IIopkifiaof Henderson, Ky., last Fri day evening made one of the best political epcccLca delivered in Evaasville this season. lt.was d speech upon the fr incites which di vide the two great parties, with but little al lusiou to tho men. We wish every Democrat jn Lvansriile. could have heard it, that he might have compared the high tone and dignified argument of a genuine Whig speech, with such contemptible displays of disgusting personalities as are made by the generality f their speakers the Pcttita and Laws and "Lanes of the" party. Gn. Hopkins was born within ten miles of the spot upon which Kvansville.now stands, and when the nearest house to Henderson, was old Wsgnon's ten miles back of this site! The General is a pretty old titan, but he says he expects to do a great deal of good Whig fighting yet. He certainly understands the interests of the West, and by the election of which man before the people, those interests will be prospered. He is a Whig, as he says, but he is a Whig for reasons which he is always ready to give. . He did give, those reasons at the Club UaJIand if they did not satisfy every man, no raaUcr what be is party, that Whigs have gooilgrounds for the "faith which is in them, then, had not wit enough to comprehend plain facts and arguments. Gen. Hopkins , has promised to visit us again before the election. If he do, wc promise him a crowded house cn the strength of his late fcpeech here. Orange County-. The returns from Orange co. are as follow for principal offices: Governor Wright, 977; .Mcuarty, 583. Congress English, 956; Ferguson, 615. Stackhorn, dem,, elected Representative. , - Telrgrupk facilities. Ah ! Telegraph facilities where arc
. they ! Of all modern humhnss, at least of all , good thing, in themselves, but wade humbug '' ly grow mismanagement the Telegraph . crtinlj ranks first. There U npt ancditor j ,n lhc country who ha ever had any tiling" to do with them, we venture to say, but hai fifty ' t . times cursed the invention in his own heart and pocket, to where a sound blessing once found it way into Iiis comprehension.. .Even if it fortunately happen, as it but rarely docs, however, that a Telegraph line is conducted and regulated with energy and skill by its head, three chances to one but there is some ignorant, or unprincipled, or laty.or loo smart operator on it somewhere, who makes the whole line an infliction upon the community of little benefit to any, and too often an injury I to many. The complaints in newnpapers of delinquencies and negligencies and improprieties, are as common as those of mail failures, or as of any other common nuieancc w hich laws seem unable to abate, although public opinion may condemn. Uut to come at home what a pretty specimen of public accommodation,of private conveuience, and of general usefulness, is the Kvansville and Vinccnucs or Louisville Telto this community, and an accommodation not to be too highly opprcciated or paid for, , ... . f4 ... . ujr werjr uumiic uiau in u. uui wnai are facts Hmv iIiipä it stork rill Whv 1,1 e ,acw' lluw UUC3 " siocK sen.' v ny, candidly speaking, it brings a Letter price than it is actually worth under the circumstances. The stockholders have Ion" been sick'of their speculation. They have been dispirited and worried ly the evident mismanagement of thing. 15 ut we did not mean to allude to that part of the subject. Yet what an admirable line is this! Who ever sent a dispatch over it, (knowing the line) wit'i confidence of its reaching' its desti nation in any reasonable steamboat timet We admit that even uonders in the way of telegraphing, have been performed on this line but a thing becomes a vondcr on this line, which ia but a very ordinary every day circumstance on any other. But to continue who ever walks to the Telegraph Office with more than half a thought that the wires are up! Not any one certainly, who knows the ways and habits of the thing. The fact is, the line is unreliable and any business communication which bears that character, has no right to claim connection with busincss matters, or patronage from a business community. Now, let any one ride along the Princeton road, where he can see the roV.cn posts sup porting the wires of this line, and he will not be surprised that any heavy rain, or sleet, or hard vinJ,knocks down the wires. The whole line wants overhauling and repairing, and this id the season for doing it, so as to be prepared for the ronjih weather of winter. But this is not the only reason there is so much complaint about this line. There is a want of accommodation, or laziness, or something worse, about the management, or cer tain of the operators, which needs correcting. We have been generally blessed with the r!ght kind of oprators here skillful in their business and accommodating but so it is not, wc think, at all other places on the line. At least, there is but very little disposition what soever shown in any place on the line, but at the office here, to accommodate this com munity. He have been laboring for nearly three years to get dispatches even in an intju 'ar manner rather than not have them at all, for our paper