A meeting of the YVbij young men of Evansville and vicinity, will be held at the Court House, this, Saturday evening, at 8 o'clock, for the purpose of organizing a Scutt and Graham Club, and to take into conMJeration such measures as the meeting mny deem expedient for the promotion of our cause generally, and the election of our State and National candidates in particular. Let they ouug men be there in their might, and let the "Ball be opened" by them with an energy and zeal becoming the importance of the contest that is approaching us. This call, though it originates with young men, is alio extended to the older portion of our Whig citizens, by whose icisi councils and sound judgment we desire to be guided on that occasion. By order. Juvenile Ambition. Quite an amusing call upon friend Garrett, to come out as a candidate for Judge of Court of Common Picas, appeared in the last No of the Times, signed by divers Democrats, sevcrd of whom are now in Eastern cities. - They think he has all the proper qualifications in a hfgh degree. (How did they find out thai in an acquaintence of only a few ; months, and when he has had no practice at cur bar J) Then again "havirg observed in your disinclination to come fonvard, uncalled and unsolicited, a thorough recognition on your part of the true republican doctrine that it is the people's privilege to designate in all cases those whom they may prefer to serve them,&c." Gas! 3Ir. Garrett has recog nized in his conduct this "republican doc trine;' just about as much as Democratic of- ' lice-seekers generally do. lie has been ma- ' nccuvcring for just such a call as he has re ceived, the last three months. "A disincli nation to come forward!" He has exhibited : certainly just such a disinclination as now . marks about a d ,zen or twenty other Loco focos in Evausville, to serve their countrv in - a first rate office. Mr. Garrett'a reply to this unexpected and truly perplexing call, will appear in the Times of this evening. With that modesty so peculiar to "him, he will doubtless speak of his own humble qualifications his disin clination to undertake the duties of so im , portant a position, and where he fears he miy forfeit the confidence of his friends but that he cannot refuse obeying the wishes of his party, &c. even though contrary to his own feelings, &ic. York Life Insu rance Company has just made its annual re . port, which exhibits a highly gratifying con dition of affairs. The Disbursements amoun ted to only 210,733 while the asset report ed from the last year, with amount of pre - m'ums, &c, made up the Fum of 676,537 During the year 1837 this Company issued 1,329 policies. This shows a flourishing and healthy condition. 3Ir..H. C. Gwathmey, is Agent for this city, and can give all informs tion and supply reports to those interested. CC3Thc dornicks flew about at a terrible rate, on the wharf, yesterday the natural re suit, we suppose, of the extremely warm weather in exciting men's pasious. Congressional Canvass We would respectfully suggest to our Whig friends of Vincennes, in view of a call made'in the columns of the Gazette, upon a staunch Whig to becomo a candidate for the nomination of the party in the First District, for Congress, that a little more modesty might be -more becoming. We don't think it looks well in a county just taking its place among the old counties froming the Firbt District of Indiana, to push forward a candidate for Congress from its own borders, before even the time has been fixed for a District Convention. The Whigs of Vanderburgh county have thus far been treated shamefully in the First District. They have dene more hard work for the success of the party than the Whigs of any other county. Mhey have worked day and night, and labor

ed with their brcthern in other counties but when it comes to selecting candidates, Van derburgh has invariably been overlooked, and men chosen from other counties, at the same time there was at least as good and as popular material in this county as in any oth er. The Whigs of Vanderburgh have borne this long enough, and other counties in the district should have some little respect :br (heir feelings, and some gratitutde for their ast labors. In this particular case, we have claims to present to the Convention, and which should at least be respected. Every thing depends upon who is the Whig candi date for Conoress in the coming election. We can win the battle with a strong yet un objectionable candidate and we will just as certainly lose it if the candidate is not all this, and this in every part of the district. After consultation and correspondence with prominent Whigs of five of the lower counties of the district, we are authorized to announce, that the Whig District Convention will fit in Petcrsburgh, on Wednesday, August 25th. Wc presume this time and place will be altogether unobjectionable to our Whte friends of Knox. The 10th of August, the time suggested in the Gazette, is entirely to soon. Press of other matter upon our columns to day excludes any reply to the leader in the Journal of this morning. We shall at the earliest moment give it our atttcntion. : Timet. Wc hope so. Do not fail cither to repub lish the letter and extracts which we requested you to copy in justke t Gen. Sott. We ere not done with this matter yet. The Germans and other foreign ers of Evansvillc shall not be deceived in this manner, while we have a pen and facts with which to open their eyes. We have too many friends among the XJermans here, and have been too often called upon to de fend them, and once frem the direct attacks of a Democratic press of Evansville, to see these attempts made to gull and deceive them, without an attempt to open their eyes to the deception. iL-Won't our friends of the Volksbote confer a favor on their German readers by publishing the extracts in yesterday's Journal, from the patriot Helnen's speech! He i a thorough Democrat, a 'German patriot, and has been a harder worker in his party than ny German Democrat in Evansville. Now we ask the Volksbote to publish these ex tracts, or the whole speech, which we will lend it for that purpose with much pleasure. Wo shall see. ttr We have no news by telegraph or "paper calculated to excite the undivided attention of our half a million readers. "We aTD just about as dull as our exchanges, and which side the compliment is on, is hard to tell. OrWc received notice yesterday of the formation of a club of forty subscribers for the Campaign Journal in the neighborhood of Terre Haute. That's right. Send them along. 