WM. II. CHANDLER & CO. YOUNGLOVK Jfc SULLIVAN. 11. C. HUNTINGTON. Extra. Allow a sc es. -The Washington Union, in order to dirert attention from the round sum of $04,000, extra pay demanded and received by CaSs, above and beyond his salary, parades all the "commutations, pay and emoluments" of Gen. Taylor since he first entered the army. The wide diflVrence is that Ca charged double and treble for his services while Gen. Taylor never had one cent beyond his regular pay. Tue Old "Iveystuse." The Pittsburg Commercial Journal thus speaks of the Whig prospect in Pennsylvania. Fear not fur Pennsylvania unless the feigns of the political firmament are more deceitful than ihey hare ever proved to be before unless the opinions of the brst informed in all parts of the Stale are ill-founded, Pennsylvania is sure for Taylor and Fillmore. For our own part we have not the least doubt remaining. Ve believe honestly, sincerely, and with our w hole heart that Old Rough and Ready will carry our State by thousands of a majority. From the Cincinnati Chronicle. A CONTEMPTIBLE L0C0F0C0 FRAUD UfO:, TUE GERMANS THE TRICK EXPOSED. Some time since, the Day ton Journal charged the P. 0. at that place or Cincinnati, with en closing in the German Itrpullican, published in this city, copies of anonymous, false and blanderous four page pamphlets, abusive of the character of Gen. Taylor. Dr. Schmidt, the publisher of the Republican, wlieu Iiis atten tion was directed to the Journal's statements, immediately addressed a note to the editor oi this paper, in which he said "the entire ar title" (alluding to the infamous pamphlet in question) "was repiinted in the German Re publican of the 16th iust., with such remarks as must convince any one, ofcJbe reckless de privaty of its author. It is barely possible", that from finding this article printed (not r n closed) in the Republican, a misunderstanding might hare amen, and through it the Tost Of fice wrongfully charged." Dr. S., it seems, w as charitable enough to suppose that the Post Office had been wrong fully charged in the premises. But the Dayton Journal of Saturday, reiterates the charge, aud, to our mind, fastens the infamous fraud upon one or the other of the Post Offices mtnlioned. That paper says: T1.3 lact is, as firt stated by us. Subscri bvrslothe German Republican found enclosed in their papers, which they received at the soif oftce here, copies of the anonymous, false a a I filanderou3 four page pamphlet to which we iiave referred. One of these individuals remarked, upon reading the scurrilous Damnhlet. that if Mr. Schmidt sent such pub lications' that to his subscribers, he had bet ter haul down the Taylor flag at once! His honest heart did not at first conceive that there could be such knavery in our post offices, a proper inquiry soon satisfied him did exist. But this is not all. Not satisfied with oner using the German Republican to give circula lion to these calumnies, the trick has been re peated! . Some subscribers have received a sec ond copy of the pamphlet, enclosed as at first in their DamDhlets. " We have names to Rive whenever called on Dr. Schmidt may rely upon the fact as we have stated there wuo mistake about the mat
The mutter ought to be ferret ted out, uud the perpetrator of the foul deed punished to the utmost extent of the law. Incarceration iu a dungeon for life, would be mild punishment for such a wretch. P. Since the above was in type; Dr. Schmidt has handed us the following for iublication. It will be seen that he exonerates the postmaster at this place; Gebmam Republican Office, Sept.iW. j To the Editor of the Chronicle: Sir, the Dayton Journal, ol yesterday, puts it beyond all doubt that a most infamous fraud has been perpetrated upon the subscribers of the German Republican and upon myself, at the Dayton Post Office. 1 say at the Daylou Post Office, because from the nature of the case, as well as from its general conduct towards myself, 1 fully exonerate the Post Office of this city. If there be any luw to punish such rascality, 1 will leave no means untried, to huve it executed agaiust these faithless servants of the public. Such dishonest demagogues flatter and cajole the Germans as loug as they can decieve them into their own support, but a German whig, and above all, a German whig paper, seems to them a fair object for every species of insult and fraud. From many places where the German Republican circulates complaints arrive very frequently, that it comes irregular and often not at all. I have lost many subscribers in consequence of these dishr nest practices, w hich would not be tolerated in any country in Europe. Over and over again, have 1 satisfied myself that there can be no mistake, either in the marking or packing of the papers. Is there no remedy? Can these servants of the publicgive or withhold what publications they please? Is there no law to punish them? As regards the case of the Dayton office, the necessary legal steps bare been . taken. If there be no punishment for this gross outrage of my private rights, my countrymen artd the public generally will learn at least to what rascality and fraud locofotoism resorts, to perpetrate its worse than despotic power. Your very ob't, Chas. F. Schmidt.
