CITY Or EVANSVILLE: TUESDAY PIOa.M.tC;, AUU VST 20.

8tmfr Kentucky Sliip Yard, &c. At promised yesterday jvc give a few particulars-relative-to- dimensions, Lcy of. the new steamer, building at this place. ' We regard the building of this boat, as the harbinger of a great and new business in our midst, and therefore give it an importance otherwise not legitimately its own. It will show that,-we can. build at least the hulls of steamers as substantially, with better materials and, probably cheaper, than at any other placie in the West. But we shall allude to this below. '

The dimensions of the hull of the steamer now being built here are 145 straight rnbit, 23 feet breadth of beam and G feet hold. She will be constructed out of the very best materials, and launched about the middle cf October. Capt. T. J. Hugo is the contractor and Mr. John Cunningham, of Louisville, builder. Mr. C. has probably built an hundred boats, among which are some of the first on (he river. The new Kentucky, will cary about 300 tons. Mr. Cunningham informs us that the facil

ities for boat building at this place, are better than at Louisville, there being plenty of the best oak within a half mile of town; piue lumber is as cheap as in Louisville; iron, spikes and oakum, arc a' little cheaper. A boat can be built here cf any dimensions, cheaper and out of better materials, he says, than at any other place with which he is acquainted. In view of these things, we think every encouragement should be lent to those who are now, in the erection of this steamer, laying the foundation for a Ship Yard at this point. That it would eventu

ally, prove profitable-to the founders, and of great advantage to ' the business and commerce of Evansville, n one doubts. While speaking of steamboat building here, we may allude to a subject in this connection. Several of our citizens have been speaking of chartering, a large ßteamer to run in the Evansville and . New Orleans trade. That in the winter season this would prove profitable, when we are in the habit every week of the whole winter season loading the largest Louisville boats, no one will doubt, m Now instead of doing this, why do not some of our moneyed men build and build right here, a steamer of the capacities desired? Certainly the interest on the amount expended would not be as much as that paid for chartering a good and large steamer. The boat can be built here in as substantial manner and fine style and at as little expense, as .at Louisville. In winter he would prove' very profitable and in Eunirfter she would hold her own, if not do a ' great deal more. A boat built purposely for , the trade, with draught, accommodations, -&C.. with especial reference to the trade would be fir better than any which could be

chartered. This would prove advantageous

to cur city, and the foreshadowing of much

greater things in the way of home steamboat

enterprise. We make the suggestion to draw

, still further attention to the matter than has

yet been bestowed upon it.

Plank llond lo New Harmony. The following communication from one of bur post respectable citizens, deserves the consideration not only o. our merchants and mechanics individually; but of our city as a corporation. It treats the subject so fully, and yet in few words, that we prefer giving it to our readcxawilhoutfurther remark at this time : Mr. Editor: In the various improvements contemplated and 'constructing for the

benctlt 01 iivansviuc, if. seems siraugc w that a Hank Road from this to New Harmony, i3 not more considered.' In my opinion, measures ought to be immediately taken to effect this work. It is known to you, I presume, that the stock for making a plank road from Albion to Graysviile is taken, to connect with a steam ferry from the latter place, to New Harmony. There is now making a

plank roed from. New Harmony to Mt. Vernon. We ought to meet this by a plank road to New Harmony. An inspection of the map will show, that the citizens of White, Edwards, Wabash, Lawrence, Richland, Clay, Wayne and Jefferson, will avail themselves of the Albion and Graysviile plank road and steam ferry to communicate with the Ohio liver; one half of the year it is the only practical route. When completed, it will be open at a.11 seasons of the year. Even the inunda

tion of the Wabash will be no hindcrance to travel. , ; '; To draw or continue the trade of the counties above mentioned in Illinois, is most important to this city it is of vital interest to every merchant and mechanic. : The expense of constructing tl is road, is nothing compared with th? tradu and business it would bring to us. The highest estimate, of the coat for constructing this work, which we have heard made,- is $40,000. It is thought by many, that it will not require lobe planked the

whole distance : the nature of the ground over

a portion of the way, being stich, that, it can be made good enough without that addition.

It is presumed that one half the amount can

be raised out of the city oi ' Evansville.

Will Evansville see drawn from her without

any effort, so important a part of her trade,

as that of Illinois for fear of being obliged to

raise 60 snail a sum as $20,000 ? .

There are other advantages, in my opinion,

this road may give us it would become an important thoroughfare for emigration, being

the shortest and most direct route from the

Ohio river to St. Louis. The -immigration

by land from the East to those going by the

way of St. Louis, to the West, is on the road to the latter place, from Louisville, by Vin-

cennea. The distance from Louisville to Si.

Louis, by the way of Vincennes, is 2G4 miles. From Evansville to New Harmony, is 25

miles. From N. II. to Belleville, 111., 130.

From Belleville to St. Louis, over amarnd-

nmized road, -13 miles in all. G3 miles

making a difference in favor of the last route

of CG miles. I have not spolccnof the profits,

which a road might realize to its stockhol

ders. I do not think that there can be any

doubt but that this would yield ten per cent

per annum. All the plank roads which we

have heard of, have been profitable to the owners. Very low that have been made,

will be more traveled than f Iii i.

We have a genend plank road law in our

statutes. Nothing prevents cur making use

ol it to bejnn this measure. Let us benn

immediately.
