The People? Gratitude. The affection of the people for Gen. Scott, is well illustrated by the tremendous crowds

which greet him at every point he touches.

Tnousanas everywnere flock about the old

soldier, to see the man whose name has been

as a household word with them since they were children to see him of whom they read in the history of their country, when

school boys, and whose name has since been intimately interwoven with that history, till

finally crowned by the conquest of Mexico, it could reach no higher military distinction.

But the hearts of all these lovers of the pat-

riot and hero, point with true instinct to one

more and final distinction, the crowning glory to make the life complete, more than

the reward of services which it is not in the

power of' this people to fitly reward. They

intend to elevate Gen. Scott to the Presidency of this Republic. Never before was there so strong a feeling for the man. 1 The protector of the whole country, he has never opposed any section of it. He has not, like Gen. Pierce, been an enemy to the West, nor a mere citizen of one State, with instincts not above its narrow policy, nor comprehension Beyond its sectional lines. He has always been a man of the Republic, and for noarly half a century has his strong arm wielded the Republic's sword against all its enemies. No wonder then, the people crowd about his footsteps, and hail him with shouts and warm-hearted welcomes in a thousand forms. No wonder, that we can confidently count upon a continuance of this gratitude, till it may be manifested at the ballot box. The people are grateful and they will prove it.

ing books. - i m Election Tickets. ' We tan out of Election Tickets yesterday morning, but will endeavor not to do so again. We may here remark, that these tickets have been got up for the use of candidates of both ? - - . 1 . . . - . A t

parues, wiwoui respect i puny, lua names of all the candidates being on each ticket.Troof sheets were submitted to one or two candidates of both parlies, before any were

worked off, and the ticket a: ranged by the poll books. We may also state that the committee appointed to get tickets printed, were appointed after wc had made out the ticket with considerable labor, and had it set tip and an advertisement of their sale in type. We say this in justice to oursclf, as we should have had no desire otherwise to disagree with the arrangement it was intended the committee should make. By this plan the affair is no greater source of profit to us, and no more ' expense to candidates than by the other, but it has enabled us to get out tickets at an earlier day. Wa have been supplying candidates of both parties, at the rate of 50 cents per single hundred, with a discount for large numberi, and will keep plenty on hand till after the polls close. We should suppose Locofoco editors ' after reading the reports of Gen. Scott's

' Indiana, thought the building of Railroads, a

J; wild and reckless idea. It has not been a great time indeed since Governor Wright de

clared the idea of constructing a single line

of Railroad in Indiana, was chimerical. Yet

in his speech here, he claimed everything

that had been done for the country, or State,

the work of Democrats!

. the Club Hall. There will be business and

speeches. . .

FnoJi Wakeicc. A letter from Warrick county, winds up as follows: 'Mr. Reavis, the Whig candidate for Congress, has acquitted himself admirably in this county. He will get more than the vote of his party. The Pierce fever is lessening every day. Old Lundy's Lane is in the ascendent his soldiers will not forsake him; they have seen him in battle, and they iL tend to battle for him in November next. Gen. Lane has been up here 'letting off his gas' in favor of Pierce, but has not wrought wonders. His attacks upon G en. Scott were so unwarrantably virulent and filthy, that many of his own party left the house in disgust." We should think they might have done so with very good grace, if his speech wero as

empty and flat as one or two of those ho delivered here.

Love or Foreiokebs. It has been charged upon Gen. Scott freqnently since the Mexican campaign that he was opposed to enlisting foreigners for the army service in Mexico, and he has not to this day, as we have seen, denied it. The following was contained in his instructions to his recruiting officers in 1847: "You are instructed not to enlist foreign

ers, for the Battallion of St. PatricK has taught us that foreigners cannot be trusted."

