To our observation and judgment they strike away all doubt of the election of Gen. Scott. We speak candidly and honestly, when we say, things nerer looked better for the election of a Whig President than at this day. Old politicians, who until lately have 6et down New York as doubtful, now consider her safe for Scott. Tburlow Weed declares New York safe. A letter from Washington to the editor of this paper, says about Pennsylvania We have no Joubt of her vote. It is good for Scott, sure. Now, however, things are working ' admirably. We are promised 3000 majority by observing men, and the way they take hold shows they intend to make their promise good. Meetings arc being held all over the State. The Whis are at work. There is work to be done there. Wc count on MaryHnd forS.-ott." New Jersey is ours note, or we are much mistaken, although the Whigs have something to fear from the money of influential Democrats. Delaware and Vermont are good for a Whig - majority of course. The Virginia Whigs are working as if they really expected to carry the State for Scott. We hope " they may. In North Carolina the Free Suffrage ques tion beat us in August. It can't hurt us in November. She always does about 8000 or thereabouts better for President, than for Governor, anyhow. The Whigs have re covered from their defeat, and are now con ßdent. In Louisiana, the Whigs are hard at work t and wc feci pretty confident ofthat State.

Tennessee is ail right. We have no doubt

of this State. Papers, letters, and every Whiff we see from there are full of confidence. I The Whips of Illinois are making a gallant effort. Some prominent and close observing . ... . 1 Whigs are' making calculations upon this State. The same may be said of Iowa. There is considerable enthusiasm in Iowa, andVhigs are laborin? with zeal. We have thus alluded to States to which our atteation has been more particularly dfawn within the last few days. Everything aroond us breathes an air of encouragement. We hope the Whigs of Indiana will roll up a heavy vote for Scott. We believe a strong and united effort will carry the State for him. It was once carried for Harrison, and we believe it cao now be turned over to General Scott An effort is demanded which we hope will be made. NEW YOBS. COItIti:srODECE. Mr Sah dees: My business vocation has so confined me that it has been impossible for me to comply in making regular contributions for your popular Journal. I hope I am not too late to prove of some service to you and of interest to your numerous readers. What subjects shall I comment upon! If it be politics, religion, literary or miscellaneous news, it will require more apace than you can well spare in the Daily. I then propose my subject and remarks be confined to such local and personal matters as will most interest those at home. Your prosperous city has been well represented in New York the past season. Your merchants who rank high in the commercial world have been on supplying the demands your growing city requires. Mr. Issac Keen, with his young and hand some bride have been sojourning for a few weeks in the city enjoying the delights of their honey moon, besides the amusements of the city. Mr. Keen has bought an unusually large stock of goods for the extensive house of Morgan, Keen & Preston, and will ex pose a desirable assortment, defying com'pe tition either east or west. In a word, Mr. Keen is known to be one of the best buyers that comes to this market. Your esteemed citizen, Mr. J. S. Hopkins and lady have been tarrying at the Astor.Mr. 11. returns with a complete stock. His courteous partner, Mr. Heid, will now have a chance to extend his inimitable politeness towards his various customers. Mr. Jno. Shanklin, wire and accomplished daughter, have been visiting as much for pleasure as bu -incss. His obliging assistant, Mr. Riley, will be able to accommodate the public and ladies in particular with the latest styles of fashionable goods. The new firm of Colburn & Hershberger recruited I think in Philadelphia. They are clever gentlemen and are worthy the confidence of the public. Messrs. C. & H. will find it to their advantage to depend more upon New York (or tbeir supplies. Messrs. Johnson & French will also open rich and choice variety of New goods bought here. Mr. A. J. Preston, of your city, has bought perhaps larger than any one buyer coming to this market. Mr. Preston is a thorougi merchant and a gentleman of the highest order. It is to be hoped his concerns at York, Martinsville and Hutsonville, will realize his fullest anticipations. Your, Cannelton friend, Mr. Editor, Mr. L. D. Stickney, has carried to his flourishing town a large and well selected stock, and will be able to supply tbo citizens of that town in every branch of trade. Mr. Stickney is well known to your community, in fact, the whole country success will invariably be his reward. There are many other of your citizens (who I have not the honor of knowing,) that have visited New York this season. In fact, as far as I can learn, immense sales hare been made to your city and State. Your citizens then can reiy upon being supplied well with merchandize generally. There is no particular news of interest to day. The arrivals from Europe bring nothing important. Jn my next, I" will confine myself to the local news of New York. 3Iy letters will be brief and condensed, as I well know the wish of editors upon that point. With my best wishes, I subscribe myself, WESTERNER. , JCf" The splendid Catholic Cathedral, on Fifth street, Louisville, was to have been dedicated yesterday. Great preparations had been made for conducting the ceremonies with proper splendor. This is one of the largest aid handsomest Cathedrals in the West. (r A few days since, five young girl's entered the baths on the Rhine.at Cologne. They were heard laughing and talking in the bathing room which they occupied, when suddenly the noise ceased. The mas ter of the establishment, feeling' somewhat alarmed, opened the door, and found that the floor had given way; and that the whole party had fallen torough into thec river and had been carried away by the J stream.

