CCrNine men attacked one of our city watches' one night last week, with a view of giving him a dressing he would remember. Our lone hero defended himself with a knife, and gave the whole of them a battle they little expected. One man was stabbed in the arm, another in the hand, and a thirJ in the side, from the effects of which ho will probably "die while the balance got blow for blow. Our hero got one eye bunged, and a veiy sentimental kind of a nose rather badly peeled in the confl ct, but seems perfectly satisfied with- the result. HCrThe editor of the Joneaboro (III.) Uj -The prcjectof building a line of telegraph along the route of the Illinois Cen ral Railroad, from the mouth of the Ohio' to Chicago, has been talked of; and it is generally conceded that if built, it would prove tf great utility, and pay a handsome profit on money inveated in it. Many rf 'these Our merchants - have their stores and counting-rooms "fitted up handsomely, and with an eye especially to comfort and convenience. Our mechanics have every invention-to save labor. and facilitate their business, and many have comfortable workshops. -But I would 'thank any one who would show me a-SchooI-house in this city that is either comfortable, convenient, or healthful. 'In short, is there one that is worthy the name of School-house? It is high time that our . citizens should awaken to their true interests, and hold out the strongest inducements to perrons to settle here. In my opinion good 'School-houses, and those well regulated, would induce the well informed to settle amongAt ts in fact all who have a care for their children would be favorably impressed. It -is cot the number, -size or beauty, of churches in a city, that give a correc t esti mate of the Godliness -f its inhabitant is their 'dealings between man and man, and their moral and Christian deportment. Early impressions are the roost -lasting Order, neatnew, comfort, convenience and utility, are as much a part of education, as reading, writing, arithmetic and grammar. True, it should be taught and enforced at home, but it should also be taught and ex emplified in the School-house. , Your children ouht not to be crowded into a damp, badly lighted, cold and cheerless room, without or er and convenience and as long as yon suffer this to be done, your teaching at home will be fruitless. You may build a church on every block in your city; you may supply them with able pnachcrs, but ii will avai but little if your ch Uren are denied the priviliges they ought to have. The School-house, the work-shop and the church,' should be our motto, but here in thii city it is reversed ''The Church, the Work shop, and the School-house after a while." Let our citizens awake let th ein set to work in earnest let us sec that our present fchool law U modiGcd, eo that w shall be bfni fitted by the moneys we pay, in the way of tax. s, for school purpose, and if we but do our duty, our chilJren will do thoir duty to us. In cloning, I will say tint our city should be great in her facilities for education, as the is bound to be in commerce. .- JAMES. .Arrival of the Europa v New Your. 5. A Cape Girardeau Devil. Our old friend, Mr. Patten; the venerable
- editor of the Cape Girarceau (Mo.) '.Eagle, gives the following astounding revelations of . ute aoiiigs oi ms "devil. ' e are not eur'"prised at the closing paragraph of the extract, which "says the young' devil h connection r with bis father,' whom we. presume to be old BeIxebub mmself. Friend Dawson is a staid what is written till he examines. Though . . . ,. . - sometimes correct in his replies, he frequeutly makes mistak s. But he made cur little writing table perform some möJt wonderful leatsa few nights since. 'It went-aeywh.re about our sanctum that Itmisht be directed. It traveled about with -a boy "seated' on -the top of it, end when required to careen and slide b.ra off, it did so, notwithstanding youth of considerable strength tried to hold him on. The table was told to shake hands with a certain man; it went to the place he was standing, and diagonally held up one of its legs. It was required to get into the lap of another, when it approached him and placed one leg on his kuee. Now, these are facts, which several of the best of om citizens can testily to, and who are still incredulous wi h regard to its spiritual origin. We know not .what motive power caused the table to move about as it di I. Th yout'i could not have been in collusion with any other per on, and that, to us, renders the whele thing so much -the - more, mysterious. . We present what actually did take place, and our readers may form their own conclusions. The. youth inquired the name of the spirit, and, to his utmost surprise, wrote the name of his father, who died many years ago. W4SHISGT05, Dec. 2. The Democratic festival last night was kept up till a late hour. . The principal speak ers were iUayor.Juaury' Senators Douglas, Wtlltr and Broadhead, Gen. 'fie congratulated hi menus u, on the result of the election and the harmony which pervails. He was sure every Demo crat felt proud, of their candidate, both belo e and atter the election, and it promised well for his administration, lie had friends to re ward and enemies to punish, but yet he would make removals in a spirit of jn-.tice and moderation, with -a view to the public frood. In regard to our foreign policy, he would be clad to 'see 'the decree put forth, that nc European power was either to fo-ud a colony or extend their old ones on the North Amer ican continent. There was no danger of war with England, who bad executed a mortgage on Canada, Nova Scotia, Jamaica and her provinces, in North America, that she would keep peace with th U S. Spain was about in tbesanie position as all other European nations, had enoogli tot!o at home. TUtf time had come wiieu the title ot American citizen should be a protection to hi a in the enjoyment of his rights everywhere one of whicli was the right to crry cn a careful trade with -any nation with which wo are at peace. In regard to Cuin, some thought tlut so long aslvj cbose t j regain subject to Spain she oubt to-be permitted to do so, but whenever the people of Cuba show themIves worthy of fee cd in by asserting and maintaining it ca 1 tp-iy for annexation to this Union, she cjht u be annexed. The same persons thcujht that whenever Spaiu shall be willing to aell Cuba to any other po veron earth than the'United butes, we ought to take it anyhow.
