: 'Another Hunibttg Exploded. AU over the State wherts Öor. Wright has nJiIressed the people, and hern in Evansville, he has be-puficd himself greatly because of Lis savin?, as he says, 840,000, by his prompt nction in relation to the swamp lands. Now, the fullowin j corse?pondcnce will showhow rauch reason there is fcr all this selfpraise: IsDUXAroLis, Spt. 10, 13S2. J. II. Braeley, Esq., Undrrstinding that, in your eecli at Greenfield u few days ago, you referred to the
part taken by uov. v right in reunion ui wie watnp lands" granted the State by Congress. I would be obliged to you for a statement of what you know about the matter. Yours, &.c, JNO.D. DEFREES. Isdiakapolis, Sept 10, 1S52. John D. Pefkees, Esq., Sir: The whole truth about this swamp land matter is very simple, and while wcyicld to Gov Vri?htall praiie f-r what he did do about it, it is entirely unnecessary, as it would , be certainly untrue to awurd him t!ie creiüt ! f that acrjuL-ition to cur Stute. Gov. Wright had nothing to do with obtaining the swamp lands for our State Cmyrcss made us the donation, and some of our members of Congress ure the men to praise for it, not Gov. Wright. Havit'g lived, as you know, with yournclf, in the great swamp land district in the North for'many year, my attention was called to this law. It immediately interested our old northern project of a Canal dotcn the Kan.ahe" ' Sometime arter the law waä passed having seen no action under it, I took the ccpy from the State Library into the Governor's room and called h's attention to it-. He read it over, said he had casually nee n something of the kind in the papers, as betöre Congress, but had paid no particular attention to it. lie sked me to sit down at his table and note what action I thought nrceary lor him to take. I did so, and in doing it found that by one manner of construction, rather than another, (both of which I described to him,) our State could greatly increase the amount Of acres uuder the grant. I remarked to Lim that I. intended going to Washington City on private business, and if he would pay my expenses I would attend to the mutter lor the Ötate there, and obtain as favorabl a coii1 struction of the law as possible and an early trder from the Government as to, and for the selection of the lauds. Nothing was done about this further for sometime. When the Convention met, Gov. Wright.invitcd a number of Northern members arid myself to meet him and consult as to his action. The result of the deliberation wa?t thatthse members requested Lim to authorize ine to go on to Washington. lie did ho, and I went, and in conjunction there with It. W. Thompson, E.q., obtained the official order for the selection under which the swamp Luids were located. The Department then Is'j decided whit indeed is the plain meaning of this act of Congriss: That money received for all such lands sold by the United States after the act of Congress passed, belonging of course to our State, anil, would be paid to us It will bo remembered that Government uales were, not stopped when the swamp act pased and as a necessary consequence. the United St'-tes Laud Ollicers sold many lands which really wvre wamp lands and belonged by the act to our State This money they said they would pay over to u? as our right, rather tuan sttasids fuse salm. It is fron this source tliat the $10,000 comef, tint the acquisition of which is made to much fuss about v Now for what I did, at Washington and afterwards with the joint committee of our Legislature, th General Assembly paid ine Slt'O which would but a little more than cover my expenses to Washington but I supposed I had by it pay enough, aijd as n citizen was bound to do my duty, and I did it. Respectfully, . JOHN II. BRADLEY. The above statement shows that the Governor really had but little to do in the matter and that little was prompted by others! Pointed axd Pkactical. A correspondent o: the Shawueetown Argus, describes a conversation he had with an old and influential farmer living near Albany, on the Mississippi river, who declared that he sliuuldvote for Scot:, although he had never cat a whig vote before. Ho could net stand it to vote against the West. He declared that at this time, the river being at a low stage, shippers of wheat were paying twenty-four cents per bushel freight from Albany to St. Louis. When the river is in ordinary hoatiug stage, bo th.-t the larger class boats can run, the freight of wheat between the same two pia ces is only ten cents per bushe. An appropriation of a few thousand dollars would remove all obstructions, and improve the navigation so as to enable the larger class boats to run the year round, all seasons, and thus reduce the freight to ten cents at all times, making a diflerence of fourteen cents on every bushel of wheat in favor of the farmer. But Pierce says such appropriations are unconstitutional ! "Now, sir," said he.'do you think that Western farmers are going to sacrifice fourteen cents on every bushel of wheat they raise, simply to elevate Mich a man as Fra nklin Pierce to the Presidency ! rayi'itr guess not." Ax AwrrL Ceacker. A toper went Into a bar-room where it was unlawful to sell liquor, and called for something to drink. "Wc don't sell liquor said the law-abiding landlord, but we will give you a glass and then if you want a cracker, wc will sell it to you for three cents." "Very well," said the customer, "hand down the decanter." The "critter" was handed dawn, and our hero took a stiff "horn"" when, turning round to depart the unsuspecting landlord handed him a dish of crackers, with the remark! ' l ou'll buy a cracker, sir!" "Well, no," said fhe customer," I guess not you sell 'em too dear; I can get lots of 'em five or six for a cent, any wncre else." 03""Sammy, my boy, what are breaches of trust! said a father to his smartest son. "What a funny question; Pa!" "Can't you answer it, Sammy!" "Yes, Pa, but i don't like to." "What a silly boy; come, out with it." "Well, - Pa, your Sunday trowsers arc breeches" of trust.' 'cos you got 'em on tick." Exit Pa, whistling.
