 15c, Turnips 8c. All vegetables grow well, are fine in quality and of large size. One turnip raised at this place, weighed the enormous weight of 73 lbs. Beets grown here are the largest and the sweetest that I ever saw. The labor bestowed on your garden at Harmony would have produced five thousand dollars here. You can sell all that you raise on your ranche for ready money, no truck and turn over here. By taking them to the mines you can make yet more of them. With some means to begin, either at Sacramento or Marysville, in your line of business much more money is to be made with less labor than with you. The climate is loveable. Tho' in the vallies it is said to be very hot in the summer, I am told it is very pleasant on the Coast. A trip on the plains may be felt hard to persons not accustomed to labor and rough living. Yet aged persons stood the journey very well this season, better than many young ones. The chances of sickness and accident are about the same by land as water. By water you pay out much more, and what is spent is lost. By land, you put your means in stock and wagons, and drive all along with you. It is true water way is short—the land long and tedious. But if you get to California safely with the stock it is worth from six to ten times more than you gave for it, in the States. Such a wagon as Albert Fisher stated from Harmony with is worth here from three to four hundred dollars. Michael Craddock's, one hundred, Charles Twlgg's wagon, (the dancing feather) which I now own, about one hundred. Such a cow as you had last winter will sell here for $50 to 100. A fat Ox weighing 800 lbs. sells for $170 on foot He alludes to the impositions practiced upon emigrants crossing the plains, at every trading post, &c., and says: It seems to be one continued system of spoliation. From the time you commence preparations at home until you get here and into business, a man must be on his guard at all points. But once here in business it comes back very fast I assure you. California is the place to make money. I am wintering just at the foot of the snow line in a beautiful valley, one and a half miles [sic] from Foster's Bar on the North Uba River. I have located a small mountain farm, one that I can irrigate with but little labor. We have not sold our team yet but have them at at a ranch at $4 each per month, insured at $80 each from loss. Tell Mr. Nettleton that pork is only $60 per bbl at San Francisco, with a fair prospect for it to be higher. He can make a pile to ship here. Beef is also scarce and will be high for a year to come, as the demand cannot be supplied from the States by one half. So never fear to bring stock here if you wish to come, for you can get from ten to twenty times what they cost in the States, when they are once in the Sacramento Valley. ----- A Patch on both Knees and Gloves On. When I was a boy, it was my fortune to breathe for a long time what some writers term the bracing air of prosperity. JJy moth er light lie the turf upon her form which once enclosed her strong and gentle spirit was what is called an ambitious woman; for that quality which overturns thrones, and sup plants dynasties, hnds a legitimate sphere in the humblest abode that the shadow of pover ty ever darkened. The struggle between the wish to keep up appearances and the pinching gripe of necessitv, produced endless shifts and contrivances, at which we are told, some would smile, and some would sigh. But let me not disturb the veil of oblivion which shrouds from profane eyes the hallowed mys teries ol poverty. On one occasion, it was necessary to send me on an errand to a neighbor in better circumstances than ourselves; and therefore it was necessary that I shoul 1 bo presented in the best possible aspect. Great pains were accordingly taken tooive a smart appearance to my pitched and dilapidated wardrobe, aud to conceal the rents and cha?ms which the envious tooth of time tad tna;e in them; and by way of throwing over my equipment a certain savor hardened hands were enclosed in the unfamiliar casing of a pair of glove.-, which had belonged to my. mother, in days when her years were fewer, and her heart lighter. I sallied furth on my errand, and on my way encountered a much older and bigger boy, who evideutly belonged to a family which had all our dragging poverty, and none of uprising wealth of spirit. His rags fairly fluttered in the breeze, his hat was obstructed cn the most improved principle of ventilation, and his shoes fridn their venerable antiquity, might have been deemed a pair of fo.-sil shoos the very ones on which Shem shuiiled into the ark. He was an impudent varlet, with a dare-devil swagger in his gait,of"Pm as good as you" leer in his eye the very whel; to throw dirt at a horseman, because he was well dressed; to.tear a boy's .ul3es, because he was clean. As soon as he saw me, his eye detected the practical inconsistencies whic.'i characterized my. costume, ind, taking me by tho shoulders, turning me round with no gen- '. i a r i . a' m. tie hand, and surveying me from head to loot, exclaimed with a scornful derision, "A patch em linlh I. ntv nnd tilovcs on!' I still recall the sting of wounded feeling which shot through me at these words. To canon oi tue wonis oi my raggeu men j; when I have observed the practical inconsistencies j which so often mark the conduct of mankind. When, for instance, I see parents carefully