3 An additional appiopriation of $13, 000 has been made for building the Louisville Custom House. This makes .$ 11 8,000 which have been appropiated for this purpose, 816000 of which were expended for a lot. 07The crops in Lousiana, Tfxas, Ark an sas, and 3Iississippi are reported t be every promising. In Alabama the prospect is not so good. Altogether, Southern planters, it is said, never had more Teason to congratulate themselves upon the prospect of a general anti abundant yield. ijnuisville Timm. We may add, that from all accounts, there will be tremendous crops in Indiana &. Uli nois. Our farmers have already harvested very good crops of wheat in fine order. All other crops look equally promising. fj7The signs are encouraging all around . a a I 1 I us. A prominent and exceedingly weil-in formed politician of Indiana called upon us yesterday to express his full conviction thatlndiana will go for Scott. . He gave 6uch reasons for his opinion as seemed to ue perfectly satisfactory. We know that many citizens of Indiana, who have hitherto been always Democratic, are now supporting Scott, and we do not believe there are any ! changes at all the other way, or that any Whigdecl'nes a full participation .in the con j flictl . That Hat Again. In a 'Life of Gen. Pierce" just published,

we find the following: "Shortly after, the train was again attack ed toy guerillas at the National Bridge, which was barricaded with chapparel. The troops were fired upon, and two bullets passed through Gen. Pierce's hat." That's rich. A few days back we publish ed a statement of a soldier, made to us, under Gen.' Pierce, who never knew that it was claimed in any way, that -Pierce's hat was shot but who was willing to make affidavit that Gen. Pierce knocked ofT his own hat, exclaim'ng it had been shot from his head, and that on examination the hat was found untouched by bullet! Now this is no fiction nor is it a "political lie.. It is a fad, which an upright and respectable man is will ing to Bwear to, and from his own observa tion, that Gen. Pierce Knocked off his oven hat, and tried tjmake his soldies believe it had been shot off, when no gun report was heard, and the hat did not show a single mark. Our informant had no idea that capital for Pierce had ever been made out of this matter, but it was a ' piece of juggling on Pierce's part to acquire a little fame. Now, for heaven's sake, let him have all the fame he can make out of it. Trifling as is this incident, it proves more than great events might, Ihe character of the man. it shows he wished to acquire a name to which he was never en titled to have made hair breadth escapes which never happened an ambition to fig ure at home in a light he never was seen in Mexico. It is excessively small any way it may be viewed. ; Post Office Law. An amendment to the present Po3t-office act, as relates to newspa pers, has passed the House of Repre6enta tives. The operation of the existing laws upon newspapers sent to subscribers is shown bebw, in the usual type, but the italics shows what would be the operation under the Bill as reported. Besides the bill limits the weight of newspapers to 'two ounces, (instead of three ounces, the present limit,) a maximum considerably below the weight of the newspapers in some of the larger cities, both daily and weekly. Over one ounce newspapers or periodicals uuder it pay double the rates of one ounce newspapers or periodicals. From what wo hear Kentucky trill be handsomely repreprcuented at the great cele bration at Niagara Falls, on the 27th. Quite a respectable delegation will start from this city the latter part of the week. The IVankfort Commonwealth of yesterday says: A delegation fromVrankfert, includig Capt Coins' Artillery Company, will start on Friday next, for the f; real See tt Tints Itlcet iig to be held on the battle ground of Lundy Lane, at the Falls of Niagara, on the 27th and 23th of July. They will take with them the canuon captured at'CVrro Gordo and the gallant Col. J. S. Williams, by whose valor it was won, has been invited U accompany them, and his expected to go. This trophy from Scott's victories in Mexico, goes up to be introduced to the trophies he . won beside the great Cataract thirty-eight years ago. They will speak to each other with a voice above the shout of the immenso - multitude and the sound of the mighty waters. The Meeting ht Lundy'sLane will doubtless be the largest political assemblage that has been seen in America, and it wili be the means of kindling an enthusiasm that will be felt throughout all the length and breadth of the land. ' " J We understand tri at Euch a reduction will be made by the steamboat and railroad companies to those who wish to make the excursion, that the trip from Louisville to Niagara and back will cost less than fifteen dollars. Lou. Cour ' Trouble among the Democracy. The last Legislature, through its wisdom (and no other Legislature, ever had so much), authorized the Governor to appoint a ' person, a kind of adjunct Secretary of State, to aid in superintending the publication of the Revised Code! The Governor appointed Mr. Hester, recently the Senator irom Monroe county, as that adjunct. Judge Test, the Secretary of Slate, declined the proffered assistance. 31 r. Hester had a mandamus sued out of the Circuit Court to compel the Judge to submit. The case was argued by able consel, and the Court held that Air Hester eould not serve as such adjunct ! We shall publish .the proceedings and correspondence in a few days. We don't know how the matter will'be arranged, but suppose Mr. Hester will have to content himself with being a privileged outsider.