but in vain. We have oiXered high prices, and made appeals through mflu enlial source, for the accommodation, not of this paper, so much as of the community but in vain. We hav occasionally got dis patches for a few days at a time and that's all. Several times we thought permanent arrangements had been completed, but they were never carried out. Even at this time, when the whole population nearly, are look ing for election returns, we have not been able to obtain an item scarcely by telegraph; and not giving telegraph news renders us liable to the charge of want of energy or liberality, or of rank negligence. We arj not going to suffer patiently under any such charge and what's more, we have ceased making further efforts for the present to get dispatches on this line but we are just as determined toocca ionally give our reasons why we have ceased making the application. Wc may soon have the pleasure of introducing to our readers by name, one 01 two persons connected with the line. CCr3Ir. Alex C. Donald was elected Rep resentative in Gibson county, to the Legislature. Mr. Donald formerly lived in this city, but has been farming in Gibson some time. He is a good speaker and a good Whig, and will no doubt make an industrious and ener getic Representative. He is nephew of our old friend Mr. John Douglass of this vicinity. tE$A gentleman who saw Gen. Scott at Madison, says he saw him conversing with a German, a Frenchman, and an English man, all at the same time, and the old General was entertaining all, each, in his own native tongue. We have understood Gen. Scott was one of the best scholars, historians and linguists of the times. Or- In Pike, Wrights majority is reported at 315; Miller's 231; Jaquess (Whig), majority 100. 1
To Work. We ar; ever day aaked by friends from tliC country about Scott's prospect. We tell you, friends, Gen. Taylor never had better pros-
pects of being elected Üian has Gen. Scott at Jthia day. There is no mistake about it or, if by any possibility there can be a mistake about ft, we'arc honest in telling you our conviction now. But as we have before eaid, it wil. not do to rely upon what may even seem a certainty, without putting our hantLi and heads to hard labor. Napoleon was a firm ' believer in Destiny, but he so prepared him self for every emergency and possible mis chance of the future, that he left nothing for destiny to accomplish. So now we maybe l'iee Gen. Scott is destined to be our 'next President, but do not let us leave the matter to destiny, but work out the destiny ourselves. Our friends all over the Union are at work and they send us cheering intelligence. Let us respond to it in a hearty manner. I Spencer County. We are indebted to Mr. W. W. Cotton for j returns from Spencer county. The county went Democratic for State officers. DeBru lcr, Cotton und J. II. Brown, Whigs, were elected. The following arc the principal votes : Governor Wright, G19; McCarty, Itll; A. L. Uubinson, 21. Congress licavis son, 735. Clerk Cotton, 10G1; Howell, 403. Treasurcr-Deüruler, C92; Doom, 405; Jone?, 140; Rudd, 145. Sheriff Gardner, 25(J; T. II. Brown, 793; J. S. Brown, bö; Clark, 131. Recorder Gr.iy, 432 ; Langdon, 40 ; Fairfield, 193. Tin vote oiia new county, was 670 for, and 725 against. C7-Ve were not aMs to ;et the fi-nres to correct Mir election table to-day; and owiii" to the courtesy! of the operator at the Tele graph office, we were not furuished with uny reports irom a distance. Tunes. Mr. Emhart, tho Telegraph operator at this point, is as gentlemanly an operator as ever was in that office, and very accommodating. Mr. Brewer has exhibited, not only in the above paragraph, but in a recent operation of his in connection with the Telegraph office, a rudeness inconsistent utterly with our idea of a gentleman. The assurance of his going into the office and demanding report-?, as though ho were in some measure en titled to them, was only equaled by the rudeness of; the insulting letter he afterwards wrote to Mr. Emhart. Fir. Wcjtsr anil Iho Prcildcncf. TieBoifoi Courier, a journal which enjoys the benefit of Mr. Webster's confidence, ha4 the following semi official statement of his intentions in thependiug canvass: "And we tmy add, further, that Mr. Web ster does not allow himself to be ignorant of anything requisite to a perfect knowledge of ma position; neiiner, as wc are confident, will he permit himself to take anv eten in relation to that position, inconsistent with his duty to the country or his respect for himself. vur uenei is mat no win not interlere with the business of the election for fresidunt. but leave the whole matter where it ought to be lelt, in the hands of the people." On the other hand, a rumor is floating about to the effect that the Secretary hasat last iimut- up iiib minu to come out lor the Whi nomination for the Presidency though it is one not fit to be made and will presently ispuo u iii.iiii if sio io mac ciiect. Whichever of these be true, the whole affair is of much more importance to Mr. Webster himself, than to the Whig cause, or the country at large. Neither the salvation of & great national