It might very naturally be presumed, that this , i being the day before the election, we should hare something to say about an event at least Tery important to a large number of candidates. As a politician, we have nothing to say. The candidates for county offices and Legislature, appear to be running without reaped to party, there being indeed for some offices, severafcandidates of each party. We have therefore abstained latterly from all interference in their race. They are fighting their own battles on the stump, electioneering vigorously, aad so far as we can see, conducting things fairly.' At all events, tluy cun watch and fight each other without our assistirrce. We have indeed gone farther, aa it seems U be the desire of the people that for tills time at least, politics should bo kept from our local elections. We have during the last few weeks, abstained as far as possible from such allusions SoState affairs in, connection. with the Democratic and. Whig parties, as might provoke politicians to tak e an active 70Utical part in the election of minor candidates We have principally confined our remarks to national matters and the national candidates, and we desire to be permitted to do so tiil the November election. Asforthe &fafe candidates, those particu la acandidates for which the people of every county in the State will be called Upon to vote, we hope party lines may be drawn strict ly, because the whole nation is now looking at the two parties id Indiana. The vote for Governor will tell otnr oeigbboritg States, how the two parties stand in Indiana, and af ford good ground for calculations vpon which to base the Presidential rote. But our local elections are a matter ot no general interest, yet our ou-a interest in them is deeper than in the election of theState officers. Those elect ed to certain minor offices will have much of our pecuniary interests directly in their hands and we cannot be too particu'ar in getting, the righf kind of persons, without respect to party. ' ..,, , 53" We hope every voter will to himself and in himself, canvass the merits of the two candidates for Congress. If Reauis do not after such an investigation, make a claim upon every honorable feeling ' in their breasts, for the preference, then the two men are not at all known. He is honest and capable a plain and straight forward man, without guile and without deceit. He would make an excellent Representative, and a far better one certainly than his opponent, if we may judge Miller by his course in the late State Convention. Mr. Reaviä had a wide range of acquaintance in this county, and it will be something strange if any one who does know him, totes against him. ing the Whigs with all the evil consequent upon the Internal Improvement System in this State, and taking most particularly upon themselves all tho credit of relieving the State of her burthens after the explosion of this system. Gov. Wright in his late speech

here alluded to' this very matter, and in thU;üf the Times mav have a rencra! belief on

very manner. Now he knows, and every other lDteliigcntman wLo iuw xammcu miu . . I the matter knows, that this syotem was fasten ed upon the State by both parties. One party was equally responsible with the other. Members of the Legislature were elected from both parties upon the State Internal Improvement hobby. Everybody thought the cystcm was rich in its promises of prosperity to the State, and it would soon make a garden of the wilderness, or a great commercial marl of our own State , Both parties eagerly grasped at it, and we believe at last the disastrous result was a natural consequence of the competition between members of both parties sfiowing their favor of the system. This competition led men w ho feared their zeal in favor of Improvements might be doubted, or not highly enough appreciated, to labor for au extension of tho system, and eagerly alvocatc ecry suggested improvement. And then again, others were unwilling that certain portions of the State should alone receive the benefit of the system, but wanted all to be favored. Now among those men most zealous in extending this system, writing, sperking, and voting in favor of extending the very system now so much condemned und sought to be fastened in all its bad policy, Upon the Whig parly we say among and or.e of the hottest for this system, and even ftr extending it, was JUS. A. WRIGHT, present Democratic candidate for Governor! Yet this same man, in his speeches over the State, has been charging this system with, all its evils, upon, the Whig farty, and claiming for the Democratic party the particular smartness of gcttinsr the State out of her difficulties. Gov. Wright was a member of the Legislature next succeeding th it which adopted the system. He had been known before and was elected as an earnest and warm friend of the system. Duriug this session a bill was introduced, which provided for the extension of the system over two millions of dollars! Jos. A. Wright voted for this extension yet noj) he is abusi.ig Whigs for having, as he says, founded the system! A similar bi'l to this was afterward, during the same sestiouutroduccd by Mr. Owen. Joseph A. Wright voted for it. A third bill to enlarge the system was introduced by Mr. Briggs. Joseph A. Wright also voted for it. On the 29th of December, 183C, same session, a bill supplemental to an act to provide for a General System of Internal Improvements, was introduced by Mr James. ,Thi$.:VHl, with the others, was lost yet Joseph ght voted for it this making his fourth unsuccessful effort to en large the system. But on the 16th of January following, Mr. Owen introduced a resolution as follows: Resolved, That in the opinion of this House, it is expedient to extend the system of internal improvement entered upon last year, to an amount not exceeding one million und a half This resolution was lost by a vot3 of 3D to 56 -Joseph A. Wright