After appointing a committee in Congress to cxaminj through books and documents, to sec how much money General Scott had received from Government during forty years of distinguished services, and starting out a parade of figures, and attempting to make capital against the old veteran in a most disgraceful manner, the Democrats have suddenly cooled down ou that subject, and don't say a word. , They very quickly saw that the p.'jjJt! would not stand any such dirty work, und that it only brought down public indignation ou the heads ol those Locofocos th:mselves, instead of upon Gen. Scott. The people saw the perfect folly of attempting to measure Scott's services fur Lis country by dollars and cent, and though he had received twenty times the amount he has for these services, the country would still be deeper in his debt than all the money in its treasury could repay But f ven to regard it in a pecu niary light alone, how illy and niggardly has Gen. Scott been repaid, in comparison 10 what such services would have received in any other country. Why the late Duke of Wellington is a notable example. He did no more perhaps for the glory of Great Britain than Winlield Scott has donefor this Republic. Yet look at the reward Wellington was receiving in bis o'd a'ere for puit services! As CommanJer-in-chlef he was drawing rijhly dllotrs ad :y, or about :$ JJ.'JJJ annually, and as Colonel of the Grenadier Guirds, he was entitled to about $G10J a year more. In addition, ho received a pension of 20,0ü0 annually, and was in possession of property given him by the lritih nation, to the amount of about 3,500,000! And this is not calculating or including in any degree the pay he hid received during his long services. Yet in this country, and shame be it said, the Locofoco leaders have been counting up every dollar received by Gen. Seott since he entered the army forty years ago, and parading the tiffi-re-rate amount, less than S30ü,C00, in a base attempt to injure him among his country men. But th ey have not dared say ho did ii;it nnm all thl'j. nor that he was not iustlv ------ f v j entitled to it as regular pay. Shame upon . these m:n,and thame upon every American citizen who supports such disgraceful pro cecdlngi. If the honest of i -v.'A --arlic do not at the polls, rtbu'.e these ;r.e:i for such lets, and for others even more dishonorable and contempt ible, towards the old hero, they deierveall the evils which an administration in the hands of S'-ich men cs these slanderers ands poils-hunt .. . . i . i eta lu-y email upon mem. OTlic question is would not the man who allowed a Lrother officer to slap his face w ithout resenting th.3 insult, end ho with a sword at Lis side and tho American uniform t on Iii 3- bid:, if placed in the Presidential chair, permit a foreign nation to slap the face of this RoLubli with the samo impunity, and bear it with the same ueekuess! There is another question viil Americans permit tue experiment to be tried, by elevating Pierce to the Presidency! tC-The Telegraph wires were down yes terday between Vincenncs and Louisville,