Pierce the credit of be ing a brave roan, was the workmanship of some brilliant Locofoco, who must have been sorely tried in body and spirit by the imputations against the gallantry of the mighty General. Knowing the success attained by certain quack medicines from the use of cer tificates, he got up this certificate to help de ceive the people as to the qualities of General Pierce, so they might swallow him in good faith. But it won't do. There is something entirely too Providential in the time of its ap pearance. It suits a certain exigency entirely too well. We have seen a number of articles giving most excellent reasons why this letter isundoultcdly a forgery. The following, howev er, from the Washington Telegraph, appears lo enter deepest into the subject, and wc invite to it the attention of our readers : In our notice of this letter yesterday, we used the expression " If authentic." We today r e fer to i t to as k " it authentic !" It may bo so. Gen. Pierce would not forward it to th Union if he doubted its authenticity ; and the editor of the Union would not publish it if he doubted its authenticity. Yet either or both of them may have been imposed upon, as we suspect they were. In th first nlace, this letter is not, in the opinion of gentlemen near us, who know Col. 3Iagruder well, like the usual products of his pen. In the second place, it assumes a knowledge of the career of Gen. Pierce, which it is believed Col. Magruder'a opportunities did not enable him to possess., In the third place, it evidences a minute knowledge on the part of the writer, of the present political aspect of the Eastern States, which it is believed Col. Map-ruder does not possess, and which the most sagacious and experienced politicians could scarcely be pre sumedto attain. In the fourth place it is written with the most consummate skiii to meet the precise exigency that now exists with reference to the McLane letter, presuming that a certain occurrence did transpire as it has been im pressed upon the mind of Cant. McLane. In the fifth place, the coincid. nre of its re ception at the moment of the publication of CapL McLane s statement is miraculously wonderful. In the sixth place, the time consumed in its passage from Capt. Mcljtne to this city is in sufficient. It is dated August 1 ttb, and it ap pears in the Union - September 19t'i, just 50 days after. It must have been received by the editor of the Union on r nday or Saturday morning, for a long and labored editorial was elaborated, after its reception, to accompany it in the columns ofthat paper. Gen. Pierce and the friends near him, must have taken time to read and consider it, decide upon its publication, and forward it to Washington from Concord. This must carry the date of its reception by him back to about the 13th, reducing the fifty days to forty-four. It is no, pro', able that Gen. Pierce received it in less than two days after the arrival of the steamer at New York. This brings it down to forty-two days. We are to suppose then, that without a stumble or a balk, in f.rtytwo days after i's date, it reached Gen. Pierce, and in right days more appeared in the Washington Union, jcst reads' to meet a chakge, without cobtradictikg it, and to bo introduced so elaborately, though fiercely and vindicatively, by the editors of the Union. Let us trace its course through forty-two days or its passage to New York. San Diego is five nundred miles below San Francis co. The only steamer that touches '.here, in each month, as we are informed, is that of the first. The only other means of sending a letter to the east is by first sending it to San Francisco; and in order to reach here in time for its present use, it must have left San Francisco on the 15th of August, the next day a aa I Baa . ajur u teas written, nve hundred miles distant, and that, too, "by the skin of its teeth." We are hence to assume either that a remarkable letter, full of adroitness and applicability to passing scenes here, was writ'en by Col. Magruder, and offered to a political adversary for his use and benefit, and conveved to General Pierce in a manner equally unprecedented, or that some talented and un scrupulous Democrat, knowing that the near approach of the election forbade the possibility of denial, has fabricated the letter, and imposed upon General Pierce and the Wash ington Union, and, through them, upon the public, by means of a base forgery! Our suspicions and the grounds upon which they are based, are here revealed. If they are uncharitable and erroneous, we shall of course regret having entertained them. Yet they are entertained in honest sincerity. The prooi tne autogriph and the postmark is in the hands of Geo. Pierce or the editor of the Union. Its exhibition will help their own cause, by silencing the suspicions, not only of their opponents, but some of their friends, oho. Fire Affles. Col. V. K. Pliar, of Warrick couuty, has sent us a couple of fine specimens of apples, grown in his orchard near Boonrille. One was a Ratnbo, weighing 1 1 pounds, circumference 12 J inches horizontally, and perpendicularly ll inches. This is a large specimen of the Rambo, which is only a medium sized apple, but an excellent fall fruit. He also sent us a Genitan, a fine specimen of winter apple. The Colonel a - " says in a letter, "you will please accept them as a small token of regard for your indefatig able zeal and industry in the good causa of the nation." We will take them as a token of friendship, Colonel, and hope you may live many years to send us annual remem brances of this nature. These apples prove, as our friend says in his letter, that with prop er culture and time, we can have the best of fruit in abundance in this region. Error. On Saturday our paper said the vote of New York would be about 5,000,000 we acknowledge a small mistake of 4 millions, which leaves the rote we intended

to give, 500,000.
