Wc do not mean thos w hich have mide illustrious his military life. , from the day he first fainted to the hour in which he got his face slapped but wc allude to the beautiful and touching incidents - which have marked his civil life, when the clash of arms, the shrill note of fife and beat of drurn, fctart'ed net the ruds echoe of his quiet new Hampshire home, and be was If ft to work at precious deeds of benevolence. Papers of Lis own party.hive made us familiar withf t!wt distinguished reckless liberality, to the little bey who was a total stranger to . hima, nxivitLj te equally well authenticate! anecdote of his emptying his pockets, oi tvcentyfiv: cents on Sundiy. into the poor box. His editorial friends and advisers have grown enthusiastic over tluse delightful exhibitions of benevolence and christian feeling. But a recent lire of Pierccby Hawthorn, now . being scattered over th,e country gives an equally beautiful incident to illustrate the pe- ' culiar character of Geu Pierce that he ain't too proud to speak to common folks. Here is tLo language; "A little white ago, after his. retura from ' Mexico, ha darted across the ttreet to cxchange a hearty gripe of the hand with a rourh countrvman upuu his cart a man who ued to live with li s father, as the ' General explained the matter to h.s companions. . Oh my Just think of it ! The mighty Gen. Pierce only a Ulfe while ago and abso lutely after his return from Mexico, actually dirtcd across. .ae street to exchange a teartj gripe of thi hand, with a rough countryman, and then turning around apoloicd to his companions for f-miliarity with hicIl rough person, by declaring "he used to live with his father." What remarkable conde scension !' IIo-jv flattered . must th3 "rou-'h countryman" have felt by theexhiL i ion.l Then imagine the picture of Gen. Pierce making a personal explanation to his companions, cf how he happened to dart a. roes the strtet to shake hands with such a looking customer ! This biography is published under the sanction of Gen. Pierce, and we suppose the truth of this anecdote cannot be disputed But seriously, what a pretty set of fellows are these' Democrats, who thus para.le I cfore the people and seek to .make u remarkabU vent of, an ordinary piece of common civility. They appcr-r t regard, it äs a wonderful thing that Gen. Pierce should, shake hands with a "rouh countryman, in a public street. Well perhaps it is. They know the make bst, anJit may be vznj remarable but they hive made cut of it one of the richest jokes of the season. We were just four hands 6hort yestcrtcrday, which accounts for rhe small quantity of reading matter i.nto-tlay'a paper. - We shall make up for deficiencies soon. , 3" Hon. Arch. Dixon, of Aenderson, was very low with cholera yesterday at that town. Then were but faint hopes of his recovery. XCr Tue Potato crop in Ireland U anything but promising. , Drfumerof flay. - A short time since, the State Journal accused Gov. Mr; S. says hundreds of certificates can be g ven to prove that ' Wright f poke thus disgracefully of the reat Clay. rNow this is cbtablished, yet Wright had the hypocrisy to shsd tears at the death of Clay, and to authorize the Sentinel to contradict the Journal's statement. .All we have got to say. is this we would not vote for a brother eveir who had spoken thus of Henry Clay especially as no man -of, ordinary .intelligence made such charges against Clay, who clii not know they were malicious, . wicked, disgraceful siaiiJers. We have always regard ed Wrigitt as a Demagogue, but we now view him as one of the defamers of Henry Clay. He who loves the 'cieWry of that, immortal man, will never vote tor Jos. A. Wright. CCrTli3 XAlbiny Ledger speaks of a young man who ; is going to vote for Prerco and King, because he regards Gen. Scott "as proud, nristocratk, having no feeling in common with the masses of the people." We should think all such foolish and ignorant young men iccvJ go for Pierce and King, He had better o to school again before ie votes at all, and itudy the History of the United States: : He will then find Gen. Scott's name conspicuous, and in no single place connecteJ with faise pride, aristocratic failings, or any other littleness of soul which nrght keep him from mingling; with the masses of the people, " We doubt whether there is another. distinguished rann in the country freer from aristocratic pride than Gen. Scott, or better calculated to mingle with the masses of the people, from the feel ins of his own heart. Tc Jlaircn'an, in shaking cf th slapping face affair, and Gen..Pierce, says u the whole affair shows that he acted discreetly, but firmly an 1 . gallantly ." Well, that depends on a man's ideas of those terms. It might have been a very discreet act in his "grinhrig'an(llfaritig'4asr:rp on the face, although men with the American unilorm cn tht ir backs are not very apt to show such discretion j-jder any similar circumstances but as to its being any particular display of "firmness" or "gallantry." kc are sorry to believe an American General shoulJ startle thrj worKl by exhibiting stich firmness and gallantry. Yet the tale can't bo doubted. , Six Ciiiltrex Bcrxed to Death. In Wardshoro, Vt., at ten o'clock on the night of the 8th inst., the house of Peter Moore took fire.
