' WM. II. CHANDLER &CO. YCUNGLOVC & SULLIVAN. lJ,C.i',WTIXlJTON. JuJe Lafayette Sau:dees of Louisiana, died recent! at the Eod Sulphur Springs in Virginia. He was a delegate to the erent Whig National Convention, and read the el position of the political views ami sentimentb of Gen. Taylor, which lia.-ebeen iheauhject of so much fcubeqiu nt conmv lit. He was a man of abilities, and carried uiihhiu: the universal respect of all parlies. Em ig easts to Calikobsia. The immense quantities of gold which is said to abound in California, and the ease with which it is secured, is creating a moving fever in all parts of the United States. Even in our staid and sober little city we hear people talking the matter over, and speculating as to the easiest, bestand quickest route to this el Dorado, as if they were all ready for a move and only waiting to learn which route to take whether to go by sea or oa the outside of a mule. Perhaps the follow- . ing which we copy from the Louisville Courier may throw some light on the matter, and afford instructions by which our emigrants may prefit. The Courier says: We learn that there is every probability of a large emigration to California, uext year. We bear of the organization of companies in vari ous towns auu neighborhoods in Kentucky, for this purpose, as well as in nearly every other State in the Union. There is but little doubt that fifty thousand persons will be on their way to thearlAesr U'of, as soon as the green grass of the prairies shall show itself above the surface of the soil, next spring. We consider we are doing a service to all persons designing to emigrate to the new Eldorado, by calling their attention to Mr. Bryant'a new publication in reference to California. No emigrant bound to this country should fail to read this work before he starts, and have it by hitn on the tourney. It is a perfect guide book on the journey, and after arriviug in the country, as could be written, oesues me entertainment which its paes afford as an agreeably written narratiue. With the work in his hand, the traveller to the Pacific, can never lose his way and he will always know wnsre "grass and water can be found. Let every emigrant purchase IvAal I saw in California. The Diffebesce. When Gen. Taylor was advised by the administration to retreat from Buena Vista to Monterey, he scorned the ad vice. He bad gone to Buena Vista to fight and not to run away. He fought and conquer ed and thus prevented the hosts of Santa Anna from overrunning all the territory wres ted from the Mexicans and even Texas it se If. When Gen. Cass at the Aux Canards bridge was instructed in writing by Gen. Hull that he was at liberty either to pursue theenemy or to retreat according to his own discretion he chose totetreat. He ran away, when, by pushing forward a few miles, he might have talon Mahlen without strikinc a blow. Ihe tBVM - (J consequences of his running away was the in vasion of Michigan by the British forces. A man may as well break his sword who has no use for it on such an occasion as that. Costlt. Facts to be rem em bee ed. That Lewis Casa says that Congress has no constitutional power to prohibit the introduction of slavery iuto California and New Mexico. That LeNvis Cass, while Governot of Michi gan, claimed and received, as extra pay, 64,000, of the People's money. That Lewis Cass stands pledged to carry out the policy of the present administration, which is opposed to the improvement of our Rivers and Harbors. That Lewis Cass is in favor of a tariff for re venue only, without regard to discrimination in favor of the labor of our own country. That Lewis Cass, whilst favorable to involv ing our country in foreign wars, and to preparing the hearts of the American people for war, lakes good care to stand out of harm's way, when war does come. That Lewis Cass was playing the courtier at the Court of Louis Phillippe, while "Old Rough and Ready" was in pursuit of the savagea through the everglades of Florida. Santa Anna's liquor canteen is in possession of Mr. McBride, of Philadelphia. It is made from the horn of a Mexican ox, is about two feet liigh, and is beautifully mounted with silver. One of the most remarkable instances of the success which attends well applied energy and perseverance, is exhibited in the case of Dr. David Jatse, of Philadelphia, with whose advertisements the readers of the Register are familiar. The Doctor.after spending many years of his life in practice, and a careful investigation of the origin and character of diseases, applied himself to the preparation of remedies, and the excellence of his compounds is attested by the grateful thanks of thousands, who have proved the benefits of his skill and scientific knowledge His are not mere quack notrutns.but preparations resultingfrom longatil careful study, and as they serve, iu an eimneut degree, the good purposes for which ihey were intended, success has followtd the proprietor's enterprise and labors. His establishment is now one of the largest in the United States, and besides furnishing every city, town and township in the couutry w ith his invaluable medicines, he ships, annually, immense quantities to foreign lands. In the prosecution of his plans for bringing his specifics to the notice of the whole people, Da. Jayne has issued a Family Almanac, containing certificates and testimonials of the highest character. Wcsee it stated iu the Germantown Telegraph, that "last year, one mil lion of the Almanacs were published for 1818, and all distributed. This year, the demand for 1819 is so great, that two pow er presses, driven by steam, are running day and night, with a double set of hands, and are unable to meet the third foiser ;TCss! Tico millions and a half of copies will bfc inquired for 1819 consuming! from twelve tofiftet. tl thousand reams of paper, and incurring an expeie n the very small rate of tw o cents each t op; ad we cannot see how thoy can be furnidiou at s lw a price of fifty thosand dollars. iJ won derful, exhibiting, as it does, cuC ol most remarkable instances of enterprise PU re cord. But it must be remembered that this large sum, which is a fortune of itself, is entirely given away the whole two millions and a half of Almanacs are gratuitously given to merchants, storekeeper, families and individuals, with a view to their general gratuitous distribution throughout the United States. Th position of Dr. Jaynk ian enviable one achieved by his ow n unaided niergy, iiulustry a:i'l enlerprie drawing largely from an extensive knowledge- of in--dical jurisprudence and he now standi at the head of the tliscovrriesof nieiliciii" for "th .million," which have not only bvt-n pioniuntrd to bcuucqualled as remedies, for the diseases severally set part by the proprietor, &c, but destined to confer upon this human family incalculable benefits in the torin ot restored health, and prolonged existence." Letters are coming to us from all parts of the Union expressing gratitude and surprise at the wonderful properties it possesses in all cases of burns, rheumatism, piles, wounds, &c. The press abounds in notices of its high character as a standard Medicine, and from the number we select the following from the Island City of the 12th September : Daixev's Medical Pain Extractor. An invention like this truly wonderful article, so full of virtues . . . ... . . i . i i ' j i should be made known to the universe. Its cures, in manv cases are absolutely bevond belief. For burns. scalds, sores, swellings, f alns in the limbs of all kinds, cuts, wounds, and in cverjdiscaseof the body, where it can be applied externally, it never laus to cure. A singular case came under our own observation. A friend in playing with a si arp 6teel pen, run it into the palm of his hand so that it came out at the back nnd had to be extracted tlial wav. The poisonous natuieof the ink in the wound, ns well as the instrument itself, cauwd the Land to swell dreadfully.
