Priscetox, Ky., July 9.
We understand that up to 10 o'clock last night there had been 50 detu by cholera at ' Iloptinsvuie. r.ve aieu yesterday, oome 50 families have removed to the country. Coxcoro, X. IL, July 10. The conductor of the 3Iontreal train says that 1000 houses were destroyed there by fire. Nothing further. Bcklisgtox, Vt.,July9. A very destructive fire is raging at Montreal; it is reported that nearly 800 buildings have been already destroyed. The Ii :ht was visible at Rouses Point at ten niffht but the telegraph wires o'clo k last hoinrr down 1 now, we are unable to learn any further par ticulars at present. Buxlisgtojc, Vt, July 8. The Democratic convention has nominated J. S. Robinson for Governor, JefTerson P. Kidder for Lieutenant Governor. John A. Page for Treasurer, and Stephen A. Page and Lucius Peck Electors at lare. The Baltixnore platform was unanimously endorsed. Webster on tiie Nomixatio.is. On the veningof the whig Ta'ifi.iatioiutWashington a general serenading party visited the residence ef DanielW'ebster, and as the duelling Ip'hraseoes, called him out. His response .was tU follows '. You, my fel!or-citizens,with many others, have been engaged . in the performance of an arduous and protracted duty at Baltimore, in making a selection of a fit person for to be a candidate for the office of President of the United States. Cheers. It so happened that my name was used before that assembly. The convention, however,! dare say, did its best exercised its wisest and soundest discretion ; and, for my .part, I have no personal feelings in the muter. I reraiin the same in opitjiirti, in principle, and in position that I huve ever been. Great cheeri ig. Gentlemen, I will tell j'ou one-thing. You maybe assured there is net one among you who will sleep better to-night this I s.lill. Laughter and cheers. I shall rise to-mor-xjw morning with the lark; and, t'.ough b.2 is better songster than I am, yet I tall greet .the purple east as jocund, gratified, and as satisfied as he. (Renewed and prolonged ebetrring.) I tendV-rto you my thanks for this call of friendly regard. I wish yoa well. Beneath thee brilliant stars, and in the enjoyment of this be wttful evening, I take my leave of you, with hearty good wishes for your heelth and happiness. Three hearty cheers were then given for Webster, as many more for Scott and Graham, and the crowd dispersed. The Hat, the pinnacle of inans ambition, his aspirations and his hopes, and we beg to add, the he.id-qaarU.rs of his energies, has been no leas the subject of innovation, than the paraphenalu of a fashinablc lady, or the other articles pertaining to the outfit of a well-dressed gentkraan. Change, change, is the order of the day, (except in an editor's pocket) and he who does not bow in fcubmistion to the decree of fat.-, becomes the venerable representative of the past, and ha3 no sympathies in common, with his fellows. "Tjs cockdj4 have lived and died, and the brdJjea;es have pr, tted their h i.s of frail humanity; thi? sugar-lodftrs, a a fcriyi, with feather accompaniments, have run thp.r wild career, "brimful" of Woüd-'rou dar.ng, and "blocked" and "ironed" are no taking their last "nap" away off in the regions of oblivion. The segment of a stove-uioe, as it iJ sacJS- . tically called, by those who cannot sport onC I "is now the ruling fashion, aud we can conceive I of none better suited to the proportions of lordly man, and consequently regard it as the hatofhats. Gen. Scott would, no doubt, run better in , Canada than in the United State-". Columbus Statesman. History informs us that when Scott was a young.man, he - did some pretty fast running ' in Canada after the retreating British. On any soil, however, he can "run and not ' weary, walk and not faint." Dayton Gaz. One "fixed fict" is that Frank Pierce is to be our next President. Cleveland Plaindealer. Frank Pierce on horseb ick was upposel te be a fixed fact in Mexico, but that fixed fact was unfixed on several rather interests occasions. Lou. Jon. rCV Some letter writer recently stated that President Fillmore -had offered the Secretary ship of the Navy to Mc Gentry of Tennessee, . Mr. Gentry, 'in a card, denies the statement, but it needed no denial. Nobody coull sup pose that oUf worthy President would proffer office to any such Uentry. Lou. Jou. We have heard of contracts, by some our packers of several thousand hogs at of 41 cents net, to be delivered in the fall. MadisoniartyJuhj 7. SPECIAL K OTIC KS. I.ADll S FAUX.
