Certainly if we had ever before had doubts of the election of Gen. Scott, they were dissipated by what we then and there heard. From every quarter came the most cheering news. I he Whigs are at work they are united. That is nough. There were- no reports of distrtctraction or difference, but a firm determination everywhere manifested to fight shoulder losaouiuer inrougn me contest, anu triumphantly elect the Whig candidate. In some places, there was but little outward excitei ment, as in various parts of our own State, . but there was a silent working reported, which promised as effectual results as though marked by the greatest enthusiasm. The Whig party has a most vigilent foe
aa enemy which can only be beatcu by the Whig, an eloquent speaker, and a man of dcstrongest united effort. No matter who may cided ability. He will certainly be elected . B
be their candidate aye, no matter if it ba ao small man as Franklin Pierce it is the same. They rally around their candidate, glorify him as something above mortality, and lander his opponent, though he be a Harri son, a Clay, a Taylor or a Scott, as something infinitely beneath. We then urge it as a happy sign in the firmament ol our prospects, that the Whigs all over the Union, appear to be profiting by the experience o" the past, so far as to know that even Gen. Pierce cannot' be beaten without a defeat of the whole Democratic party, which can only be achiev ed by hard work, untiring zeal, and general unition of feeling and action. And there tve have got them, for the Whig Party is now at work, and with a concert of action which cannot fail to secure success. Every man then to his duty, and the day is ours. TrThe Fair lately held at Lex ington, Ky., was a splendid exhibition of agricultu ral and mechanical productions. It was probably never excelled in the West. We have no douot in the world of that. The who'e country would, no doubt, be on fire with en tlusiastic and heart-felt j y, the day he left the chair. Every week bring u news of some horrible outrage committeed by the Indians upon the unprotected frontier settlements, and unless we would sec the finest and most frtile portion of the State abandoned, some measures must be taken for its defence. A very large emigration from the States is expected through here this fall and winter, and from the fact that most abundant crops have been raised, I think it by far the most favorable year to emigrate that has ever been. Corn will be plenty at from 30 to 50 cents', per bushel, and no danger (as in last year) of scarcity. The cotton crop is most promising, and should wc be spared the "worm," it w ill be heavier than it has been for years. Our election for State and Connly Officers came off on the 2J inst. As far as heird from, tha contest for the offi cc of Attorney General of the State, is between John Styles Esq., of the city of Austin, and Hon. Thus. J.Jennings, of Rude county. Cin. Enq. Now, the Locofoco pres has certainly used this disgusting capital long enough. The fact is, Gen. Jackson never challenged Gen. Scott, and Gen. Scott never challenged Dc Witt Clinton, and at the time he is said to have done so, there was no clause iu the New York constitution which prevented the Governor of that State by his oath of office, to fight a duel. Upon such falsities do these Locofocos depend to injure a brave oil hero. Democratic IZonsting. The more desperate t he chances of elec ting Pierce become the more 'oud the leaders of the Domocracy boast. They now claim Pennsylvania by twenty thousand majority. Pierce, robed in the livery of his country, with his epaulettes ujon his yhoulJers and his sword at his side, recuved a slap on the face from a brother-officer, and, instead of holding that olH :er responsible f,jr t:ie insult, siunKine next uay irom tue c.ty on his way out of thd country. We commenced the present canvass determined not to apply the term coward to Gen. Pierce, and we intend to keep that determination. We must say, however, that Gen. Piece's deportment under Col. MagruJer's inllic'ioit fully explains, if any explanation is ... . .. .. needed, why he always fainted or got hck whenever any fighting was tobe done during active operations of the army iu Mexico. We think that any man, after reading a fair and full account of Pierce's connection or rather disconneblijn with the battles in Mexico, would, if u;ked his opinion as to the probable deportment of uch a person under the i'ir.mutnnccs of having his f.ice slapped, un-l.e-it.itingly say tha. he would submit quietly to th - insult. Wcd.i not liko to d.vcll upon personal matters, but we would ask in all earnestness wlu'tner a General, who submits tamely to a blow, can positively possess the qualities indispensably necessary to the stern and resjiu'e performance of the important duties of a President of the United States. The Democratic pa per have a right to complain of this exposition. 31 my of the Democratic pap shave had the shamclessness to call Gen. Scott a coward and wc presume there is scarcely a Democratic paper in tho United States that has not, tiponjthe authoritoity of tint miserable old traitor -an 1 malignant Wanderer, Gen. Wilkinson, charged the hero ofLundy's Lane with "ducking, bolbing, and do Iging," in his duels incarly life with Dr. CI mde and Dr. Upshut. Intensely Whigs as we are, wc would not vote tor a Presidential candidate l?aring meekly about with him a slapped face, though nonriMted by fifty thousand i hig National Conventions. Äou. Jour. fO The Democratic papers say that Gen. Scott "never could stand a fire in the rear." Perhaps Gen. Pierce, in the estimation of hi friends, has greatly the advantage of him iu that respect. We have no doubt that a man who quietly submitted at a card-table to a flip in th9. front would on the same occasion have submitted with equal quietness to a fire in the rear.
