welcome. 1 he dinner tendered to him m llie'convenlion delegates took place at the City Hotel. It was a sumptuous feast, and was attended by all the distinguished men of the State. The best leeliug prevailed, and the various toasts were received villi euihu6iasm. Ex-Governor Spriirg presided, Mr. Web
ster to the right and Chancellor Johnson and others to the left, besides Gov. Lowe, and Ex-
Uov. l'rait, u. fc. Senator from this SUte. The following regular toast culled forth great applause: "Daniel Webster Maryland shows her attachment to the Union by .honoring its uble dt fender." Mr. Webster rose and said, he appreciated from his heart the honor which hau been conferred upon him by the representatives of ihe people. In the course of his remarks, he spoke of the udopiion of the compromise measures, and said he looked upon them as ihe great saving point a great check upon agitation. Who would dissolve this glorious Union? We have at the North some excitement on the great agitating queslif ns ol the day. We have seen also at the South something ofthe same kind, and secession irom the Union was threatened by some as a remedy for their imaginary evils. What will i hey secede Irom? Where will they secede to? He thought tln se who talked ol secession had a great fr.nlty, aud that their minds were greatly dissevered; ia the language of holy writ, "They know not what they do." Much applause. J While we maintain inviolate the adjustment measures of Congress; while we hold no party with those who seek to break down the bulwark with which they are surrounded, and while we faithfully carry out the principles of those measures, there is uo fear of the Union.