We copy this from the Louiville Demo

crat of yesterday. We are assured that what is given as a quotation from Gen. Scott's

instructions to his recruiting officers, is as base a forgery as ever consigned a villain to the penitentiary. We have no idea that the editor of the Democrat is charged with the forgery, but we demand of him to say where he found it. Let him at once reveal his authority in order that the execrations of an outrsgad public may fall upon the right head. Louisville Journal. The Times of this city, published that item a few days since, and tried to pass it off as original. The editor would have liked to make the people believe, he was deserving of the penalty the Louisville Journal very eorrectly says the originator of the petty falsehood deserves. We guess, however, the real author of that slander against Scott will

never be found, unless the penitentiaries of

the country be very thoroughly ransacked, OT We are glad to understand that Hon. A. Dixon has nearly recovered from his serious illness. We hope he will yet be able to do good service for Scott & Graham between this and the election. No man c.n do better work than Governor Dixon, and we hope he will do it.

rC-We are afraid the fifty-six candidates will scarcely worship on the morrow to much advantage. The election is entirely too close for the proper peace of mind. They will be visiting the country, we surmise, to give a ,;piece of their mind" to friends. 03- By telegraph dispatch it will be seen that Senator Wbitcomb,of this State, died at New York on the 4th inst. He was formerly Governor of this State, and lately Democratic Senator in Congress.

At a missionary meeting held in the M. E. church in Jeffersonville.on Sabbath eve.iing, October 3d, Maj. Gen. Wmfield Scott, Gen. P. Pierce, Hons. Win. A. Graham and W. R. King1, were made life members o thtIndiina Conference Missionary Society. The amount to consiitut ? them life members was $20. And on Monday morning Gen. Scott, previous to leaving our city, received a large and splendidly engraved certifier te from the Rev. James Hill, Pastor of the Church, with the following note appended, " Done by a few friends at the Missionary Meeting held in the M. E. Church, in Jefferson vi He, Sabbath evening, October 2d, 1&52, as a compliment for a life of patriotic services." Lou. Cour.

published an article accusing a Whig candidate for Congress of having been horsewhipped. Thereupon the candidate coolly pulled the editor's nose, as also that of the

writer of the offensive article, and at the last advices was proceeding around his district

pulling as he went. That man should be

Dvei. Fatal Result.-A duel was fought last evening on the line running between Scott and Woodford counties between Benj. Johnson, son of Henry Johnson, Esq , of Lexington, and Mr. White, son of Col. T. White, of Woodford. The parties fought with double barrelled shot guns; distance forty pace. At the first fire White fell; he was the challenging party.- Thomas Hawkiusand John Brown were the seconds. A slight misunderstanding had existed between the parties since last spring. Johnson had made a remark lately disparaging to Mr. White's character. This came to White's knowledge, who asked Johnson by letter if he had made the remark attributed to him. Johnson not only acknowledged it, but added that he believed it. These are substantially tho facts. Lou. Jo-r.

The White House is 1784 A Mr. Wanscy whoso published notes of a tour in this country in 1784 have recently been the subject ot notice in the American papers, give the following description of a breakfast at the White House. Will the breakfast in those days bear a comparison with this! Mrs. Washington herself made tea and coffee for us. On the table were two small plates of sliced tongue, dry toast bread and butter bnt no broiled fish, as it is general custom.

one of the churches in Concord, where Gen. Pierce usually attends public worship on

tion at Baltimore, commenced the moraine

service by reading a hymn from Watt's selections, and, on coming to this line "The fearful soul that tires andciat, his eye happend to' fall on the pew where the General sat. Instantly all eyes were turned in the same direction, and all the blood left by the Mexicans in the heroes body, seemed to rush to his face. After the close of the morning service, several of Gen. Pierce's political friends called upon the fyev. Mr. Scott and charged him with intentionally directing the Jittention of the congregation toward the General. He assured them that they were mis" tain, but they woldn't be satisfied.

Throughout the ensuing week, there was great commotion and discord in Concord, and, on the next Saturday, such of Pierce's friends as were members of Mr. Scott's church called a church meeting and proposed to dismiss their pastor, whereupon a vote, was taken by ballot, and resulted as follows: For retaining the Rev. Mr. Scott as pastor of the church, 47; for dismissing him, 4: blank 2. When the result of ba
