W.l. II. CHANDLER ,CO. YOUNGLOYE fi, SULLIVAN. II. C. HUNTINGTON. Fossil. FoorrKixrs. Dexter March, laboring me chanic of Greenfield, many years ago discovered on the flagging stones with which he was laying a fide walk, what appeared to be the footprints of some strange bird. Tho geoiogi-t pronounced them tobe euch, and to belorg to a jeriod before the creation of man. Thu discovery so excited the cuiiosity and f a a a scientific ardor ol .Mr. .war.-li iiint lie lias since made It his amuse ment to look for euch impressions, and lie has traversed the valley from the northern .Mass achusetu line to WetliTslicll, Con., some time spending weeks in quarrying rocks with tl.e sole view t f discovering these ancient tracks. In the last number of SUlitiian'd Journal vS Science he gives brie f account of his labors and successes, from whic i we may understand that the Connecticut valley, in bygone ages, was a favorite resort ol birds that would have made no more of putting a man in the ir crops, than turkeys do of swallowing grasshoppers. Mr. Marsh has in his possession more than eight hundred footprints of birds and quadrupeds, besides having furnished many specimens toothers, in this and other countries. In some casts these specimens are o distinct as not only to show the joints of the toes but the perfect impression of the skin. He has perfect tracks of quadrupeds so small that a hall dime will cover the whole foot, and again others ol birds where the foot measures half a yard Irom the toe to the heel, so that if the birds which made them were propurtioned like those we now have they must have stood twenty feet high! He has sometimes followed the track, cfa bird thirty or forty feet in the rock, the track being at first faint, as if on hard soil; then more distinct, as if imprinted on the cand at the water edge, and finally finking into tbe mud and disappearing in the Witcr. He has one t,hb four or five incites thick, on which the track appear a3 mere straight lines upon the surlace; but on splitting it into live lajcrs they crrow more and more distinct, tilt the lower slab shows where the foot tested, just as if whin the t ne was in a state of mud, tho bird trod down to the bottom of it, and on withdrawing the foot the mud closed up. Among these tracks are many very unlike to those made by any known animals, but still so marked as to leave no doubt that animals made them. A sort of Kangaroo, for example, shows very small fore feet and very large hind ones. Of this the Journal of Science gives a striking cut. Lxdux Ieihcise. The St Louis Reveille relates that an artist of that city, being recently cngagid in sketching the scenery about Fort duelling and the Falls of St. Anthony, was very desirous of embellishing his panorama with sketches of Indian groups, taken from life, and the sight of a Sioux encamp ment threw him into rxtaeies. He forthwith set himself down, pencil and sketth-boük in hand, and transierred upon paper the picturesque lodges, with . all the pleasing groups around them. The Indian medicine was tied in a bundle, and suspended upon a stick stuck upright in the ground, a short distance in front ol one of the lodges, and Sam, after sketch inr advanced to examine it more closely, and -" e - thoughtlessly handled it. This, in the eye of an In dian, is a grave offence, for the touch of a white man in their opinion, destroys thecflicacy of the medicine, He had scarcely touched it before an arrow whizzc; by him, in close rroxinaity to his ear, and Sam turn ed around in time to prevent the flight cf another which an Indian was fixing on the string of lib bow some thirty yards from him. A half a dozen of on gryred men were gesticulating to him he advanced towards thera and tried to explain that he meant no offence, that ha was only sketching, &c, but they talked ioux ai him so passionately, and accompan ied their words with such t-ignificent motions, that he thought it not only pru lent, but positive wisdom to leave suddenly and this he did, wiihout ''wailing cpon the'order of hu going."
