A Hero for the Occasion; OR, HOW JIM WILLIS RAISED A PILE.
Many of our readers recollect the face - tious comedian, Jim Willis, who plnved in some rears aire. Jim Wil'is ran bo nign in lIIC Uniica i. aiO, dim t ll.l m. i, ? tin i !, PiB,i;n mon to play actors, "Hat broke, standing i n dw. tu r -.1 i l on thewharf withsolemn visage expunded. , planning how lie could -et down the river; without money, when he heard a drum and J rue. lie saw a halt-unilorm sohlier about embarking for New Orleans, bearing a Tex as banner. A thought stnick liim. Next! day he sent his trunk on board the hrst boat to start, and just as the captain tapped the bell the last time, Willis stepped on board, dragging his trunk into an unoccupied stateroom, and took from his theatrical wardrobe a soldier's coat, with a buffbreast and three rows of buttons, a chapeau with an immense plume, a red sash, and a pair of false whiskers. By the time boat had got fairly - V . . . . underway, Jim was fully equipped with his stage sword hanging gracetully by his side. Drawing on his white gloves, he hesitated a moment; but relying on his peculiar powers he opened the door into the eabin, which was tilled with passengers. In a moment all eyes were turned towards him, but he walked up to the bar and drank a glass o: brandy and water. In the meantime all was bustle anl confusion to lind out Avho the oiSccr was. A general rush was made to the register, but he had not yet put down his name the captain was consulted, but he knew nothing. At length, however, feeling a little curiosity himself, he walked up to Jim, bowed politely to him, and said: "Sir." "Sir to you," said Jim, touching his chapeau a la militiirc. "Will you do me tlie favor to register your name, so that I can proude a stateroom fur you ?" 'Oh, with pleasure," said Jim, and walking up to tl.u register, he ilouri.shcd in round text, "C. P. Edwards, Major, Texas army." The crowd passed arouivl the table thevrcad the name universal enthusiasm prevailed, r.nd three tremendous cheers for Texas and liberty. Jim look off his chapeau, acknowledged the compliment with a graceful bow and a few very patriotic remarks. It is almost needless to say that from that moment the &oi dimnt major was a lion. Every one sought his acquaintance; the ladies opened the cabin to get a peep at him; he was placed at the head of tin table, and at night was made as drunk as Bacchus on champaign. Next day he Mas promenading the hurricim deck, linked arm iu t:rm with the captain and a warm Southerner , who resided in Vicksburg. "Major," said the Southerner, "I know you have been on a mission to eollect arms, ammunition and recuits; but on this subject you must of course be muni, in consequence of the treaty between Mexico and the United States. For my part I could see every d d copper colored rascal hung like dogs on the trees. The trio adjourned to the clerk's office, where a stiring appeal for aid to Texas Mas written. The Southern gentlerdan carried it around among the passengers, and collected 15v, which Mas handed over to Willis. At night a grand supper M as given, at which speeches M ere made and toasts M ere drank. The cabin M as decorated with the star-spangled banner, entwined with the ila" of the lone star, manufactured by the ladies out of some of their red and M hite "oh-no-we-never-mentions," for the occasion. At 12 o'clock the company commenced singing songs, and at length the Major M as called upon to favor the company with one. He complied by singing his favorite song of Billy BarloM". "Bravo," said one. "Excellent, " said another. "Capital," said a third. "1 could do it a d d sight better," said Jim, who Mas fast verging into the fourth siage of intoxication, "if i had the proper tongs on." After giving three faint huzzas for Texas the party broke up. Next morning the clerk went into Willis state-rocm to call him to breakfast. Imagine his surprise when ho discovered tltat the Misjir had turned in sill standing, with boots, chapeau and sword on, his feet snugly laid on the pillow. He was a Texas major, and of course no faul; was found. Thus things ran 0:1 and Willis readied New Orleans in triumph. There hedoded his uniform, and returned to Vicksburg, where he gut an engagement in the t'ieatre. lie became a grea: favorite; and when he M as at the zenith of his glory, the old gentleman that he met on the boat went to ' the theatre. Between ihe pieces Willis sung"Billy Barlow," the old fellow was boMildered the afierpie ce came on, and Willis appeared in the identical suit in which he had enacted the Texas Major.