voting in favor of the resolution. He also voted against laying another and similar resolution on the table. This made six unsuccessful attempts on bis part to enlarge the very system he is now blaming the Whigs for once having advocated! Now we do not blame Gov. Wright for thee votes, for he was doubtless acting to the best of his knowledge but we do blame him, after having thus occupied nn extreme position in fiivor of the Internal Improvement system, and even voting six times hr its extension, at this day traveling ove" the State, and declaring everywhere that the Whig party fastened this system upon Indiana, that they alone are responsible for it and the evils which followed in its train, and arguing from this that they are unworthy of the confidence of Um people. This is unfair it is worse than merely unfair it is dishonest. It is unworthy the man and his position. We hope the Whigs will to-morrow remember these things. Vote for whomsoever you please for minor offices, but vote against the man, who Governor of Indiana, traverses the State, and in every speech traduces your party and its acts, and imputes to it acts for which it never can or should be held responsible. He has been one of the dcfainers of Henry Clay, as he has been nndis of the Whig party. He has even declared he woulJ rather fail with his political friends, than rise by the aid of Whig votes. We tlerefore call upon Whigs to return this contempt, and give him his dues I now while they have a chance. Political. The Whigs of New York city have nominated James Brown, Joseph Hoxie, Hon. R. G. Campbell, Hon. James Brooks, and Hon. J. II. H. Haws for Congress, Chas. II. Kirkland for Supreme Judge, and James Kelly for Sheriff. fXj-Last Saturday, Dr. Bray cut a tu-nour from a man's" neck,' weighing over twelre' pounds ! Let then each man of the people ' think, well before he votes. Let him ask of each candidatej is he honest, is he capable, is he the best man running for this certain office. Do this, and act by the dictates of your own ronscience, and whatever may be the result, yoi have done well. CrA note from Billy Görden Esq., clerk of tho Sam Cloon, to Mr. O'Riley, say3 that steamer is airround at Tradcwater Bar. He adds "Tell Sanders there is such scarcity of j , it , , water ab: ut here, that the farmers on shore are taking their cattle seven miles in boats to: cive them a drink." We should think water icas rather scarce about there. Bars, however, are abundant. Immigration for September. During the month of September just closed 36,691 alien passengers arrived at New York. During the same period 3,232 citizens arrived from foreign ports. The increase of immigration last month over the corresponding month in 1S51 was 3,101; and the increase of immigration tiiis year thus far, over that of the first nine months of 1831, 23,024. (TMr. Philip Decker addressed the German Scott Club last Friday night. Mr; D., we understand, makes a iound, sensible and practical speech. If he be not honest in every assert ion lie makes and in all his remarks, he shows himself different in his speeches from what he does in his business and private relations. He can be relied on in anything he says or does. CyLaborers were engaged last Saturday in digging trenches for laying gas pipes, on First street between Main and Sycamore, opposite "Commercial Row." We think the business men ofthat wholesale commercial mart ouht to yive a supper when th?y get the gas let on by the Company. They want a little more gas, any how. Harbor and River Ari-RyrniATioits. The Secretary of War has assigned the charge of the river and harbor works upon the Atlantic coast to a corps of engineers, commanded by Gen. Tarlton. The improvements on lake harbors and western rivcrs,has been assigned to a corps of topographical engineers of which Col. Abort is tho chief. CCirlf any other ticket than the one containing the names of all the candidates for office in this ccunty, be presented to voters, they will look upon it as a FRAUD. The ticket no'A' being circulated by the candi dates, is a fair one for every man, and the committee appointed by all the candidates were to have gotten tip. imOne would think a King were running for President instead of Vice President, c i the Democratic Ticket, from the way in which the British are trying to get this same ticket elected. They will, however, have a good deal of American opposition in favor of Scott. C5The steamer Dove, bound down, struck a snag at Chenault'a Reach, in the Ohio, a few days since, causing her to leak badly. She discharged her cargo at Ownesboro, and went back to Louisville for repairs. v Candidates' Speaking. The candidates for different local offices having spoken in every other township in Vanderburgh, will this afternoon, speak in Pigeon Township, at the Salt Welt. All tho candidates will doubtless be present. A great crowd will be there to hear them if the weather prove fine. H3 Voters will recollect to scratch out the name of every candidate on the ticket, except the ones he votes for. This is important, and its neglect is now and then the occasion of a vote bein:: lost. A good deal has been said lately ia the Lo cofoco paocrs about duels; but we have beard noth'mg concerning the Cilly ' duel. ' Vhile Mr. Clay was alive,' it was allegated against him that he had encourage that affair. Now that he is dead, we presume no one will deny that his only agency in it was prompted by a desire to prevent the fight. There was, however, an active participant in the Cilly duel a man whom it did not suit to be . a second, . who "could not look upon blood and carnage with composure" yet who acted as a go-between, and sought out a second for Mr. Cilly, and induced him to act as such. Who was that man! lie was one of little fame, and few remember him. Yet tho I records of the Examining Committee reveal J,is na,ne as V.nAti Pit-ret .' It has of late become familiar to us.
