The great desire of the Proprietor was then, and has been ever since, to divert the current ot trade that was flowing into the Atlantic cities from the Western and South-western States, and compel it to lerminaie in Cincinnati. There was a period -hen New York stood in a position more advantageous than this city as a depot for the manufactured goods both of Europe and this country; but science and art have now given Cincinnati the means of attaining, if the will, as proud an elevation in Trade and Commerce as any city in the world. The Alleghany mountains have been levelled down, and distance annihilated, so that a tradesman here can send his order in the morning to his manufacturer for ewelry, who may reside, as most of the manufacturing Jewellers do, eirhrr in the State of New Jersey.
