Good Word from Illinois.
An intelligent gentleman from Illinois was
in our office yesterday, and speaking warmly
of the enthusiasm in Illinois for Scott and
Graham. He says the nomination of that
ticket, has at least tnade Illinois debateable
ground, ani he would not be astonished if
Scott carried the State. He says there is a
much "better feeling for him than there was for Taylor, while Pierce has fewer friends than had Cass. The'Democrats there have hard work to swallow the nomination ofPier ce,
and many of them utterly refuse to do it. In
our informant's own neighborhood, he says there are twenty or thirty prominent Democr', who have always been devoted to their party, and swallowed every convention nomination, now utterly refuse to go for Pierce. They give as a reason, tkat they will vote for no man who has shown himself such an enemy to Western Interests as has "Gen. Pierce. That he has opposed the West every time he had a chasce, and that now they intend as Western men to oppose him. That's the right feeling, unless they possess that Christian feeling which will permit them to turn the other cheek to 3Ir. Pierce because he has struck them a blow on the first. They have now a chance to pay him for the injury he has "done them, and they will be unjust to themselves if they do not now settle this debt. Boxt set down Illinois as all right.

But the -democracy do not present den. Pierce as a great warrior; only as a statesman devoted to principle. iWerwn Ban. Ah, thaVs the tune now, is it! And to what principle is this great statesman devoted! The "principle of opposing everything calculated to promote the interests of the West, seemed to govern Pierce's conduct while in Congress. , On every occasion he
voted against appropriations for improving the rivers and harbors of the West, even when the bills met with Gen. Jackson's approval. He even voted against the Cumberland Road in which Indiana had so great an
interest, and which almost every Democratic'
Congressmen ef Ohio and Indiana warmly -supported. .This is the principle to which this terrible statesman was devoted while in Congress opposing the West at every crook and turn. He even made a speech against the relief of Gen. Harrison's aged widow, a shameful and disgusting "devotion to principle" on his part The West, and particularly Indiana does not want such a man as Pierce to be elevated to the Presidency, Eva5s or Evaxsvilie. Te3ierday morning, Dr. Evaus, of the late firm of Smith -tt Evans, gave a Lunch to his friends at his new Äestaurat on First street, in Mr. Linck's new building. He is just preparing to open an extensive Restaura t at this location, and to give his friends some inkling of what is to come, he set a magnificent Lunch for their especial benefit. The long table glitten d
with new ware, eihibitng as elegant array of
luxuries as could possibly be got up in Evansville by a caterer who knowa all about his business. 1 It is .useless to particularize the eatables or drinkables. The House was duly christened The Evans' Restaurat," we beJieve, and will certainly pfove unexceptionable to-those'food of visiting such establishments.
IlAsrsoaiE Pkesest. The Mayor of Baltimore has been presented with a quilt by a lady of that city over sewnty years of aje The quilt is entirely her own handiwork, an contains in the centre a beautifully finished American agle, surrounded by stars representing the thirty-one States, the initials of the Presidents of the United States, aud the names of the List four Mayors ol Ualtimorc. The four corners are bordered with ex juisltely proportioned flowers, which, together witu the devices described above, are worked in variegated silk. The acc" omplishnient of this tasteful, piece of work by such a venerable dame presents an example which should excite the emulation of misses forming the rising generation. iV". U. Pic . Our good old m ther, now oearJy seventy years of age, lately presented us a couple quilts of most exquisite workmanship, and one of them entirely of her own cinbroiJery, and made within the last year. If any young lady in this city can do a neater piece of work, or has the spirit to undertake so great a task, probably we have not the pleasure of her acquaintance, ff we have, we shall be much pleased to recommend her to anybody wanting a nice little wife. This same old lady, not a very great time back, made a silk quilt
containing about fix thousand octagon shaped pieces of silk, and if we are not mistaken, each piece having a flower w orked upon it. Bui that small kin J of work she never allowed to interfere with her household duties, or tak

which she was abundantly able to employ.

fJCr"A certain Democratic editor up above Lou'sville, is exceedingly sensiMve about some things wherein men generally are callous, and not at all sensitive in others in which men of fine moral feelings are extremely delicate. -When -struck where no other individual would icel tha blow, he quivers in his agony, and fatal consequences are threatened but when hit where a sensitive mm would and should feel doubly injured, he does not seem to feci it. In this he reminds u6 of the darky who tumbled from a threestory building and lit on a pavement head foremost. He jumped up and rubbing his wool furiously, exclaimed: Bless de Lord it wan't de nigger's shin. If it had been, it broke nigger's heart, sure." That editor's bra!ns evidently lie in his shins or some other place different from other men's. A knock over the pate don't trouble

and he is a gone sucker.

try- A tremendous ' Scott meetiRg was held at Madison last week. To show the honesty of the 31-idisonian, it said the next nurn ng, that the vhol? affair was a dead failure, nobody present, etc. The Courier the principal Democratic piper in Madison, the same -morning acknowledged ths meeting was a very Urge one. The Madisonian is sho'vnupin it3 own peculiar political small ness by this. Better be candid, and even publish the speeches of your opponents as we have done.
