If he be a gentleman, we "pray the Lord" natur? cut us out in a different mould. We are quite willing for our amiable neighbor to callus a "base-hearted blackguard" so long as he calls Garber a gentleman. He can no more make the public believe us a blackguard, than Garber a gentleman! We should long since have ceased worrying our columns with the name of the editor of the Courier, if hc had let us alone. But whenever he descends to retail falsehoods and slanders against us, we shall be candid as we are honest in the expression of our opinion of the man and his actionseven though mortal offence be given to his toady of the Evansville Times. fj3"That exceedingly prepossessing neighbor of ours across the way, cannot bsue his remarkable aheet more than three times a week without making some allusion to Galphanism in connection with this administration, and as if Whiggery had been guilty of some monstrous iniquity under this head,! which purified Democracy could never forgive. Now we say to this same unassuming, diffident young man, as Judge. Garrett calls himself that in this matter he evidently 'don't know what he is talking about. As regards the Galphin claim, if blame can attach to any party, it is to the Democratic party. To them belongs the charge or GaJphanism, if it can be made in a disgraceful connection with any party. Probably our modest and amiable friend would like to discuss this matter? Who knows; he might venture to do it. Suppose he try! rJC3"Locofoco editors are desirous of making their readers believe Gen. Scctt is visiting the West on a political mission. This is not so. He is obeying orders. We only know his neighbors regard him as an honest man, and a warm friend of Gen. Scott's. Hedericli, L. Sauer, C. Higginbottom and G. B. Wagnon, were duly appointed a committee for the purpose of expressing the views of the assembled voters in the form of resolutions. The committee retired and returned with the following preamble and resolutions, which were unanimously approved, viz: Wiiebeas, the Electors of German Township, without distinction of parties, consider the free exercise of suffrage as one ofthe only sure and safe ingredients upon, wnich the republican may found his hopes for the perpetuity of the blessings of "free government," and whereas, at the last August clectiou, divers attempts were made to induce and persuade many of said electors to vote contrary to their own judgment and inclina tion in disregard of the statutes in such case made and provided. Therefore, be it Resoloed by said electors, that a Vigilance Committee be appointed, whose duty it shall be to watch any such attempts at the ensuing October and November elections, and if necessary to take such further lawful steps as will, in future, prevent any molestation of the kind. Rzsolvid, That G.B. Wagnon be requested to furnish a copy of the act providing for the punishment of violators of the free exercise of suffrage, and post said , copy in some conspicuous place at the poll of German Township. , Resolved, Tht the proceedings of this meeting be published in the Evansville Journal and Volksbote. The House Committee, eharged to inves tigate the alleged connection of Thomas Corwin with the Gardner claim, have had George Law, of New York, under examination for several days. A correspondent says: "Mr. Law is the gentleman who purchased the contingent interest which Mr. Corwin had aeejuired in Gardner's claim, when the latter was about to take charge of the Treasury Department in July, I860. The object of the proceeding being to enable Mr. Corwia to enter the Cabinet. He entirely divested himself of any concern in the case, and the consideration received from Law and other persons engaged with him, was for the fees which had accrued up to that time, and was not dependent upon any subsequent action of the Board or upon any other contingency." OrThe New Albany Ledger thus addresses itself to the editor of the Madison Banner: " You lately became vastly indignant because a coteiuporary charged you with having robbed the Jefferson county treasury. Now, tell us, will you, what is the difference betweeu stealing money and attempting to steal a man's character in other words with falsely charging a fellow man who never wronged you, with being a drunkard.' If there be any difference, we hope H will be pointed out to the editor of the L"dgert for the purpose of stilling his own conse'enc. We believe the latter kind of theft is as wicked as the former yet the Ledger man was guilty of it no longer ago than last week. No money or al'urement of ofHce can buy an ho.nest Democrat; for he always looks to his country's good before his personal benef.t. Lou. Cor. of the Times. Dixon is gradually recovering from his severe and well nigh fatal attack of Cholera, which at one time threatened to deprive Kentucky of another of her able and honored sons, and the nation of one of her purest patriots.