party, nor the salvation of the republic depends upon any sinyle individual, no matter how larjro the place hitherto a. figned to him by cotemporary admiration. We can elect Gen. Scott without the aid of trie öecretary; a wise and energetic Whi Government, and a wholesome Whig policy can be organized and carried out though he should keep forever aloof. If he supports Scott the Whig will be under no obligations and owe him no gratitude; or if heßhould continue to oppose him, as he has hitherto done, they may deeply regret it for his sake but not for the suke of the cause. That will, triumph never was a future result more certain whatevcr he may do. Thus, in any event, it is his own interest, and his own reputation which are mainly at stake. Ycw York Tribune. D3"In Marshall county,Tennessee,at the conclusion of a Whig speech by Colonel Henry, a gentleman left the crowd, and addressed him thus; Sir, I am a Democrat: I have always act d wit.i tint party. So have the men you sec here with me; but from henceforth wo go for Winfield Scott. We want you to go to Cornersville and make a speech to-night for there are . ten or fifteen more just like us there." Ii is needless to say mat lie went. J to General 8cott, from one who know him well. "The manner in which 'tbi nanncf in which this gallant officer has acquitted hime!f within the last year upon our uanaua ironuer, and lately among l)e Cherokeesr has excited universal admiration and gratitude of the whole nation. Owing with Great Britain. And by his masterly s kill and energy among the Cherokee, united to his noble generosity and hnmanity, ho has not only effected what every body supposed cm Id not be done without the most heart rendu-g scenes of butchery and bloodshed, that he has effected it by obtaining the esteem and confidence of the poor Chcrokees themselves. They look upju him as a benefactor and friend, and one who has saved th m from entire destruction. "All tho Cherokccs were collected for emigration without bloodshed of violence; and all would have been on their way t the West, before the middle of July, had not humanity induced General Scott to atop the movement until the firstof September. Three thousand had beert sent offin the month of June by the superintendent, before the Gencr.il took u:on himself Vie resitonsibilitii if Ljuini Vis cigratiort, from feelings that must do everlasting honor to his heart. "In the early part of January last, the Presi dent asked Congress for enlarged powers to enable him to maintain our neutral obli gations England; that is, to tranfjuilhe the Canadian frontiers. Before the bill pas sed Congress, General Scott had finished. Um work, and had effected all its objects. ; These, too, he effected by flying from one end of the frontier to the other, in the dead winter, and during the severest and coldest period of it. "Hcreturns to Washington, and jj mimediately'ordered to the Cherokee nutioii to take charge of the very difficult and hazardous task to his own fame of removing; those savages from their native land. j "Some of his best friends regretted, most sincerely, that he had been ordered on this service; knowing the disposition of the world to cavil and complain without cause, tliey had great apprehensions that he would lose a por tion of the popularity which he acquired by his distinguished success on the Canada fron tier. .But behold the manner in which this last work has been performed! There is so much of noble generosity of character about Scott, independent of his skill and bravery as a soldier, that his life has really been one of romantic beauty and interest. You recollect his conduct on his way to take command of the army engaged in LheulackHawk war. The corps he had with him were all stricken down with the cholera before he joined, General Atkinson. What was his conduct! Did he leave them to their fate and fly t the army of the gallant and accomplished Atkinson, his warm personal friend, in order to snatch from him the laurels for which he had toiled so long, and which he was, just then, on tho point ot winning! No;heclungto his tick soldiers, dying all around him with the dreadful pesti lence, and exerted himself, d-iy and night, to save them from the grave to the eminent hazard of hts life. He could have taken command of the ar my it was his riht. But behold his ma? nauimity! In this scene of Genf Scott's life ho shines more brilliantly than in the moft glorious battles he ever lougltt, not excosting his 'elegant battle of Chippewa,' as a ias been called, where two pcrtectly d:sch lined armies met upon a plain in the open day, on the 5th of July, 1814, and under a bright summer's sun, took a fair field fight, aided by all the discipline and skill thaWhe Kcienco of war could give. Scott whipped the enemy off the field fairly, although his army was inferior in numbers. Nor will I except the bloody battle of Niagara, in which he had three horses killed under him, and where he was most dreadfully wounded himself, after having made several charges upon the rncmy, which, for courage and desparation, the British officers themselves acknowledged never was surpassed."
